<p>finally got myself XM connected yesterday. did the one year plan for now. have to admit it was a joy to hear the replay at midnight. it didn't seem as good as the old days though, i heard just a few callers and nothing too funny. i was also taken back a little by Ron and the F word. I remember&nbsp;the NY days where i&nbsp;would listen with my daughters and they were really getting into the show, thinkin about calling in, etc. now i think i would feel a little embarrassed listening while with my daughters.</p><p>there is something different about live radio than let's say a movie where people curse. live radio makes you feel you are sitting with the guys, much more personal.&nbsp; you can tell that cursing is sort of used as a crutch when nothing else funny comes to mind.&nbsp;&nbsp; fez doesn't curse or at least i didn't hear it and he sounded great</p><p>don't mean to sound like a prude, just how i felt.&nbsp; i always feel it's funnier saying What The F, and Sip the D, instead of actually saying the word....</p>

<p>R&amp;F still don't curse alot, I think Fezzie has really only done
it once or twice.&nbsp; They don't use it as a crutch, it's just
natural, conversational cursing.</p><p>Which unit did you end up getting?&nbsp;</p>

<p><br />That's really weird Papa, mine hasn't done that yet.&nbsp; Maybe there was a power surge?&nbsp; I always get the most recent recordings and it recycles the oldest recordings.</p><p>&nbsp;Also, is anyone else getting a lot more than the supposed 4-5 hours of recording time? also getting 8+ hours of recording on 202.&nbsp; The reason is that the
talk stations are encoded at a lower bitrate than the musc stations so
you're able to record more using the same amount of memory.&nbsp;

Is there a standard 1 Year warranty on the things?&nbsp; If so, I'd beat it up a bit until it was broken enough to warranty an &quot;Under Warranty&quot; repair.

The only ones that I know of that can record and be worn are the MyFi and that Pioneer that is mentioned in the link above. Mikeyboy posted, in the thread about people complaining about R&amp;F, that the MyFi can be purchased for around 80 bucks. I'd ask him about it.

<p>I like my Pioneer Airware alot, HOWEVER there is a glitch. When I record programs on the scheduler, I set the time/channel and turn the unit off. It records while the unit is powered down.&nbsp; When I return to listen to my programs, the unit goes to the end of the recording and plays the oldest section on the Airware. That's fine BUT when I hit the rewind button to hear what I just recorded, sometimes quite a few times if its a 3 or 4 hour program, the entire memory gets wiped when it's done too fast. </p><p>I'm womdering if anyone else can replicate this problem on the Airware?</p>

You can add a new radio online, but you have to talk to someone to remove the old one. When I called to remove one from my accoount (because I sold that unit to my boss), the people were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. They even gave me 2 free months of service on that radio, so we could wait until December for the transfer.

I actually did run the antenna out my hatchback and up on the roof.&nbsp; I had been wedging it between the glass and the defrost vents under my windshield.&nbsp; The second I put it on the roof I got absolutely NO static.&nbsp; I do still get a few dead zones out in the boonies, but a lot less now that the antenna is on the roof.

<p>Is there anyone else who has used both the MyFi and the Roady2? I find the radio signal on the Roady to be better than the MyFi. Not only do I get more interference with the MyFi, but it's signal gets &quot;trumped&quot; more often by other vehicles using radio signals.</p><p>I'll be driving down the road, and suddenly get someone else's country music, or even worse... the other day I got someones Disney movie (from their in-minivan DVD player). Sometimes, I get static that only goes away, if I hold my hand over the MyFi. Weird weird stuff, this new fangled technology can bring!</p>

<p>Let's get the CES news deluge started with the smallest satellite radio EVER:</p><p><img width="405" height="367" border="0" src="http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/XM-Passport.JPG" /></p><p>Yes, that is an actual XM receiver. The XM passport is the next generation of Connect and Play. Let me explain: Last year XM introduced the Connect and Play antennas. This was a cheap and easy way to integrate Xm into consumer electronics. So let's say you by a stereo receiver that is XM ready. Now all you have to do is buy an XM Connect and Play antenna, which contains it's own radio ID and satellite chipset. It was designed to allow electronics manufacturers to easily and cheaply make XM ready receivers.</p><p>The plot thickened when that Samsung unit was announced and it was to use Connect and Play technology. If using existing technology, you'd need to have a separate account for your home dock and car dock when using the samsung unit. Until this is released. That little chip is its own radio and slips into the Samsung and Pioneer units. So you will only need one account to use it wherever you want. Not terribly exciting, I'll admit, but for the tech heads out there I know you'll enjoy how far technology has progressed that XM radios have shrunk to the size of a flash memory card.<br /></p>

