I still have my old Fender Mustang from around 1981 when I was in HS. I remember my buddy had a fender jazz bass.

I have a 1975 Rickenbacker 4001 bass. It might be a 1976 model because it was made in December 1975. The truss rod cover is the old-style clear plexiglass with the Rickenbacker name printed on the back. The later ones were molded in white plastic with raised black letters like a license plate. It's in almost-perfect condition, even the back. I got it in 1984 for a scant $299.

So the thread isn't meaningless...

Me playing it back in the '80s. Nice Bowie mullet on me, huh?
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/hughbond/VFW1.jpg

I also have a cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard with a plus top (the one I played at the Bash) and a sunburst American Standard Telecaster. Both were made in the mid '90s but the designs are over 50 years old. I generally don't go for the new-style, high-tech stuff.

Of course he's drinking Old Style. I wish there was a way to type a Chicago accent.

Wow Mister!
You played at a club when people could still smoke inside?

How old ARE you?

teehee.

My dad actually had the opportunity to get a 56' Precision Bass from a relative(after said relative passed away) My Pop even took it to Mandolin Bros to have it appraised...They said about 6-7K...It was used well and had lots of checking...
He passed it up and bought a Sadowsky instead from Roger in Brooklyn.

Now we are both proud owners of new "Vintage Style" Jazz basses.

Here's a pic I took of the two basses when I visited him last month in NC.

That's a gorgeous Ric. I have a 2003 Blue one and I friggin love it, but a 75? Wow.

Does it have numbers on the input jack plate? After a certain year Ric started putting serial numbers on the plate, and the rickenbacker website has a lookup thing that gives you the month and year of manufacture.

The interesting thing about Early 80's Jazz basses and PBasses is that they are notoriously HEAVY...and are usually made out of leftover 70's parts.
You could have either a really good example of a Fender Jazz...or a real clunker.

Let see a pic. I love talking shop.
I can help you identify lots of stuff about it if you get some good pics.

Thanks! It's a great bass. It plays great and has that Ric tone.

Yes, it has the code on the jack plate. I decoded it years ago using a guide in a book on Rickenbackers. I'll plug the code into the website and see if it tells me anything different.

Those are both very cool basses. I think I would've opted for the '56 though as long as it played well and sounded good. It sounds like it had a story to tell.

That photo was actually a party held at a VFW hall in Addison, IL, in about 1989. As far as I know, you can still smoke in bars and even restaurants in Illinois. The last time we were out there (July '06) you could. I hate it and I especially hated it when I was singing in those smoky clubs.

I have a hard time considering 5-string basses "Vintage Style" unless it's something like a Fender Bass V like this one from 1965:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/hughbond/Retro_FenderBassV.jpg

I own a 2000 Jazz Bass (4-string) and it's a great bass. I just classify the 5-string and other modified versions to be modern updates. I even have a hard time thinking of my Jazz Bass as "Vintage Style" since it never had the pickup and bridge covers.

I love those 4001 basses, I think I want one of those more than any other musical instrument.

I have the anithesis of a 4001, a '75 3/4 size model 950 (http://www.rickenbacker.com/gallery_image.asp?archive_id=1937&gallery_year=1970), except black.

I love the little thing but I look like a complete tool playing it, it's so small and I'm a big guy.

The Ric website confirmed December 1975. The plate has OL at the top and a 3-digit serial at the bottom. Rickenbacker started that system in November of 1960. 1960 was represented by the letter J, then 1961 started with A. O (15th letter of alphabet) is 1975 and L (12th letter of alphabet) is December.

That's pretty cool! What does it sound like? How does it play?

I used to have access to a Rickenbacker 620. It had great tone though the tone got crappy if you rolled off the volume. My biggest complaint with it was that the fretboard was narrow so the strings were too close together. It played okay but, coming from my Les Paul, the string spacing took a little getting used to.

Rickenbacker had a lot of unusual guitars. If I had the money I'd try to collect a nice cross-section of them.

Snobs?!?!?! Is THIS snobby???

