I wanted to start a thread where my fellow pet owners can let each other know about pet related stuff. Cheap meds, cool toys, anything pet related.
Here's a starter
Petshed (https://www.petshed.com/heartgard.asp)
I had no idea there are generics available for pets. This site has a generic version of Heartgard at HALF the price. Its a real good idea to use for the warm weather months, especially if you take your dog to parks where there are other dogs around.

Our Sharpei/Black&Tan is about 7 years old. For the past year, she had been getting sluggish, which we took to be a sign of aging. A few month's ago, her razzle dazzle for life dramatically declined, so we took her to our vet (my uncle-in-law).
He diagnosed her with Addison's, which means that her adrenal glands don't function properly, affecting the electrolyte content of her blood. Now she's on prednazone daily and a monthly mineral shot and she is feeling great.
This is something to watch for in your dogs.

I have a 3 year old German Shorthair Pointer, and he always seems to have soreness or tenderness in his joints. It alternates legs but it seems like at any given time he is favoring one leg or the other. Does anyone know of anything I can give him to remedy his aches? Or has anyone delt with this? When he was young we were told by a vet it is growing pains but he is 3 now so what gives?

Double check with the vet since the problem still exists. I'm not sure if German short-hairs are susceptible to hip dysplasia. We gave our old lab glucosimine pills for a while and it seemed to help her.

If you haven't visited already, I heard alot of great things about OV, went there, ordered a bottle of oral cleanser,...I got 3 bottles, called them, they said they had extra surplus of it and sent it complimentary.
I was thinkin if they were unloading it and just saying "it's on us" but this product is expensive and recommended by every vet I've asked, I get everything from there now.

Great idea to have a place to talk about pet issues!
Anyone know anything about Westies? My dog is half westie and we're contemplating getting a second pup. Just wondering if anyone a) knew any tri-state area breeders and b) had anything to say about how they interact with other pets.
Also, here is my baby, Piper:

If you do, I'd suggest you get a puppy. Adopting an older dog if you already have one can be very tricky. The dog who was there first usually gets very territorial, and they can fight alot. If you get a puppy, the older dog is much less likely to feel threatened by the new addition.

Buddy is 2 years and 7 months old, now. He's a very happy and friendly guy.
He doesn't look too happy in this pic, because I think he senses the neutering debate that's going on around him.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/snowmaninva66/DSCN0569acopy.jpg
I think he should be neutered. He gets very "excited" at times. My father is afraid it will change Buddy's cheerful personality. Though I know it would change things about him, I think it would be for the best.
What do you think? Keep in mind... Buddy has NO access to female dogs, so puppy over population shouldn't be an issue. However... he's a very strong guy, and can easily escape from my son, my father, or me if he smells a very hot bitch in the area. We've done a good job at keeping Buddy in control, in the 2 years he's lived with us. But he can be very sneaky, and like said... he's very strong. It's up to him, if he decides to run off and get laid. Besides... I don't want him humping people's legs.
So... should he get snipped, or not?

I know I've bugged people about this in the chat, but here goes, I worked with this dog personally for a year, he really is sweet and does not deserve to die in a cage.

Blaze
BLAZE is a 6-7 yr. old roan/brindle American Staffordshire Terrier.
He is a beautiful light brindle roan color with a bit of silver shot through his dignified face. Blaze was surrendered to us by his owner to us in August 2004.His owner was moving out of state and could not take Blaze. He was in the same home with this person since he was a pup. He was taken from the only home he ever knew and brought to our shelter. While we are caring for him, it can never replace the home and love he once knew. He is really a love bug that is very happy to place a game of toss outside or just cuddle up next to your feet as you watch TV.
Blaze is a bit wary of strangers at first. However, once he gains your trust, you have a friend for life. His ideal home would be a low traffic household with adults and/or teenaged children. He is fine with cats and some dogs after a slow introduction.
He has been enrolled in our in-house shelter training program which is giving him the structure he likes and various activities to keep him busy. He really enjoys following commands, is eager to please and easily correctable.
Won’t you please help us find a forever home for this very deserving guy? He does not deserve to spend the rest of his life in a shelter.

He's hardly eaten any of his food for about 3 or 4 days. He's eating his biscuits and his treats, but he's hardly touching his food. He's not acting sick. He seems fine in every other way. It's the same food he's been eating for two years. They did change the look of the package, but I don't think they changed the formula.