<p>Here are some details about the Samsung unit courtesy of Orbitcast:</p><p></p><p> The Samsung Helix features include:</p>

<ul><li> Live XM Satellite Radio on the go, in the car, or at home</li><li> Flash memory for MP3 files, WMA files, and XM content; Samsung Helix

can store up to 50 hours of XM programming.</li><li> Color display screen</li><li> Easy-to-use interface, which lets users save and delete content, create

personal playlists, and find and play back their favorite songs</li><li> XM + Napster feature that allows users to bookmark the names of songs

heard on XM, connect the Samsung Helix player to the PC, and purchase

the bookmarked tracks instantly from the XM + Napster online service.</li><li> The ability to store XM content by song, by channel, or by scheduled

session</li><li> Ability to create unique playlists with a mix of XM content and

personal music collection</li><li> Enhanced storage features, which allow more recording sessions at

various times, as well a memory buffer for &quot;catching&quot; the beginning of

a song</li><li> Customizable stock ticker and sports ticker</li><li> Category list for saving and accessing favorite channels</li><li> TuneSelect, which alerts the listener to a favorite artist or song

whenever it is played on any XM channel</li><li> Integrated, wireless FM transmitter for beaming XM to any FM radio

frequency.</li></ul><p> The Samsung Helix comes packaged with all of the accessories
needed for portable or home use. An optional car docking station is
available separately.</p><p>Quite frankly, I'm a bit disappointed. $400 and no car dock? This is as big a ripoff as the S50, even considering that it can receive a live signal. Including the home dock instead of the car dock like with the S50 makes a lot of sense, but when you have to lay down $400 for what is essentially a 1 GB flash MP3 player that can receive a satellite feed, you should be getting everything you need. Awesome product, horrible value.<br /></p>

That passport is close to what I have been wishing they would make for XM....a micro antenna. I have been envisioning an xm antenna and software packed onto a SD card. Such a device could then be used with any PDA out there. Imagine, taking your palm pilot or pocket pc and listening to live xm, and having the ability to record as well. They already make similar cards with FM antennae.<br />

<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">Just to clarify, you'll still need to use an antenna with the Passport (not a Connect and Play antenna, just a normal one). You probably already knew that, but just in case. Everything needed to decode the satellite signal and send out an audio signal is in that little card.</font></font></p><p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">And some more news on the Nexus. Unlike the Pioneer Inno and the Samsung Helix above, the Nexus is the Samsung unit previosuly mentioned in the thread. It can record the satellite signal while docked and play MP3s, but unlike those other two units it can't recieve a live satellite signal on its own. It also has a black and white display instead of a color. However, it will come much cheaper, with a 512MB version for $199 and a 1 GB version for $250. Each version comes with a home dock. This is a much better value than the Helix, Inno, or S50. It seems like functionality will be nearly the same as the Inno and Helix outside of live reception. Here's the XM page about these new products:</font></font> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.xmradio.com/ces2006/xmp3.jsp">Link here.</a><br /></p>

So, does the fact that XM is partnering with both Napster and Windows Media Player signal that the rumors of an eventual partnership between Apple and Sirius will turn out to be true? Looks like the next couple of years will be very interesting.&nbsp;

<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">Apple has said in the past it has no interest in satellite radio. And, no, I'm not just buying into O&amp;A's whole &quot;Sirius unit's are the size of buildings&quot; joke, look at how XM has fit their entire chipset into the size of the passport. Though I've had problems in the past, my Mify has been doing pretty good the past couple weeks (with the exception of some interference with the radio transmitter). One thing I've noticed (and this is probably not my radio, but the broadcast from XM)... during the midnight replays of R&amp;F, the screen reads Opie &amp; Anthony instead of R&amp;F. Very strange.

