Normally if I want to port large amounts of files over from one computer to another, I use an external hard drive.

Is there an easy way to eliminate the middleman?

Put the 2 comps on a network, map the drive of comp B onto comp A. Drag and drop.
Just be sure to enable file sharing in the drive properties.

this is by far the fastest, maybe not the easiest for a non-tech savvy person. my dad has a USB cross over cable that plugs into both computers. it basically does the mapping for you. if you are in the union county area on sunday, I would be more than willing to meet up with you to give it to you. if not, i can always help out with the mapping thing

Damn, I was ready to jump in and both of my answers were already taken. And I agree that Hottub's suggestion of sharing/mapping the drive is by far the easiest method.

However, you can also pull the hard drive and use an external hookup (USB) to pull the data.
(hey, I had to add something)

Pull the hard drive out of one computer and put it in the other?

You didn't say both computers had to be usable when you were done.

I did that too, and it was pretty quick. Don't forget to un-share your files when you're done.

I have my firewalls configured to be ultra-protective, and I have a feeling they aren't going to play nice with each other. I may use the USB crossover... that seems safer...

thanks for all the advice so far. I usually use an external drive but I think the crossover sounds good

there are external enclosures that will use a 2.5" drive (laptop drive) as a USB drive... and there are also adapters to allow the use of 2.5" drive in PC's... but you have to remove it from the laptop first.

You can actually still do it. With a external hard drive case.

I pull up all my documents, copy them off the screen onto notebook paper, then re-type them into a new document on the new computer.

The pictures I draw on construction paper and then put into the new computer with Microsoft Paint. It makes the porn a little harder to jerk off to, but I'm not gonna let it stop me!
