joe morgan is the worst type of arrogant sports announcer. watching him last night brought it all back and quick! yes, joe, we know...no one was ever, nor ever will be better than the big red machine. half-way thru the game, i was thanking the baseball gods that at least he hadn't mentioned the big red machine, but of course, he couldn't make it to the end of the first broadcast of the season without bringing them up. i hate him more than any announcer, ever. thanks for bringing him to us every week, espn!
so, what announcers do you hate. and don't go with tim mccarver. everyone hates him. that's the hack response. :)

Aw Dammit! I really want to express how much I hate Tim Mccarver though! Here's another hack response, Joe Theisman. A Lot of football anouncer sucks though. I wonder why that is.

I used to hate Fran Healy when he did Mets games. He was such a fucking homer. The rest of my list goes like this:
Michael Kay
John Sterling
Suzyn Waldman
Joe Buck
The guys who do White Sox games on WGN

I hate all the yankee announcers for the same reason that you guys hate Morgan.

I can' stand either Morgan or Mccarver. Its so bad, if I'm watching a game there announcing, I'll usually end up yelling an insult at the TV at some point, if my wife hears me she alsways askes, "is it the black one or the white one?"

The worst thing about Morgan is that he's always talking about how bad the Moneyball type game is, even though he knows NOTHING about it, gets his facts wrong constantly, and never read the book.

Awful.. Yes Has all these great new things, like super slow mo replay, and pretty decent other guys, But the continue to have this awful buffoon as the lead announcer.. The only time i enjoy it, is when Leiter is there, he just calls him out and basically calls him an idiot every time.

I neither love, nor hate Morgan. He is one of the only people on television, though, who has not only a grasp on baseball concepts and fundamentals, but a better than elementary capability of articulating them. ESPN really screwed themselves when they fired Reynolds. On an aside, while I recognize the value of statistical analysis and sabermetrics in scouting, I maintain that a team that follows too closely the directives of moneyball will never find great postseason success ( the championship Red Sox, even with Bill James, weren't a true moneyball team).

It was a very good read. It really adds a whole new level to stats in baseball. It also got me very interested into a lot of other baseball books, especially ones by Bill James (The Historical Baseball Abstract was awesome).

Other than the obvious (the Big Red Machine, he's better than anyone), I don't like the fact that Morgan is a "Mid-West Homer". Trust me, I don't like Homers of any kind, but anytime a Mid-West team is playing an East Coast or West West team, he's obviously against them. Opening day, the cards hae the bases loaded, sharp grounder up the middle that Valentine makes a diving stop on to turn an inning ending double play ... the minute Valentine makes the stop Morgan sighs "Oh No". I also hate Keith Hernandez as a commentator.
yes, joe, we know...no one was ever, nor ever will be better than the big red machine.
I wish someone would point out to him that the Pittsburgh Pirates won as many World Series Championships in the 1970s as the Big Red Machine did.

The problem is he thinks the game hasn't changed at all in 30 years. If this was 1977, he'd be a genius. Since it's not, he sounds like a dinosaur.
And whoever said he's a "midwest homer"...are you high? The man practically spits venom when he calls a Cubs game. He might just be a default Cardinals homer because Joe Buck is.

I've never heard him call a Cubs game. You're probably right, I just assumed that the anti-east coast thing would automatically make him pro mid-west. Not that I really care either way, I don't like anyone who roots for a team while calling a national game. It's bad enough when local broadcasters do it.

I used to hate Pierre McQuire who does hockey broadcasts on TSN in Canada on a regular basis but also does the Sunday NBC games. All the prick would talk about is how shitty the composite sticks were and when one broke he would destroy the player for using them. If it wasn't that he was always talking about how some little player was a 'monster' cause he played with emotion. Now, I don't hate him I tolerate him. I just realized he's better than the colour guy from Jersey or Boston.
I do absolutely hate Glen Healy. The guy is pro union, pro Toronto and pro goalie. He is a useless commentator who should have gone into obscurity after his back-up career was over.
I miss John Davidson, he was the best colour man in the business.

I don't exactly remember the names, but whoever does the playbyplay, ringside analyst, etc for the Flyers. Over the weekend I was watching the Flyers/Rangers game (I was in PA) and they were just so horrible that I had to watch the game on mute.
Same for when the NHL was on ESPN and ESPN2. I think the guys name was Gary Thorne or something.

I like Joe Morgan. Maybe I am biased. As a kid I spent summers in Cincy at games. Joe Morgan would always sign autographs and talk to us before games. Back then he was one of the greatest 2B, but he acted like just another guy to us. If Morgan has any arrogance today, he earned it on the field.

I didn't say he was a bad guy...I said I've never talked to anyone that likes him as an analyst and a commentator. I note that you never at any point say you actually like him announcing games, so therefore my theory still stands.
And seriously, I don't care how good you are on the field, how does that excuse you being a douche later on? This guy has all but flat out said he's never voting for Ron Santo to be in the hall of fame. In the years before Sandberg got in, Morgan would always take shots at him like he didn't belong in the Hall either....and those are the examples I know of because I'm a Cubs fan. I've seen articles and sites railing him out for similar things for a bunch of other players and teams...plus the style of baseball he thinks is the best is completely outdated and he refuses to accept that there are newer mentalities and aspects to this game that are more important than what he thinks he knows.
Joe Morgan could be a great human being...but his knowledge of modern baseball is pathetic and he sounds like an idiot on the air.

yeah, i had a huge problem with him and the late 90s yankees. i can see if you don't like the yankees, that's cool by me. he just never gave them respect and spoke of them disdainfully and how they didn't compare to HIS big red machine. yuck.

I agree. And his radio show is almost unlistenable. But I do listen to him when there's a big Yankee story. Because lets face it, MadDog is clueless and Mike has no Yankee sources outside of the manager.
BTW- I LOVE Joe Morgan. Morgan/Miller are the best team in the biz.

I like Morgan as an announcer. AND I don't think Sandburg belongs in the hall of fame either. Dave Concepcion belongs in the hall of fame. Why isn't he there? I appreciate Morgan's historical perspective and don't see it as being outdated. My bias is growing up a fan of Morgan.

I like Morgan as an announcer. AND I don't think Sandburg belongs in the hall of fame either. Dave Concepcion belongs in the hall of fame.
So you're saying Sandberg doesn't belong in the HOF because Concepcion isn't in? How does that make any sense? For one, they didn't even play the same position, and secondly, why does one guy not being in somehow negate someone who is in? Concepcion does belong in the HOF...anyone who has eyes that can read stats knows that...so explain to me why Sandberg shouldn't be there.
Morgan doesn't like Sandberg because he broke his record for HR's as a 2nd baseman. He's a petty dick who constantly criticizes one of the main modern ways of thinking in baseball that is talked about in Moneyball, yet he refuses to read the book. I'm not saying that book is everything baseball is now, but it reflects a LOT of how the game is run and played these days, and Morgan is remaining willfully ignorant about it and sabermetrics in general, which he totally dismisses as being for "stat geeks." He sounds like an outdated idiot behind the microphone, and he can't keep his personal biases and vendettas quiet when he's calling certain teams. Fuck him and his unprofessional ass.