I have a Helix (sister to the Inno)&nbsp; Works greak at work.&nbsp; Must be the Repeters.&nbsp; You must have a car kit to play with fm transmission, and you must have an antenna if it is docked.&nbsp; I use it at work without a dock and it works great. My only complaint is Battery Time.<br />

<p>Picked up the Inno and gave my Tao to my brother. No repeaters up near my house, so the external antenna is a must unless I'm outside with unobstructed sky.</p><p>The power supply for the Roady is different from the Inno, thought the antennas (home and car kit) are the same. This was good as I have had the same antenna running hidden through my car since I had a roady. Just had to switch cradles and power. Same for the home kits.</p><p>Having had a Roady II, a Tao, and now the Inno, I am more than pleased with the Inno.</p><p>Loved the size of the display on the Roady, great for car use, but lacked a lot of info.</p><p>Tao was a good first gen portable, loved have the FM transmitter active all the time, but was frustrated by the recording features (no fast forward/rewind, couldn't selectively delete items) and the size was a little too big.</p><p>Inno is a geat size (smaller than a mid-gen Ipod), the mp3 playback is great, not to mention it handles low bit-rate podcasts as well, and user interface is decent as well, doing a lot more with fewer buttons.</p><p>I never used the presets on the Tao or Roady, instead just directly entering numbers. On the Inno, you save channels as favorites, then when you hit the right arrow, you get a list of the favorites, and depending on display choice, you can see which artist or song is on, so you can choose to jump or not. Browsing by channel or category is easier as well.</p><p>Management of recorded content (both satellite and mp3) is good and flexible.</p><p>My major problems, and I will qualify this by saying that these are far outweighed by the positives, are the following:</p><p>FM transmitter only works with the car cradle. Unlike the Tao, I can't just take the Inno into another car or use it with something like a clock radio unless they have an aux input. You can use the car cradle without power or antenna to enable the FM transmitter. I do hope they re-enable this feature in future updates. There are also ways to alter the home cradle, though this prevents scheduled recording unless you use a mod that involves a way to switch settings.</p><p>Display is a little small and sometimes too busy to quickly glance at in car while moving.</p><p>Recording feature grabs the data info from a different placed than the regular pad data, so R&amp;F and O&amp;A recorded stuff gets less than useful tags when recorded.</p>

Just go to FIND, then REC SESSION, then select the session (they're in date order) and select play. It will play all the tracks from the recording session, also in proper order. The only thing you may want to do is delete the commercials. Regardless of pad data, its pretty easy to spot commercials/breaks by their length. </p>

I have a question about recording the R & F midnight replays on the Inno.

When I go to play the show that I have recorded, sometimes the same segment of the show repeats a number of times. I am not sure why this happens, but it makes listening to the replay ...well... repetitive to say the least.

Help!

I have a Nexus, so I don't know how different they are.

Try hitting "all songs" when you start listening, because if you punch up the first segment, it will keep repeating. I know that has happened to me with music I've put on there.

This is a great thread, I'm looking into an Inno right now. I still have a MyFi, which I record the XM show on, and use Replay AV to catch the FM shows. One of the big reasons to make the switch would be to be able to load the mp3 versions of the FM shows onto the Inno and have everything in one place. Going through the user manual online, it says that the Inno can only take files ripped from CDs, or purchased through XM+Napster. Has anyone loaded other mp3s to the Inno, such as recorded FM shows, podcasts, anything random like that? Thanks.

The manual for the Nexus says the same thing, but you can copy things onto it like a thumb drive, and WinAMP is capable of managing it.

What is the difference betweeen an Inno and an Inno 2?

How do pre-sets work on these things? I have a dying SkyFi2 in my car right now and I like it because I can easily hit the preset buttons with out having to look down at the unit. Makes driving easier.

Fallon

I think Inno2 was just built with the home FM mod disabled.

Roritor
05-01-2007, 06:57 PM
Fallon is correct, I'm pretty sure, the only difference in the Inno2 is that the FM Mod is disabled, and you use the new SureConnect. Read up on that, you have to run another wire out of your car to the antenna. http://xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=70888 They say it fits with like 98% of cars on the road, but mine would have been one it didn't work with. A LOT of newer model cars don't have the right antenna. I went with the Inno. The FM Mod works well in the car cradle, with the XM antenna attached. I also used to play my MyFi on a home stereo, catching up on recorded R&F over the FM mod. The Inno doesn't work quite as well, but I can get it with just bringing the car cradle in the house with me and sitting the whole thing on top of the stereo's FM antenna.

