What's the best credit card company out there? I'm looking to apply for a credit card, my income sucks, and I'm wondering where I should turn?

Until you make 40k a year, you should not get one. You will not be able to pay for all the shit you are going to buy, so do not do it to yourself. get a bank account with a Visa Check card with it.
seriously, no credit card. I am sure there are a lot of members on here who can tell you some CC horrror stories.

Fair enough. I was just wondering cause my friend has a bank card with visa, and he also recently got a mastercard from barnes and nobel which has a 200 dollar spending limit. I was intrigued.

I would get one with a very low limit.. just to buy shit, pay for it right away.. This way you can build your credit.. You can not build it, unless you start payin for shit.

once you get one, you will get offers everyday for so many more. the tempation will be waiting for you in the mailbox everyday
def a good way to learn how to use a CC is to get a bank card cause you have to have the funds to use it, which is the same reason you should use a CC.
I have a CC that I use all the time, but only for the points. I make sure I pay it off every month

Do they still have secured cards? That may be the way to go.

I applied for an American Express and I got rejected. So, I don't know where I can get one with a really good chance of NOT being rejected.

That's why I mentioned secured cards. The way it worked, was they'd hold on to a couple hundred bucks in an account. You'd pay your bill every month, and build up credit. The money they held onto was in case you didn't pay your bill (which would be bad for your credit). Eventually, you'd be able to get a normal card.

thats a good idea. Look into a bank called Orchard Savings Bank, they have secured cards.

Those kinds straddle you with fees right as you get your card.. they charge like $150 as soon as u get the card.

Yeah... the fees are bad. I'm just saying it might be the way to go if he can't get a card any other way. Then again... if you have a check card, there's no real reason to have a credit card, if you can't really pay for stuff without it.

I love my Discover card, they give me all kinds of crazy incentives. Capital One Visa was my very first credit card, good company for starting out.

The fees suck but the cards do wonders for your credit. I had some credit issues in the past and got a secure card, it really took only a few payments to start on the path back to good credit. A few months after I got my secure card I got a mastercard, I recently ran my credit report and it improved over 100 points.

If this is your first credit card you have no business needing or wanting an American Express. They are great for business's but for first time cc you need something more like a Capital One. They usually have college credit cards that have very low spending limits. CC's are very good ways to help build your credit, just as long as you pay on time. I think your smart to want one, it should teach you and help you if you do the right thing.
Side note. Do not apply for a lot of cards. Everytime your ss# is used for an application it actual hurts your credit at first b/c it shows to much request of credit. It doesnt kill it, but it will look suspicious to other crediters that your trying to get a cc from.
Like I said Capital One is very good at approving. Good luck and be smart!

It's not necessarily the best "company", but the best rates you can get at the time.
www.bankrate.com is a good place to start.

Capital One also has good options for people with so-so or "new" credit. You should only have an AMEX card if you have spectacular credit or can pay it off completely every month.
Chase and Bank of America has good options too, but remember, the national average APR is right around 13 percent. You want a fixed rate around there. If, in the future, the national average drops, and you're in good standing, you can try to re-negotiate you APR.

I love my citi m/c. I use it all the time and pay it off every month. Like Nick I use it mainly for the reward points. I've gotten alot of good stuff through it as well you can also use the points accumulated towards paying off your balance.
I recently got an Amex card which I never use. It's the basic clear/blue one with no annual fee.
I have a couple store credit cards but I'd advise against those unless you are absolutely confident you will be able to pay them off immediately. They also tend to try to lure their card holders into buying more with what may seem like great deals. Don't fall for it! You will be paying ridiculous finance charges.
How old are you? I assume you are fairly young so there is no need for you to acquire anything fancy. As Kevin said maybe just one with a low spending limit just so you can begin to build your credit history. You know yourself, if you are easily tempted be careful and don't take your CC with you unless you know you might absolutely need it. Credit cards can be the best or worst depending on whose hands they lie in.