Clip him, and also, schedule a vet appointment. Doesn't sound like an emergency but your doc may want to pull bloods to rule out anything.
Gwen, don't go to a breeder. Adopt from a shelter.
Heartguard is a good idea YEAR ROUND, not just in the warmer months. It is also not only for dogs that go to dog runs - it prevents heartworms, which are NOT contracted from contact with other dogs. It is contracted from mosquito bites. So whether your dog goes to a run or not, it should be on it. Contact with other dogs is irrelevant.
It is also easier in the long run to keep your dog on it year round - otherwise, ever spring you're going to be scheduling a vet visit to pull blood and have a heartworm test done. It can be very bad if you give heartguard (or interceptor, etc.) to a dog who already has heartworms. Since they can be asymptomatic, doing a blood test is the only way you're going to know every spring that your dog is heartworm free before starting on the heartguard or interceptor and that you're not putting them in danger.
Frontline (flea/tick preventative) is fine to use only in the warmer months. But heartguard should be year round.
Oh, and I get my meds from vetshoponline, and have been for years with no problems.

for cat towers i recommend cat condo heaven (http://www.catcondoheaven.com/). they sell enormous cat condos (if you have multiple cats and room to put one). that are incredible. they're a bit pricey, but when you see what other places (http://www.cattrees.com/tree.htm) charge (for lesser quality construction and size), it's really a bargain. PLUS, they sell thru ebay as well, and if you have the time, you can get their products for a lot cheaper. btw, we got the triple 7 (http://www.catcondoheaven.com/triple7.html) about two years ago and it's still going strong.

Thanks for responding TC! He's eating a little more, but I'm still going to schedule an appointment for him. I've already decided to get him clipped, but he could use a vet visit anyway. After watching all the stuff on the news about the bad dog and cat food (Buddy's food isn't part of this whole thing) and seeing the pet owners crying really got me worried lately. I've only had him for two years, but I can't imagine how I'd deal with anything happening to him, now.

I have plenty of Westie friends who show them etc. They are Terriers so they are stubborn as hell! However, they all seem to get along fine with each other as they have all been socialized since brith. Maybe getting a puppy would be your best bet or try the West Highland White Terrier Club of America. I know they have a rescue group who tempermant checks all of their rescues and could guide you to getting the right dog for your home.

Most areas have breed clubs which you can find at the AKC.org which have lists of breeders and dogs available for rescue. There are hundreds of puppy mill dogs available for rescue and if you aren't going to show I say that is the road to go.
I live with Bull Terriers. They aren't as fiesty as Scotties or Westies just want to play on their own terms but I love them and will always have a Bullie or three in my life. My second fav. breed to watch as shows are the Bulldogs. I love thier little butts and big heads.

You heard me right. I bought a
Woolrich Dog Bed at Target
for my baby Girl Mabel last week. Cost about $25. The next day, I come home and her face is all puffy like a Sharpei and she has hives all over her. I run her to a Vet, and they said she had an allergic reaction, to what they don't know. Could be a spider bit her, or from something else. They give her a shot, charge me $200 and send me home. I bring her to work with me the next day, she's fine. I leave her home again the day after and again, I come home and she's got hives all over her. I take her back to the Vet (another $175) and he asks me If I've bought her anything new, like a bed. I said yes, I took the bed away from her and she's been fine ever since.
You've been warned.

Depending on where you are, figure $50-$100 for the office visit and $30-$40 for each shot (definitely rabies since it's required by law, and probably distemper (recommended, but some people decline)). For example at my clinic in Manhattan, we charge $70 for the exam (it's an exam - you should do it annually even if you decline vaccines because the doctor will feel for lumps and bumps and whatnot which could become bad in the future) and then $35 for each vaccine. You can often get vaccines inexpensively at vaccination fairs at places like petco etc., or at the humane society.

And yes they should have distemper but a second rabies is not necessary if they are strictly indoor.

Bitter Apple spray worked for the dog. It really tastes horrid, I accidentally touched the wires I sprayed with it and then ate something and my entire mouth tasted metallic.

My cats had a bad reactions to their first round of vaccines. I took them in for a checkup a few weeks ago, and the vet said it was ok for me to not update their shots since they are indoors. You are always taking a chance that they could contract something if they get out though.

I think it's a good idea to always take them in for the scheduled shots and ask, i got a new vet cause i moved, and looking at my cats previous records, (indoor only) she said for the distemper, she was being over vaccinated, considering the type of vaccine and the intervals.
So she skipped the distemper. She's one of the top veterinarians in the DC/MD/VA area so she should know, lucky to get her.
She also switched my cat to a new type of rabies shot that doesn't use an ingredient (formerly used in all rabies shots) that's been known to make cats susceptible to certain respitory dieases.
edit: BTW, here in VA rabies shots is mandatory, for us, no choice but to takem in.