As for the presets, there aren't any, just the favorites. They appear first as you scroll through the categories. You'd have to scroll up or down and hit the XM button to go to it. I was worried about what would be different between the MyFi and Inno, reading the user manual online helped me figure out the pros and cons. http://xmradio.com/pdf/hardware_support/pioneer/inno/userguide.pdf I'm very happy with the Inno, I record the XM shows, download the FM shows to it, and have R&F going all day.

Weird thing happened today: When I first got my Inno over a year ago, I set the tuneselect for a couple songs. I never got alerted, even when I saw one of those songs was playing. Today, I hear a beep coming from my radio, had no idea what it was. It wast an alert for one of the songs. Why did it start working all of a sudden? I haven't changed anything, still running 1.05 firmware.

ChimneyFish

I have no idea why that would happen. Wierd.
The first unit I bought was a boombox, and I didn't read the manual all that well, because I just wanted to hear O&A. Now the fuckin' thing beeps anytime the comedy channel comes back from a break, every time the soul station comes back from a XM jingle, etc. It's ridiculous. I haven't fixed it yet, because I don't listen to it much, and I have a Nexus.
If you haven't changed the firmware, I don't know why that would be happening.

Look into a car stereo with an aux input, FM modulators kinda blow. If you're hellbent on the radio you have and it doesn't have an aux in. Try disconnecting your cars antenna if you don't use Am/Fm

Yeah, that has to be annoying.

I'm getting alerts on a regular basis now. The only thing I can come up with is a day or two before this started happening, I got one of the "white screens" on power-up. I used to get them all the time, but this was the first time in months. Anyway, something might have reset then.

I have been using a myfi for the past 2 years, and this week my wife got me an inno for my birthday. I set up the recording for R&F and it works fine, but the pad data for commercials overtakes the R&F audio, and it doesn't split the show when the pad data changes. It will just be an hour long or so chunk of audio that is R&F, but says Quicken Loans, or some shit. Anyone else have this problem?

Fallon
05-31-2007, 05:36 PM
When you record the pad data doesn't change like when you're listening live. Most R&F shows will have between 2-4 long tracks of show and lots of 30 second commercial tracks (which you can delete w/ Napster or Innorg).

Reynolds
06-01-2007, 01:07 AM
On the Myfi, the pad data changed during the show. But with the Inno it doesn't, and the part of the recorded audio that is the show, has the pad data of a commercial. The first time I recorded with it, I went and deleted all the non R&F audio, and was left with just Best of clips, and the 10 second "You are listening to ron and fez on xm202"

actually it changes just like if you're listening live. the only thing is if you record overnight, the pad data doesn't change, so that's how it records. if you record noon-3 you'd pick up all the pad data. i HATE that they don't change the pad data overnight. pure laziness. like if you throw on top tracks it doesn't say "hour long block of rock music" just because it's the middle of the night, all the songs still have their own pad data. for the newer devices that can fast forward this may be no big deal, but if you're recording onto a myfi or such, you end up with a two hour long block that you can do nothing with but listen to straight thru.

end rant.

Yeah but the with the Inno you can tell it to play just a certain artist. Which would work great if the artist for all the R&F audio was titled R&F, but it's all titled as different commercials instead.

Just go by how long the track is. If its thirty seconds or a minute it's just a commercial. If it's a half hour to an hour it's the show.

Yeah, I understand all that and that's what I've been doing. My initial question was if everyone's Inno was doing the same thing, or if there was a firmware upgrade that fixed it, or if mine was screwed. Would be nice if it just worked properly and I could delete all the commercials beforehand.

This isn't really about equipment, but I didn't want to start a new thread about it. I was reading an XM radio Mypace Group thread, and the topic of the signal reaching Mexico came up. I posted that I heard the signal goes about 100 miles into Mexico (I either heard that on here or on the show. Not sure which).