I applied to "Stinkbomb Bank" but all I can buy with the card is spray paint to use to make the backwards swasticker, the peace sign and just the word "The Who."

When i was 19 or 20 i applied for a Capital One card and was approved. I would pay my phone bill with the card and then pay the credit card off with my bank card. After about 5 months my limit was increased. I started with a $200 limit and now i am at 1,800 or 2,000, i can't recal because i never use the thing.
I did a "rapid" apply to about 5 card companies at once(forgot what my brother called it) denied by most because of low credit but eventually it built up with time.
I just turned 22 and i have five credit cards, 3 of which carry no balance and have never been used. Two have been used and paid double their minimum fee a month.
It's hard to build your credit, really fucking hard maybe you should talk to your parents about being tagged on to their cards to jumpstart a credit line?

In addition to improving your credit a cc can give you some security when youre making a big purchase. If youre spending 2k you probably dont want to be taking that directly out of your checking account. Obviously it will cost him extra but its a worthy investment

Orchard Bank - Scam.
HSBC - Scam.
You will only get a card that gets you credit that will work for you by getting AMEX, Discover, or a Bank issued VISA. By that i mean Bank of America VISA, Washington Mutual (WAMU) and there are a few others.
Cards with limits below 1000$ are not worth it. Don't think of a $500 limit as training wheels.
You'll max it in a heartbeat. Between the wife an me we probably have 50K in credit available
and thats not to brag, its dangerous. I can't tell you how many times i am saying "C'mon we need a 56" flat panel what the fuck is wrong with you!!?" and she says "No stupid, we can't pay for it." So i am stuck with a stupid 36". Why do I say the above are SCAMS? because they are designed for you to fuck up. 1 missed / late payment and thats it, they can raise the interest to 30% with NO warning. They have low limits cause they don't want a big risk, and they make the most money because everyone qualifies, and the majority will forget to make a payment on time at some point and !BLOwIE there goes your payment.
And not all, but most are making it so if you pay online.. there is no more pay it the day its due. That tack on an additional processing fee of 15-20$ to make it go thru that day. Even tho if they wanted to hit your account with a fee the could do it in about .00005 seconds and make it happen.
Credit is dangerous, I have businesses and rental properties and everyone is willing to give me money even tho i really don't have any. And they up our limits about every three months as it is. fuckers.
when i was 18 i got credit card offers... and i was young and stupid. So i charged a 4 year coke binge on my VISA. Cash advances are a bitch. took me 4-5 years to fix that little mess. Now i am older an wiser and don't put weed on my credit card. Its a crazy little game and you shouldn't play unless you have restraint or a women that will slap the shit outta you if you are lacking restraint.

Amex Blue or straight-up AMEX?
Also, did you get your AMEX cards on pre-approved offers?

I think it's fairly easy to get an Amex student card. The thing is though, I'm not currently in school and I'm waiting to hear back from the college I applied too.

Amex blue and Amex clear. No, i don't think so?
It was my experience that the Amex "green" card was a hard CC to get and because of the APRs and need to pay off every month, it should be avoided.
Amex "Blue" is more of a traditional credit card.
But as I said, that was my experience.
I'm currently in the process of reducing my debt. I'm balance transferring and paying down balances.

I have an Amazon.com visa card and it's great--I accumulate points for every purchase and get a $25 gift certificate to use at Amazon.com about every other month. It's free money since I pay off my balance every month.

as i started college i recieved many cc offers and took most of them
i had about 5 at one time with limits from 1000 up tp 5000 all pretty much maxed out
there was no end in sight as i could only afford to pay the minimum or a lil above but not much to make a dent
luckily over the last 5 years i ve gotten rid of all the debt and i currently dont have any cc whatsoever, just my bank atm visa
theres tons of shit that id buy b/c i could with the cc, but with just your bankcard you either have the money or you dont
