ok. Im going to try to make this short and sweet. I got a promotion at my Job on Friday to "supervisor". Ive been here for a year and previously i used to work at J.Crew until my boss came here and he brought me with him.
The company i work for is a growing retail company. I work in the Finance Department. This lady i work with has been here for about 7 yrs. She cannot figure anything out, doesnt know how to research previous history on various vendors/accounts. She types with "two fingers"..... both pointers!!! She cannot even use Excel. She is in tears because she just got her review and found out that I have been promoted and she now has to report to me. Her review was HORRIBLE, yet they still gave her a reasonable increase in salary. This woman is 62 yrs old. I really like her as a person, but this Office Politics crap just makes me lose it. She told a couple of people before she received her review, that if I get promoted she's going to flip out!
I work late. I work hard. I go out of my way to avoid problems from going to my director and manager. I feel that since ive been working with my director for almost five years. He knows how i am, he's confident with me. I deserve this promotion!!!!
I dont know if im looking for advice, but has anyone had the same or similar problems? I dunno, just need to get this off my chest before i end up choking a bitch. LOL

Yeah office politics blow. It sucks your coworker can't be happy for you and your success. Some people have it in their heads that if they work at a place longer it will ensure them promotions ahead of other people, and instead working hard and improving themselves, they just sit around and do enough to not get fired. There's nothing you can do about these people, they exist everywhere, especially in the government.

I am with you on hating office politics. Remember that no one will look out for you but yourself. And even more importantly to your situation ... What do these people really want? Are you supposed to appologize for your success? Were you supposed to turn the promotion down because she's been there longer? Do not worry about anything these dopes have to say about you or your situation ... if you work hard and deserve the promotion thats all that matters!!! Congrats Reilly, and try to enjoy it.

Sounds like a government employee to me.
Of course, if it was the government she would have benefited from what I like to call "Promotion Through Incompetence": if a government worker is that dumb and worthless, promote them to make them someone else's problem.
Oh and congrats on the promotion!

I dont want to approach her about it, because i pheel that i dont want it to become a personal issue. This is a business. I will have a meeting about the change, but im not wiping anyones tears away that i didnt cause. its bullshit. Then she might pheel she has that over me, that im suppose to make her pheel all warm and phuzzy inside. PHUCK THAT!

Maybe she's upset because her new supervisor doesn't use the letter F and she's dreading trying to decode your emails about the companies phinances.

Yeah, This Happened TO F_S About 20 Years Ago. He Was Promoted To A Pretty Big Job And Had An MIS Department Reporting To Him. The Woman In Charge Had Been With The Company For 35 Years And Had Managed To Get Her Postion Just By Lasting So Long. But Her Department Was A Mess, And Needed To Be Shaken Up.
Fat Goes Down To Introduce Himself And Before He Can Even Says Hello She Says: "You Know, I'm Over 60, And You Can't Fire Me Because I'll Sue You For Age Discrimination, So Let's Understand That From The Get-Go."
Wow. What A Jerk.
Anyway, The Politics Never Ended At That Place, Not Just With Her, But With Everybody, So Eventually Fat Said Screw All Of You And Started His Own Business.
old lady: "I don't give a fuck about reillyluck, i don't even know who that fucking cunt is.
i've been here 7 years, and for her to get promoted to "supervisor" before me, after being here one fucking year, that's bullshit."

sounds less like politics and more like she is taking it personally with you and she shouldn't. if she is unhappy or has concerns she should be addressing them with the Manager. some people resort to the fact that being miserable is how they want to .
it is a shame that she is 62 and maybe "still" has to work

I know what you mean. She's no ordinary 62 yr old though. She dresses very trendy, she has a lot of energy. I'd think she was in her late 40's early 50's. She's really sharp, except when it comes down to work. She's really a nice woman, but how nice is a person when they smile in your face and then constantly talk shit about you behind your back.
I can care less that she talks about me. Its the office, there's always someone thats going to be the bad seed. I dont live with these people, i dont have to come home to them. Their opinion of me really doesnt mean shit to me. Im just trying to develop a plan to maybe help her better understand her role here. My manager (that no longer works here) baby'd her. she would cover for her and do most of her work that she couldnt do and never told anyone she did that. Now that she's gone, This lady is going nuts because she really never did anything on her own.

Line of the Week!
Back on topic - here's my unsolicited advice. First get a copy of http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002ZPMLA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Then find ways to co-opt and neutralize your problem children. My suggestion for the old lady you're describing is find a gimmick you can dress up as giving her some new responsibility (while retaining the real power yourself). This way, you're seen by the rest of your crew as going out of your way to accomodate without seeming weak or power mad. If she still is a "problem" you've done your part and its easier to move her out.
Let me also repeat Ron's (unheeded) advice to Earl - dole out the compliments and credit in public and take care of the problems in private. And buy & bring in doughnuts once in awhile.