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c161/hughbond/P7190004.jpg

I bought this Harmony Marquis at a J.C. Penny's outlet store in 1983 for $79. I put a Duncan Jazz pickup in the neck, a Duncan JB in the bridge and a Duncan Vintage Strat stag-mag in a custom rout in the middle. The humbuckers are 4-conductor wired so the coils are independent. I re-wired it to have a master volume (with a capacitor that makes it sound brighter as you turn it down) and a master tone. Then it has three separate volumes, one for each pickup that are also push-pull switches. The push-pulls switch the humbuckers between humbucking and single-coil and the middle pickup on and off, adding it to whatever mix the humbuckers are set to using the regular Les Paul-style switch. It has 17 different pickup configurations and the separate volume pots let the pickups be mixed with infinite variability. It's the most versatile guitar I've ever owned and the total investment was around $350.

those two single coils put out a surprisingly fat tone, I like to put an overdrive on it and boost the treble and base and play some fat, bar-chordy riffs. its the best fuzz I've ever been able to create. The drawbacks are the same as you mention for the 620, loses tone and it has a narrow fretboard.

It also has a nice fat clean sound, with a good sustain (must be the neck-through-body) I would go so far as to compare it to a hollow-body, good for some slow-bluesy leads.

I'm with you on the Rickenbacker collection, if only...

I love vintage and customized guitars more than any other, I mean I would take a beat up old Rick or Fender or Gibson (even a Danalectro) over a PRS anyday (even though PRS's are amazing guitars).

I couldnt find a picture of my actual Rich- because it was a color I custom ordered- they typically only come sunburst with red- Mine is just plain red with double binding.

As much as I love the look of les pauls and Gretch Silver jets- I cant play them. The action is soooo high and the neck is real wide compared to a Rich or a Fender and I have short fingers so I struggle playing them. To Gibsons credit- I love the old SG with the double hum-buckers- they have such a unique sound.

jetdog
03-29-2007, 05:22 PM
I know what you mean, those Gibsons especially have some tricky action, there is a very small window between getting them where you want and fret-buzz, and they're some heavy fuckers too. I tend to like Fenders in terms of playability, but I'll admit nothing can compete with that fat gibson sound when you want it.

1928 National Resophonic Style 1 Tricone ser.# 996. This is 1 of the 1st 1000 original resophonic guitars in the United States & it's completely handmade (B4 they employed the metal stamping process to make the front & sides all outta 1 piece)!!! It's a squareneck and can only be played as a lap slide & is made of "German Silver" which is neither from Germany nor actual silver... go figure??? Resophonic guitars employ a process of "mechanical amplification" using a resonator cone (this one uses 3), like a speaker cone in an electric amplifier, as a diaghram which directs the sound pressure formed in the body chamber outward. This guitar was once the property of the legendary Tampa Red (it was his "knockaround," ha ha ha)!!!

One thing I wish I knew how to play is that blues steel guitar style- but Im just a Rock-n-Roll white boy.

Yeah, at first the bands I liked influenced my guitar choices too. I had a Led Zep shirt for every day of the week and then some, so I would have killed for a Les Paul. But since then I've had the opportunity to play a good amount of guitars, and also I've branched out, so now I'm pretty set in my ways and wants when it come to guitars.

I like so much music out there now (from the Pogues to Hot Water Music to Gogol Bordello to the Band to Firewater, etc.) something tells me I would die if I saw Bobo's collection.

To get back to your question though, I've become completely infatiuated with Joe Strummer's work, and I'm constantly having to talk myself out of beating up my new Telecaster to look like his.

I still want a '77-'78 Gibson Les Paul Artisan, an '83-'84 Fender Telecaster Elite and a '74-'75 Gibson L6-S because Dave Davies played them in the Kinks. All three are like a Les Paul but each with its own twist on the concept.

Yeah, that 620 was kinda Les Paul-like in what it could do yet didn't sound like one. The tone with overdrive was really nice....smooth and fat....not at all like the jangly sound everyone associates with Rickenbackers, though it got that too with a clean sound.

I've like my action REALLY low and I've never had a problem with any Gibson, especially my Les Paul. You have to have the neck set perfectly straight. If you try to give it that Fender relief, it'll get a hump in the fretboard around the 12th fret that'll buzz. Also, if you over-correct you'll get buzz.

The neck is wider, though, and there's less real estate on the fretboard on the outside of the high E string up around the 12th-15th frets so you have to be more careful not to slip off the edge.

Yeah, I've seen L6-Ss for about that much, too. Those are all maple and have the 5-way pickup selector knob with Bill Lawrence pickups. They're a great deal as long as the original electronics are intact. Many of them got swapped to standard humbuckers and a 3-way Les Paul switch because guys didn't want to mess with the 5-way knob on stage. It makes it simpler but it kills the unique sound.