07-03-2007, 08:58 PM
The only shot that is strictly necessary is rabies, and that is because it is required by law. With that said, my own cat (whom I euthanized last year) had not had a rabies shot in probably 6 years. I never got him any shots after he became a strictly indoor cat. Generally, a 3 year rabies vaccine can be given (though I've heard of some counties which require a yearly vaccine)
If you elect not to vaccinate for rabies, if you do ever have to take your cat in to the vet for other reason (sickness, I suppose), you'll have to fill out a waiver saying that you are declining the rabies vaccination. If your cat ever bites anyone (and the sweetest cat in the world will bite given the wrong circumstances - heck, it could be developing some kind of neurological problem you don't physically see and just go nuts) and that person has to go to the doctor (good chance with a cat bite), the bite will (by law) be reported to animal control/department of health and you'll have to go through all kinds of crud - depending on the state, there will be fines, and your pet will be seized. Keep in mind that rabies vaccines are only once every three years at most vets (a few will do a two year vaccine for whatever reason - and this assumes you keep up to date; if you get really late with a three year vaccine, the next one when you finally get one will only be a one year one, and then one year subsequent you'll get a three year, does that make sense?) so it really shouldn't be too much of a hassle (or cost).
The distemper is not required by law, but is a good idea because a lot of the viruses covered by the distemper shot (panleukopenia, the actual distemper part, and then also usually herpes, calicivirus and chlamydia) can be transmitted by air, and are very hardy. They're also generally deadly if your cat contracts them. It's possible that a single vaccination can provide protection for multiple years; at my practice we don't do titers on cats but perhaps at your doctor they do. On dogs we do distemper/parvo titers and only vaccinate if their titers are low (we always do rabies regardless of titer due to the law).
Again, the vaccinations in and of themselves should hopefully not really be too much of a financial strain (you're looking at $35 every 3 years for rabies and $35 every year for distemper if you come to my practice; it's a less at the humane society, mobile vaccination clinics, etc.) - what's more expensive is the annual exam. If your cat is young and healthy, then eh, I say (and this is just my personal opinion, not any sort of veterinary advice) no, you probably don't need to go for your annual exam every year. But once the cat starts getting older (8-9-10), yeah, you should probably go for the exam. The doctor will feel things that you can't, and may catch things before they become serious enough to cause detectable changes in your cat's behavior. Who knows, maybe if I'd taken my cat for yearly physicals, they would have caught the tumor in his belly before it got too big to surgically remove.
Dogs are a different story, since they presumably go out and about in the world more than cats. Definitely rabies vaccinate (they can seize your dog for not being vaccinated whether it's bitten someone or not), definitely do at least two sets of distemper/parvo vaccinations (puppy set, and then one year after), and then do titers in the subsequent years until antibody levels drop below an acceptable level of protection (there are dogs at my clinic who are going on 4 years of not being distemper vaccinated). As for the other stuff, bordatella if you need it because your dog grooms or boards, lyme possibly (discuss with your vet; try frontline and a preventic collar first - the lyme vaccine is not totally effective plus it can have side effects), lepto possibly (depends on where you are), and annual exams definitely!!!!
Annual exams are not just a time for getting shots. They're exams! Far cheaper to pay for the exams and have something caught than to pay all the hospital bills after the fact!

I have a cat who 3 different vets can not determine what is wrong with her. She has been occassionally vomiting, having some bowel issues, and will become lethargic once in a while. It seems that this happens one out every six or seven days. She is currently on a very small dosage of Prednisone, which has been helping to decrease the above problems, but not eliminating them.
I don't really like giving her the Prednisone since I have heard this can lead to other problems. Any other people ever had their pet on Prednisone before? Thanks!

Yes definitely predisone is risky to have a pet on long term... have you taken your cat to a specialist?
You've assume had all the bloodwork done and not turned up anything...
Could it be something in the household? (once a week is a weird interval).
My sister's cat is nuts and claws her own tail; she's been to 5 vets and on just about every med out there... they still can't fix her. Sometimes it's so frustrating because you just can't figure out what's wrong with your pet... and neither can the doctors who are supposed to know what they're doing!!

