At non self serve gas stations, do you spot the guy a couple of bucks for filling up your tank?

I've talked to a few people who work at such places and they say every once in a while people throw them some cash.

as others have said, it is illegal to pump your own gas in NJ. ALL gas stations are full serve only. i dont know why, but it is ANNOYOING. sometimes if you are in a hurry to get somewhere, i've had to wait for some slow lazy gas attendant to finally get to me to pump my gas, when i would have already been back on the road pumping it myself. so i dont usually tip cause i dont have the choice to pump myself.

but the gas is significantly cheaper there. when i lived in PA, i would go to jersey just to fill up my tank and save money

I tip the guy at my station cause he constitenly does the windows, oil and adds washer fluid to the car, so i always throw him between $1-5. If its someone just pumping the gas, no.

When I fill up the tank and it's an uneven amount like $23.76 I'll throw the guy 25 and say "keep the change."

If I'm getting an even amount like 20 bucks I'll throw the guy a buck.

I worked overnights at a station for about a month, that had one full service island. It was about 18 years ago. I'd clean the windshield and ask if they wanted me to check the oil. I think I got tipped twice.

You said "attendants". I don't know how the whole "Jersey thing" works. Do they do more than pump gas? Do they have a choice of whether they do more, or not?

It's only a joke, if "Full Service" is completely different than it was back in the day. Gas station employees used to do a lot more than they do now.

They fill up your tank and take your money. Sometimes when they are crowded I'll just do it myself instead of wasting my time as 1 guy tries to manage his time between 8 cars.

Maybe 1 out of every 12 months of filling up you'll have someone wash your windows.

I have never given a gas station employee a tip. Why would I? He's not a waitress making $2 an hour and working on tips he gets paid $10+ an hour. He isnt doing anything more then he suppose to be doing.

The Governor wanted to try to switch to self-serve but was shot down.

NJ rejects self-service gas stations (http://www.stateline.org/live/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=136&languageId=1&contentId=110510)

Bet you didn't know the gas attendants go through eight whole hours of training!

Eight hours of training is required of gas station attendants, Dressler said. Among their responsibilities are knowing which type of containers cannot store gasoline, such as glass. "It's a dangerous product and they are trained in the correct procedures," he said.

OMG some of the people's reasons in this article sound so stupid. My only problem with Jersey is when I am late for work and i need to get gas, there's either a line to wait in, or when i do get to the pump the attendant takes extremely long dealing with other cars. when i could have already pumped my own gas. very annoying.

When I had my car I never tipped. We just didn't grow up doing that so it never really occurred to me. They're not working for tips so I don't think it is necessary.