Here's one:

I looked it up. Introduced in 1983.

Since Les Paul owned it, there's a chance it's a prototype or very early production model. I doubt he ever has to buy a Gibson and, for him to have owned such a late model, low-end guitar, I could see them giving him a very early one to evaluate since his name is on it.

Mosrite was a cheap brand in the '60s. They made a deal with the Ventures to have a Ventures model and they played them briefly back then.....or at least posed for photos like they were playing them.

The price tag is on nostalgia. It's like the way guys these days will pay $20+K for a '66 Malibu ($2200 when new; $800 in 1980) with a 283-2bbl because it came from the musclecar era but it's not a musclecar because it had a low-perf, micro-small block engine.

It's all about the guys who were kids in the '60s and in their late-40s/early-50s now and have the money to buy the stuff their parents wouldn't buy them 40-45 years ago.

I've seen original MPC 1969 Dodge Charger model kits ($2 when new) go for $300+ while you can go to Walmart and buy a new, better-quality Revell 1969 Dodge Charger model kit for $10-12. People do stupid things when they let their emotions spend their money.

Vintage doesn't mean it's good!

You've always gotta play the stuff and see if it's any good if you're actually gonna use it. New or old, if it plays and sounds like magic when it's in your hands, then it's up to you what magic is worth.

Then there are guys with money falling out of their pockets who just want to put something old (a.k.a. vintage) on a shelf.

I love mine. I ordered a stereo cord for it and that's all I use for recording. Splitting the pickups hard left/right sounds HUGE! I actually have to tone it down so it doesn't dominate the mix. Naaah. It's from 1987. It's a cassette 4-track with dbx noise reduction and a 6-channel stereo mixer. It's a good deck but to get really good results you also need a standard cassette deck that also has dbx. Mine is an Aiwa from about 1990. I'd fill up the four tracks on the Tascam with two stereo mixes, then play another stereo mix live as I mixed it down onto the Aiwa, mixing 6 down to 2. Then I'd swap tapes between the Tascam and the Aiwa and repeat. The two tracks from the Aiwa became tracks 1 & 2 on the Tascam with 3 & 4 empty and ready to record. You get lots of layers that way without losing generations. I'd record the bass and guitars direct (late '90s Pandora's Box) so live mixes are possible without having an amp blaring in the room. It's crude but effective. Oh, yeah....and the drums are an old Yamaha RX11 drum machine but I played it live like a keyboard instead of programming it.

That stuff is old but hardly "vintage"!!! I've got a hard-disk digital workstation now. That's a much better route to take.

Agreed Bobo. For the money, there are many guitars I would chose over the Mosrite. The Mosrite Ventures model in Guitar Center happens to be the one I played from about 14 to 18 years of age (not one like it, but the one...pock marks and all). so the nostalgia factor is huge for me.

I remember it had extemely low action and a very thin neck like a ric. I used to play it through an ampeg Jet. It was a hell of a combo.

I would love to see your collection someday....or maybe just a Uke lesson or two.

I only used it "live" at home. You need two amps and, because the sound is so different between the two sides, I never thought it would work well live. If you want to bi-amp, though, that would be the ultimate crossover!

Come to think of it, it would probably sound cool to run the treble pickup into a slightly dirty amp with a mic and the neck pickup into a clean direct box to play live. You'd need a good sound man mixing you because your tone would be entirely in his hands.

The cable cost me something like $25 back in the '80s. I just ordered it through my local music store and it was not made by Rickenbacker. It's looks kinda like a lamp cord with two thin cables molded together but both sides are shielded. At the instrument end is a 1/4" stereo plug and the other end splits the two cables apart and each has a standard 1/4" plug on it. I'd guess you could get one under $50 today or even make one yourself.

If you get one, let me know how it works out.

A Mosrite would be cool to have after you've collected everything else but still have the urge for something more or something really unusual to pull out onstage. $6K is too steep though!

Was the neck thin or narrow or both? When I think of Rickenbackers, I'm always more struck by the narrowness of the fretboards. The necks are thin but the narrowness overshadows that to me.

Just curious...what is the difference between a 4001 and a 4003?

there are a couple esthetic differences: some 4003's have a two piece pick guards, and some have the truss rod adjuster at the body end of the neck.
but the main difference between the two is: the 4003's neck is designed to take the higher tension of a round wound string.

rickenbacker stopped making the 4001 in the early eighty's.