Yeah, we had every test run imaginable, including one where the results are only read one place in the country. They think it might have been some kind of weird bacterial problem in the intestines, but nothing was for certain. It's just so bizarre, she will be fine for several days, then one day, she'll just get sick and do nothing. Then the next week or so, she'll be fine again.
We honestly think it's some type of rare condition, but have no answers yet.

Good Idea for a thread!
I have actually been looking for a floor to ceiling cat tree. My folks bought one for their cat and i am looking for one.
Its like a post that suction cups from floor and the ceiling with different platforms for the cats to jump onto.
If anyone sees one IM me or PM me.
Thanks

I heard something on the news today, that really surprised me. They said onions, raisins, and grapes can kill dogs! Anyone know any other weird things that are bad for dogs?

One easy one is chocolate, which most people should know dogs cant have.
Another one people don't realize is certain plants you might have can be harmful or deadly. Rhododendron, Cherry blossoms, wild mushrooms, Tomato vines, Acorns from Oaks, Apple seeds all can hurt or kill your dog.
Here's a list of plants (http://www.ccndr.org/library/dangerous_plants.htm) Note the 2nd column. Some only have parts that are bad.
I had a Cairn Terrier who used to go bonkers for grapes, lived a normal life span. Never heard that one.

i was checkin around and this list had contents that were somewhat new to me. i've heard of alcohol and pennies but not the rest.
Mothballs, potpourri oils, coffee grounds, homemade play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergent, batteries, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, pennies and hand and foot warmers could be dangerous for your pet.

My dog got into the garbage the last week and had a feast of roast beef and ended up getting colitis. I'm terrified of her having anything but dog food at this point. She was awful looking, I didn't think she was going to make it ! We took her to the vet, $77 bucks, a shot, & meds later, followed by a diet of boiled chicken and white rice and she's back to normal. I had no idea what I was going to tell my daughter if the dog didn't make it, I can honestly say I was scared for the pup! She was bleeding from the butt and everything :(
She isn't spayed, yet, I'm like Papabear going back and forth on the issue. I know she needs to be but I don't want to take away from her spunky personality and she'll be a yr old next month. She's already been in heat and I'm kinda annoyed because she was just at the vet and I didn't know she should be on this heartguard stuff. So now I guess I have to schedule another appt to get her on this stuff, right TC?

One Easter, our dog ate one of those huge Judaeo Pagan Christian chocolate rabbit idols. One of the big ones. She ate the whole damn thing and most of the foil. Apparently the garbage chocolate that they use for our holy totems doesn't contain enough actual chocolate to be poisonous to the godless canine. With the bits of foil, her shit looked like someone just took a bite of the rabbit, chewed it up a little, and spit it out.

This doesn't really have anything to do with much of anything here, but all this talk about dogs eating reminded me of this.
When we first brought Buddy home, he had been exclusively and outdoor dog for the first 7 months of his life. His previous owners would swing a broom at him, if he even got on their porch. Poor Buddy was terrified to come near our door. I managed to get him into the garage, but we couldn't get him to come into the kitchen. I just decided to leave the kitchen door open while I went about cooking dinner.
After about a half hour, the smell of the catfish got to him, and he very timidly came into the kitchen. Little by little, we got him to explore the rest of the house. He's now a VERY happy indoor dog. And every time I cook catfish, he gets really excited and wants to play. He's still terrified of brooms, though.

I constantly buy my cat toys. All shapes and sizes. When I bring it home I hope that this will be the one that finally grabs his interest. Other then an initial 5 or 10 minutes of play he barely ever gives them a second glance. It has frustrated me to no end. So, what has he been playing with day and night for the past two days? A tiny, empty plastic bag that some spare Christmas lights came in. Fucking weirdo.

My cats never played with anything, until I bought them one of those big circle things with the ball in it. They love the fucking thing.
Oh, and the first time we had a professional cat sitter come over, she brought toys for them, and one of my cats still hasn't stopped playing with one of them a year later. Its just some dumb furry ball with legs on it.

I was just thinking about this thread earlier today. For the longest time, my dog has been eating Meaty Bone dog biscuits. He won't touch Milk Bones.

The past few weeks, he's been very unenthusiastic about them. I guess stuff gets old to dogs, too. Anyway... I went out and got Pedigree Marrobones.