Well... One guy said he thought it went much further. Another guy said he was "way south of Mexico right now" and he was getting a signal! I guess when people making statements about Ron & Fez (or rather, Ron Y Fez) being broadcast to two countries, it should actually be at least 3 countries!

assuming your just not getting a signal. bring up the antenna aiming screen under menues. and move the antenna around until you get the best signal strength.

Do any of you have any idea how hard it is to replace the PASSPORT for the Nexus 50?
Customer Service is NO help whatsoever. They not only have no idea of the product, but they have no idea if there is a replacement. So now that my children lost my passport, it's only a matter of time before the radio is useless.

I sit back and wonder if this really is an upgrade over the MyFi. I never had an issue with it, and would still be using it if my wife didn't give me the Nexus as a gift.

What customer support were you trying? If it was XM, try contacting Samsung.

what does the pass port do?
It's the actual receiver for some units. It's a little black square thing. If you move the radio from your home to your car, you have to take the passport with you. A pain in the ass, but allows for a much smaller radio.

I just thought of something else, Grendel...

You can get the Nexus 25 through MyRadioStore for free (after $50 rebate). You can use the Passport from that one on your Nexus 50, and you'll have an extra 25 laying around if you need it.

You will need to contact XM to change your passport number. If they try to charge you an activation fee, just bargain with them. You know... Threaten to cancel.

Does anyone have the skyfi3? And a 3 GB or greater MicroSD (Or is it miniSD) card?

I heard a rumor that the skyfi3 will work with a higher space SD card but I don't have one to test with. If it'd work with up to 4 GB that'd be great! 2 GB is just a little too small for me.

If I leave it docked in my car during the day, will it record R&F? Or, when docked, does the cars power have to be on for the unit to turn on and record?

Yes. Scheduled recordings won't start on battery. You'll have to go to your car at noon and start the recording. Unless that feature has been added since the original firmware.

hello all,

had to replace my old Roady XT with a new Roady XT. There was a 2 week or so lapse between radios, and my old FM frequency (88.5) was no longer viable for my XM reception.

I am currently on 88.9 FM but am experiencing very spotty reception and lots of FM/XM crossover. My usual XM listening occurs in my car and my commute takes me between Somerville, NJ to Paterson, NJ, via 78 Eastbound and up the GSP from MP 52 on 78E.

Any suggestions to improve XM reception? I've run up and down the band and can't seem to find a good FM frequency. I experience the most static in the area around Hillside and Maplewood NJ, where 78 meets the Parkway.

Thanks,

Madbiker

Basically it violated some FCC regulation. New Innos, or those updated, have the feature disabled at all times except then in the car kit cradle.

Thank god I never upgraded my firmware.

It sometimes seems, to me, like XM just wants to give up the fight and merge. Just so it can be put out of it's misery.
My NEXUS 50 stopped working. Out of the blue. I looked down after transferring MP3s to it and it was stuck on "SCANNING FILES". I waked away figuring it would take a second or two, and when I went back it was still that way. I tried to restart it and it stayed. Eventually I took the battery out and tried it that way and now it was just stuck on the SAMSUNG startup screen. Calling XM has proven once again to be an exercise in futility. The first rep I delt with ( after many transfers) said I should take it back to the BEST BUY where it was bought ( Over a year ago) and they would replace it. Now I don't know about all of you but that just seemed unlikely. When I told him that I was pretty positive that BEST BUY would tell me "no", he assured me that if they wouldn't provide me with a new radio, then XM would. Now this was something tat I wanted to make sure was written down and documented somewhere, and he told me yes that was something that the company would do. You can imagine the laughter I got at BEST BUY when I tried to exchange a defective radio more than a year after purchase. On top of it it turns out that XM does not make these radios any longer. So the new min-tuner and new car kit ( $40 and $70) I bought were now useless. I am into this radio for more money than I realised, and I can use none of it now.
Now comes the never ending line of phonecalls to XM. In one day I needed to call back 11 times. To make this oddessy shorter I will give you the upshot of it all. the rep I was NOW speaking to said that not only was that not XM policy, but there was nothing written in the account about me making ANY of the calls, from first to last. I work for Time Warner Cable, and when one of our boxes goes bad we go out and replace it. To no cost to the customer, after all the subscriber pays for the service not the equipment. Same principal right? No, no no. They kept trying to sell me a HELIX, but my point is that the radio had a defect in it and stopped working through no fault of mine. And I was promised a new one from XM. This kept going in circles like a Marx Brothers Routine, as I kept saying I wanted a new raido and they would agree. They would then say that the fault was theirs, and I would agree. Then they would offer me a radio and i would agree. Then they would tell me how much it was and there was the rub. Eventually I had to point out that I have 6 radios on my account and that as the primary account holder, if I couldn't listen to a radio then NO ONE was going to. So they ofered me a discount on my bill and I'm back to listening to my MYFI, which now that i look back, was really a superior radio anyway. Witht the exception of uploading your own MP3s there is nothing the NEXUS has over the MyFi. So here is a BIG FUCK YOU to XM and their shitty customer service. They should thank their lucky fucking stars for 202, because the rest of this god forsaken monetary sinkhole is just shit. :furious::wallbash:

