What year is this? Kansas is officially the new dumbest state in the union.
http://www.thelastboss.com/post.phtml?pk=2554

"The Kansas Board of Education approved a controversial measure yesterday that will ban all Pokemon video games, trading cards, and related merchandise because of the franchise’s blatant promotion of evolution. The vote, which passed by a narrow margin after weeks of debate amongst members of the board, is being hailed as a victory by conservatives and religious groups. Teachers will now be required to search their students at the beginning of the school day to make sure that they aren’t carrying any copies of the game. Any copies that are found will be immediately and permanently confiscated, and the student may be subject to punishments ranging from a temporary suspension to outright expulsion for repeat violators.

Many Kansas churches also held events geared towards encouraging children to drop the game, ranging from several “Pokemon burnings” where copies of the games were thrown into large bonfires, to programs that provided students with a free Bible for every game they turned in to church authorities."

Good luck you fucking hayseeds.

This might be a "shut up and go away" throw away vote they are giving those religious nuts because they lost their campaign to weaken the teaching of evolution in public schools.

Conservatives lose latest Darwin battle in Kansas (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=topNews&storyid=2007-02-14T003351Z_01_N13240024_RTRUKOC_0_US-USA-EVOLUTION-KANSAS.xml)

But yes, I agree.. the fact that Kansas is dealing with such an issue in 2007 is giving it a very dumb reputation.

My crazy ass Aunt lives near Manhattan, Kansas (THE LITTLE APPLE LOL), because her husband was relocated there by the Army.

My grandmother lives in Colorado, so one time, I drove there from NY and stopped off to visit my Aunt in Kansas. Terrifying. My Uncle told me that as of 10 years ago, they had a homemade sign hanging up in the town that said "No niggers after dark". I wanted to take them out to dinner, but it was Sunday, my Aunt informed me that EVERYTHING closes on Sunday, and the closest open restaurant would be an hours drive. I don't know how she went from NY to there. She's basically become a crazy cat lady now.

Again not to de-rail, but there are some very terrifying places in the USA, places where you start to think, oh Jesus, please please car do not break down here just keep going every mile in my rearview mirror is one less bit of fear of the nightmare of stopping/getting stuck there. While I couldn't find any other stories which confirm Foghat's original post, I can't dismiss this story. I've been to Kansas many times, as one of my best friends moved there back in 2002, and I try to go see him at least once a year. It is a very rural state, and has little in the way of what anyone would consider a city; even the city that bears it's name is actually in Missouri. My friend only moved there because he works for a railroad company that is based in Kansas City, and the real estate is much cheaper in Kansas, probably because noone wants to live there. My friend's oldest child is nearing school-age, and he is seriously considering moving back to Missouri becasue of Kansas' notoriously conservative schools. If this shit is true, I can't say I blame him.

You need to add MISSOURI. On the same drive to Colorado, I stopped in the middle of Missouri at a diner. The whole place went DEAD silent when I walked in. I think it was because I was wearing lavender pants. It was 9am and they said they served breakfast to 11... but they refused to give me breakfast. There was literally like 4 or 5 pregnant teenagers there... looked like everyone came from church. They stared at us the whole time I was there, I couldn't get out fast enough.

I don't know why the posters to this thread are so hostile to the Midwest. Why should you all (or should I say Y'all?) be worried about some dumb Pokemon cards in Kansas? Won't affect any of you enlightened beings one damn bit, but since some people made a judgement call for their kids, you all act as if it were the Salem Witch Trials.
Born in New Jersey, and having spent 5 years in Kansas (Manhattan, Ogden, Topeka and Overland Park) I have to say even though the Phelp clan is out there, I prefer the lifestyle, people, attitude and COST OF LIVING to New Jersey and New York.
1. The people are freindlier
2. The work day is less hectic.
3. The enviroment is cleaner.
4. The taxes are much, MUCH lower.
5. The traffic is managed.
6. The roads are in better shape.
7. The politicians aren't thieves, connected to the MOB, or queers.
8. The neighbors mind their business.
9. The township leaves its revenuing nose out of your private property rights.
10. The speed limits are faster.

It's not hostility. Religious schools which aren't accredited (like the college in the article) usually aren't accredited because they don't meet minimum standards of education, usually because of how they treat science. Thus, teachers who are trained at colleges that don't meet minimum standards of education shouldn't be certified to teach.

Well, in all honesty, I could find plenty of articles that showed that Ashcroft is a nut, but most of them were from questionable sources. I'm really annoyed at the St. Louis Post Dispatch's website for having a very limited archive that doesn't go back to his time as either a senator or governor.

Anyway, it's well-known that he is a pentacostal (and I'm sorry, but I find it hard to deny the nuttiness of this religion) and very active in the political activities of this religion. Also, he's closely associated with the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group known for it's pro-segregationist views and members included such wonderful people as Jesse Helms ad has friendly relations with France's National Front (a hard right political party known for it's very racist views).

I suppose it is arguable as to whether or not Ashcroft is a religious nut, but I think I have proven he's a fucking asshole, if that counts for anything.

1) John Ashcroft is a nut... no way around that. He was nothing but bad for the state, why else would he lose a Senate election to a dead man.
2) I can't stand Kansas. I hardly cross state line into that state, unless I am working there.
3) Add Greater Kansas City to the stop over list, it's not backwards like the rest of Missouri (contrary to popular belief, the largest part of Kansas City is in Missouri). Springfield isn't bad... Columbia isn't bad either, but they are both large college towns.

I will say that the Kansas City Metro part of Kansas isn't too bad, but it's mostly filled with stuck up "better than everyone" types who have no idea that talking on a cell phone, eating a bowl of cereal, shaving and driving during rush hour at the same time is dangerous.

having said all of that, I have to say that I can't believe that the Kansas Dept. of Education, having just reversed the decision to include "Intelligent Design" in the definition of science on Feb. 27, 2007, would then go and do something this stupid right behind it. There are no credible news sources supporting this ban.

I'll agree with the asshole allegation. This administration has been very arrogant and secretive. I find Gonzales to be worse then Ashcroft though. But I don't even know why I tried to defend him. Once I said "name one" I felt my spidey senses tingling with danger. You posted "John Ashcroft" and I should have just signed the surrender papers then and there. Given that, I don't think the MO side of KC is any better than the KS side. They both equally suck.

our taxes are lower on the missouri side (Lee's Summit not included).

I enjoyed our debate as well. You did a pretty good job of attempting to defend Ashcroft, though I couldn't for the life of me figure out why you would want to, either. I post almost exclusively on the politics threads, so I'm sure we'll encounter each other again. Yerdaddy is easily one of the best-informed people I've ever encountered. Great cartoon, btw. Very Tom Tomorrow-ish.

Thanks. I really wanted to make it holding an AK-47, or any kind of gun for that matter, but they didn't have any. The sword works, though.

Though it's been disproven, I thought it was adorable.

May I also point out that in my childhood I was the tolitarian president of the pokemon club at my school. I took over the club with the force of Hitler and Nazi Germany, and kept people coming back with the smooth talking of Bill Clinton. The club eventually disbanded, but I will forever be remembered as Pokemon President Keithy_19.