Who's that little chatter box?
The one with pretty auburn locks?
Whom do you see?
It's Little Orphan Annie.
She and Sandy make a pair,
They never seem to have a care!
Cute little she,
It's Little Orphan Annie.
Bright eyes cheeks a healthy glow,
There's a store of healthiness handy.
Mite-size, always on the go,
If you want to know - "Arf", goes Sandy.
Always wears a sunny smile,
Now, wouldn't it be worth a while,
If you could be,
Like Little Orphan Annie?

Ah... Remember the good ol' days, when you could go to the grocery store and the butcher was happy to give you some bones for your dog? I went to Martin's (called Giant in the North) yesterday to get some bones for Buddy. They are now in the frozen meat cooler, and NOT free. Two big bones cost almost $5. It's not terribly expensive, but damn. Isn't anything free anymore?
BTW... I just started giving Buddy bones. In the past, he'd get no "people food" at all. Since he was neutered last year, he's gained 20 pounds. The vet said that chewing on a big soup bone is actually considered "exercise" for a dog. Now that I see the effort he puts into attacking that bone, I understand. HAPPY DOG!!!

This has me a bit worried (http://www.examiner.com/pets-in-chicago/specific-warning-about-chicken-jerky-pet-treats-from-fda).
This past Friday, FDA issued the latest cautionary warning to consumers regarding chicken jerky dog treat products imported from China. (Previous warnings went out in September 2007 and December 2008). FDA explained in its November 18 report that despite the number of complaints of illness from chicken jerky dog treats dropping late in 2009 and for most of 2010, the agency is once again seeing complaints at the levels that prompted the earlier published warnings. Therefore, FDA reminds consumers in this warning that chicken jerky products are intended to be fed occasionally in small quantities and should not be substituted for a balanced diet. Within the past couple of weeks, I got a large bag of chicken jerky treats from Costco. Buddy absolutely LOVES them. While I have never had a problem with anything I've purchased from Costco, and the reported numbers of problems is extremely low, I am still concerned. The bag is very clearly marked "from China".
Buddy doesn't show any of the warning signs at all. But I'm still confused about what they call "occasionally in small quantities" and "should not be substituted for a balanced diet". I give him two of these treats every day, as well as his regular food, and two Milkbones.
EDIT: Looking into it, it's probably no big deal with the ones I have. But still... I wish he didn't like them so much. Damn you, China!!! Where's FMJeff when you need him?

I wonder if it's how they dry these chicken strips? My dog loves them too. I've been getting the Blue Buffalo ones because they specifically say it's not from China. My dog loves them, but he also loves the Chinese made ones. I know I have given him the Chinese ones a few times a day, and I've given him the full sized pieces too. I think I will just buy the Blue Buffalo now instead, even though I have not seen any issue with the Chinese ones.

A little over a year ago we had to have our 16 year old Persian Cat put to sleep, at this point our other cat, just a plain ole tabby, had a complete change in personality, he became very social and also started begging for table scraps, we figured he felt like had moved up in the pack, either that or the older cat was keeping him under control. So about 3 weeks ago we had to have our 15 year old Lab put to sleep, now this cat has lost his fucking mind! He does whatever he wants, he will try and take food off your plate while you are eating, and if you walk away from your plate he will steal food while you are gone. The dog use to steal our grand kids food if we didn't keep an eye on him, but this fucker will take anyones food. And the things that use to run him off don't work, loud claps of our hands are ignored, and if you go at him he just hunkers down and makes you pick him up and remove him from the area of the food. He jumps onto kitchen counters at will, this has alway been a big no no and he never tried it until now. It's just amazing to me how much like a pack these pack animals consider a household, and how they try and make their move whenever a spot opens. Its also a bit insulting that this cat must have seen the Lab as the alpha, because he doesn't listen to us now.

I normally get my dog's flea and tick med from petmeds.com. I was going to order some K9 Advantix the other day. A six month supply goes for $70. My dad decided to check Costco. They have their own Kirkland version of the same medicine. A six month supply is $20! If you need this, get it right away. It's not in the normal pet section. It's on one of those temporary displays things. So I'm guessing it's not a permanent deal.
BTW... I was talking to my vet about petmeds.com. I've used them for years and never had a problem. But they told me, the reason they are so cheap is because they get European drugs and repackage them. Not necessarily a bad thing, but they said that a while back, petmeds packaged some shit wrong, and it killed a bunch of cats.

His tooth is fine for now. He's not acting like he's in a lot of pain or anything. We do have to have it removed though. He's very much enjoying the meds for his Lyme disease. I have to put the pills in hot dog pieces. He never gets "people food", so as far as he's concerned, medication time is a super cool bonus.