Here's yet another XM Inno question. I've looked through this thread but haven't really found an answer yet.

Will the XM Inno start a scheduled recording while docked in a car if it is being powered? I was at a Best Buy playing with one recently and I couldn't get it to start a scheduled recording (I believe they had it in a car dock).

I currently use the Skyfi3 to record shows while I'm at work in my car, and then listen to them on my drives. Can I use the Inno for the same thing? The Skyfi3 just doens't seem to work right, it misses a lot of recordings or will randomly delete items or say "Unable to play" on recorded items. And it messes up if I switch through screens too much. So I'd like to see if the inno is a viable alternative.

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere yet, but here is a lot of info about the new XM Portable: XMp3

XMp3 features:

* Record up to 100 hours of XM radio
* Listen to MP3 and WMA files with the microSD card slot (microSD card sold separately)
* TFT display
* Manage your music and playlists with the XM2go music manager software
* One-touch recording for up to 10 hours
* Scheduling recording and automatic recording of favorite channels
* Record up to 5 channels simultaneously
* Includes home dock, power adapter, home antenna, RCA cable, USB cable, rechargeable battery, ear buds and remote
* Dimensions: 3-3/5" height x 2" width x 3/5" depth
* Weight: 3.2 oz.
* Price: $279.99

The device is manufactured by Pioneer, and the model number is GEX-XMP3.

UPDATE: I've updated the bullet points above to reflect the difference between recording XM audio, and storing digital audio. The MP3s can be stored on the microSD cards (not included, but 8Gb versions cost just over $20).

A source tells me that the XMp3 has 2Gb of internal storage space, dedicated for storing up to 100 hours of XM audio. And with the ablity to record 5 channels at once, you'll need every bit of it.

But the Sirius Starmate 5 is going to be coming out October 6th and that will be an A La Carte radio. The XMp3 will not be A La Carte from what I've read. But it will, along with all past, current, future radios be able to get the best of packages. And the Interoperable radios should start coming out May of 2009

Hacked Inno firmware (v2.11) with the FM Mod turned on. Download: http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/Inno_Firmware_with_FM.zip

Inno firmware instructions: Plug in to Inno while docked; Unzip and place file in root directory; then disconnect (safely)

NOTE: Installing the hacked Inno firmware may not work on Inno 2s - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

I did this to my inno and the only thing that it made different, aside from unlocking the FM Mod, was change the Pioneer screen to a Samsung Screen.

and here's a video of it in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FTuSf_tfKE

i read somewhere someone's inno is now dead, his problem seemed to be his inno was firmware 1.05. So if you do this be sure to upgrade to 2.11 first because the hack is a hacked 2.11

Ya - the site has been updated to say you should update to the 2.11 first to be safe, http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/inno-firmware-with-fm-modulator.html

As previouslt posted, it worked for me, but the FM signal it pushed out doesn't seem to be strong enough for my car stereo.. Any thoughts?

it needs to be in a dock or ac adapter or have headphones in it

it uses those as its FM antenna because the one inside it isn't very big compared to the older radios

Also make sure you have an Inno1 and not the Inno2, because the Inno2 doesn't have an FM antenna inside it. It uses sureconnect as its FM antenna.

You can check which you have:
1. Take battery and check the upper right corner to see what says
2. If you have the sureconnect boot thing in your car for FM radio
3. If it came in a red box when you bought it instead of a black box
