FUCK YOU IN YOUR FUCKING ASS.

So I have bought a brand new laptop. And as standard operating procedure for me, I start stripping out the pre-loaded software and get it to my own standards.

Of course, the first mistake being? VISTA DOESN'T WORK WITH ZONEALARM.

I have a feeling that Vista doesn't work with AVG, PeerGuardian, or anything else I use.

Anyone have a Dell XP Laptop disk they want to let me borrow.

God, this fucking software sucks.

I agree. Return it if it's sucking balls. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get your money back.

Call up and sternly (hoo hoo) tell the fucking savage on the phone that you want to return it because you are completely dissatisfied. Then when they try to give you the run around, yell at them until you get an English speaking supervisor and he should be able to actually start helping you.

its not a great deal if you have to take out the operating system to reinstall xp. Your better off buying a new laptop with xp preinstalled, like a leftover. They are real cheap now. I'm waiting for all the stupid bugs to get worked out of vista then buy a new one. Until then I'm just going to upgrade the ram. I need to find the thread that we discussed upgrading ram, how to do it and to find the ram that works in my laptop.
If anyone finds that thread before me post it or bump it.

Good move - stick with XP for now.

Vista is essentially XP Service Pack 3.0 - it is graphically "pretty" and has some neat content, but the "problems" far outweigh the benefits IMO.

EX: Working on your Network Connection settings has become a Cluster-F in Vista. It takes 3x's the number of clicks to get to the info you need, and that is if you know where to look.

I hate to say it, but it seems like Vista is Microsoft's attempt to to make Windows look/feel like a MacBook.

Update.

I called Dell and spoke to several people from India, one of whom I complimented on "sounding exactly like Mohinder", before finally getting a person who could get things done.

What I WANTED to do was exchange restore CDs. I would wipe the drive and re-install XP. They said no. Instead, they said that they would exchange my system for an XP system for free, and try to get my system "as close as possible" to the original.

I am now awaiting their response, which can take a few days. If they offer me a computer that has less stuff than the original, I will tell them to go screw. I was warned that I can't just wipe the drive because "the computer is built for Vista" and i was like, "Oh? Because I just built the same system ON YOUR WEBSITE WITH XP."

god, this is stupid.

99% of tech support people are just reading off a script and have no idea what they're talking about anymore. Escalate to supervisor to manager to director until they give you what you want. God I hate customer service agents (Disclaimer: except the ones that may happen to also be registered users of this forum or fans of TINR, in which case I will set hatred aside until I've gotten to know you well enough to evaluate value of said level of emotional attachment.)!!!

Vista is evil.

Vista is not yours when you buy it. It remains the property of microsoft. its pure horseshit. they tried to do it when they rolled out XP but met with too much flack from users, so they kinda scaled that idea back. Now for whatever reason they got it through this time with Vista and all the sheeple here in the US are just going along with it.

Vista also checks in with MS when you go online with it, and its pretty well hidden. you would have to be good at packet sniffing to find it. They eventually want to ease it into tattle tale'n on you when you use pirated software. I would like to ease several copies up Bill Gates arse.

I would never think about Linux, but I did download Fedora and am learning to us eit on a second PC in the house. Open source is the way to go. Or XP Professional with SP2 on a CD/DVD (check your favorite torrent site) is always good to have around the house.

i just installed a copy of vista ultimate on a whim a couple weeks ago. my computer was purchased in the summer of 2002 and while ive upgraded peripherals, RAM, and the graphics card over the past six months, the motherboard and processor and drives are still the same as when i bought it from dell just before college. ive had zero problems, freeze ups, or blue screens of death with vista. dont ask me what i did. only a minor issue is that my wireless internet drops out sometimes for a couple minutes, but this was a problem that came and went on XP too, so i assume it has more to do with the house network.

ive basically been amazed given all the negative publicity from people i know and respect on computer issues. most folks i know have no desire to upgrade because of what they've heard. it seems my experience cannot be shared by many, but i can honestly say i've enjoyed using vista thus far. the programs i use often but open and close constantly (firefox, games, word, etc) load faster than they did on xp. aesthetically, im defintely enjoying the os x-inspired upgrades, but i used programs before on xp that simulated these kinds of things, like desktopx and windowsblinds. the graphical components of windows vista use more memory than a basic windows interface, but it is a tradeoff im willing to make, and have made for some time, out of personal preference. though my window of experience with vista has been limited to a couple weeks, so far so good.

also this is probably the most ive said on this board in months

Snacks, no offense, I put in a year at Lucent, and I'm pretty tech-saavy, no matter what JustJon says. I can do an installation.