I'd volunteer but I'd be better as a Dave than a Ray. I'll have to take the plunge on that Les Paul Artisan or Telecaster Elite to really nail it.

You're gonna have to lose that Jazz Bass and play with a pick, too. If you go late-era Kinks you'll need a short-scale Fender Mustang like Jim Rodford played. Pete Quaife ('60s) played a Rickenbacker 4001-S (the export version with dot inlays and no binding) and the occasional Danelectro or P-Bass. John Dalton played a P-Bass early on then switched to a Ric 4001.

How about calling it "One for the Road" or "State of Confusion" and doing approximately the same material they did on tour in the early '80s when they were most popular?

A 4001 has a laminated neck with a strip of dark wood down the center. The 4003 has a solid neck without the stripe. That was done for round-wound strings. You're only supposed to use flatwounds on a 4001 but that never stopped anyone. Mine has had round-wounds for the 23 years I've owned it and it's fine.

I played one of the Epiphones a few years ago and loved it. I didn't buy it, though. I've considered getting one since I don't have a semi-hollowbody.

I knew someone with a 335 who damaged it horribly by stepping on the cable as he was standing up. He'd left just enough slack to get upward momentum, then CRUNCH! The jack was pretty much ripped right out of the top. I'd strongly recommend putting the cable through the strap to prevent that from happening. That and feedback are the two potential problems.

If anyone objects to derailing this thread a little, I'll be happy to start a general guitar discussion thread, but I think there is a dedicated group that frequents this thread to the point that we might just as well discuss all guitar topics here.

Anyway the point is, I've been feinding after a hollow body electric and I'd love to hear anybodies opinion on any that they've played. In general I encounter a lot of Ibanez in my price range, but I'been really disapointed with their sound. I know epiphone makes a lot of affordable models, any opinions on these?

Epiphone's are AMAZING. I had an Epiphone Sheraton and it was absolutely beautiful. I had no occasion to play it, though, so I got rid of it. My Epiphone SG sounds better and is more playable than a Gibson for a fifth of the price.

Telecaster7 just bought an Epiphone Semi-hollow and he loves it. I can't remember if he got the Sheraton or the Casino, though.

I've never even heard of baritone guitars before. Has anybody played one?
I love the idea of having some deep, deep sounds but still being able to head upstairs.
I can't stop drooling over this Jaguar!

I've been masturbating to the Fender Jaguar Bass for two years.

Love.

We really don't have enough guitarists on this board...

I have 2 guitars (acoustic and electric) and a bass.

They're all what I could afford.

I'm waiting for life not to be so expensive so I can get a Mex Strat. I still regret selling my Les Paul (Epiphone - *grumble* I never own original gear) for $40 during a more interesting period of my life.

Currently I have a 70's rickenbacker (see earlier in this thread), a beautiful taylor, and a Mexican Tele (my Mexicaster), which sounds fucking amazing through my Fender blues deville.

Doug fantasizes about being:

Slash, Dimebag and Zakk Wylde on any given evening.

Mostly Dimebag it looks like.

Anyone here have any experience with the Rondo Agile series guitars? Korean copies of some of the big names. I have read good things, but never handled one. There is a guy sorta near me selling off a few "like-new" ones at a steal, but I won't pick them up if they are Squier quality.

I learned how to play on my Pop's Kay TrueTone Speed Demon. It's still my favorite guitar in the world. Whenever I visit I'll inevitably end up sneaking to the back room and playing it in some attempt to relive my formative years.

They're good, but HEAVY.

I would pick one up if it's really inexpensive.

Hey Rich,

Al has an Agile ES-335 copy. I played it before you got there and it was pretty awesome.

Way to be completely inside!

Yea, they are cool guitars! I remember a guy I was in a band with previously tried one of these out...

I bought the Agile LP copy (3000 series), will give a review when I get it and set it up. If it makes any decent sound at all, it has to be worth the money. I debated on the semi-hollowbody too, but just wasn't sold. If I like the LP, maybe that will be the next purchase.

This is developing into a problem.

I will never forget in high school when my friend, and guitarist in our band, was able to borrow a Danelectro. The case was the amp, and you could get some wicked feedback off the thing. That's mainly how I enjoyed the guitar, but my friend the guitarist really liked the guitar for what it was.

Oooops! But didn't Sears make the Danelectro as well and have the same kind of case/amp.
They're similar is what I'm getting at.

Here we go. A Silvertone Danelectro with amp and case.