See, here's the thing; I got the XP license at a discount AND I still keep my Vista license, so when Vista is a bit more stable, say, a year down the road, I can upgrade. That's one of the reasons why I didn't want to swap back and do it myself.

That being said, the new laptop is pretty sweet. XP is working like a charm and I'm in the middle of doing all my installs right now.

I'm not emotionally attached to my operating system.

in art school everyone talked about how great apple was for this or that. when in reality its cheaper to build your own pc(desktop) they just lacked the knowledge
or build it. Or even a Linux box that was designed to do just those processes that would run significantly quicker-

its only emotional because these people have bought into the marketing of a company.
bought into the idea that one company is better because their product looks a little different and the security is better (not because its a safer system, but beacue the platform of buissness is what the hackers use because they are in business(sp)).

I'm not against apple, but its not a solution to having problems with vista, it is a backhanded way of saying I solved the problem when you didn't, you just gave up on it.

oh and dell sucks

I don't get the Mac Smugness either. The problems with viruses and BSODs and other issues that Macs claim they protect against is because the majority of people who use computers are simply not tech-saavy enough to protect themselves, and if something DOES go wrong, they are not tech-saavy enough to fix the problems themselves.

Liz wants a MacBook because it's "cute". I priced one out, and for the cost of it, I could buy TWO laptops.

I understand, but when the most important piece of software I use (zonealarm) and another important piece of software (peerguardian) doesn't work, I don't want to use it.

Better to use XP until all the bugs are worked out of Vista.

Have you tried the new "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" program? Security should be one of the things Microsoft got right in Vista. Just type in Firewall on the start menu and you should see it.

I'm happy with Zonealarm. I didn't like the clunky interface of Vista. I'm very reticent to change; it's why my XP looks like Windows98SE and why my FireFox looks like IE.

what does that mean "you let http" ?
I use peerguardian but never understand it b/c it doesnt have instructions on how to set everything up and what each thing does.

So if I download zonealarm I will be covered from people seeing IP's and trying to steal shit from my computer? Can I still use my same anitvirus or no?

Zonealarm doesn't protect your IP being visible; it is strictly to protect your COMPUTER from hackers. That's what a firewall does.

Peerguardian prevents other IPs that are on a blacklist from connecting to your computer if you are on a peer network, like Bit Torrent.

When I mean "I allow HTTP", I mean that I allow peer guardian to allow companies that are on the "blacklist" to connect to me through the HTTP protocol.

If you don't want people to see what IP you're using, you'd need a proxy server, which is another can of worms entirely.

OK - Vista is not evil, but I don't see it as a solid substitute for XP. The graphics use more system resources, MS has added levels of complexity that are unnecessary, and there are a lot of programs (older and newer), that won't work on Vista.

Plus if you are going to use Vista, put it on a clean (reformatted) machine. I did the upgrade from XP and it was far from a smooth transition. It took forever and i had to strip or reinstall a lot of my programs.

And no, I'm not a retard. I drew the short straw at work and have to test Vista on my system since we will be getting more and more Vista systems to work on from here on out. Plus, many employees purchased systems shortly before the Vista release and have vouchers for Vista. Therefore, I had to go "worst case scenario" when I switched the OS.

I would just like to point out that you should not be mad at vista, but actually mad at Zonealarm because they are the ones who have not brought out the update to be compatible with vista, and they have been criticized for it since Vista first came out. Mcafee and Norton both came out with Vista compatible products right away, zonealarm hasn't. You should really be mad at them, not vista.

Norton's firewall is bloated as shit. And there's also a major difference between ZoneAlarm and Norton - ZoneAlarm's FREE. So I'm not going to bitch if my free product isn't immediately compatible.

The deal is this - with every single OS, there's at least six months to a year before a good portion of the bugs are worked out and it's stablized. It was that way with 98 (98SE), 2000, ME (GAH!) and XP.

And my anger isn't totally centered on Vista. It's a combination of:

1) Vista for being buggy and bloated.

2) Dell not offering a choice between XP and Vista when I bought my laptop.

3) Dell Customer Service offering me a somewhat asinine option to get XP.

But I'm good. I got a great deal on a laptop, I have XP on it, and I have Vista license once the software stabilizes.

Wow Vista is turning out to be a disaster for Microsoft. I dont know one person who liked it better or who sees the need for Vista over XP. I think one of the things that Vista has scared people with is all the so called security stuff. They say it is to help the users protect their computer but I have read its software that helps micosfot spy on what we do online. IDK but Vista seems like one big mess and I was so excited to get it!
