as of a few months ago all of verizon dsl's new wireless modem/router combo machines come pre-encrypted. The only way you can sign in to them is with a password on the machine.

If you have a wireless router, for God's sake, secure that bad boy. You don't want the FBI busting down your door to ask what those pics that were sent from your IP address were.
Right now, I have a wireless router running off my cable modem. Connected straight to my cable modem, speed checks (speakeasy.net ftw) show me getting download speed of about 9 mbps. (sometimes more, but it's always at least that.) If I then connect through the wireless, it drops to about 3-4 mbps, which is fine, but I want it faster, of course. Would one of those combo cable model/wireless router things do a better job?

i say "hack" it all. why pay for anything? Satellite is beaming into your backyard as I type, so i modified my receiver and viola! If they didn't want me to have it, they should'nt shoot beams at my house.

Cable internet is so poorly secured its rediculous. TNCiso makes a cable modem that can change its MAC Address, and this modem + basic cable subscription is all you need. A cable modem has a serial number and a MAC address. Comcast (or all the others) all use the same system. Your imediate neighborhood (say 200 homes) are all on a loop/node. I install modems all day long for Comcast and what should happen is when i plug the modem in, and connect to the internet it should lock me out, because Comcast doesn't have that modems MAC authorized for service. So i call them up and add that modem to the system and bam! it goes online. Now at least twice a week i unbox a modem connect it... and its already online. that means there is a duplicate mac address already in the system. Now Comcast has no way of knowing that, unless i call and tell them. Then they will tie that modems serial # and MAC address to that node to seperate it from the other(s). With the modem you get from TNCiso you just have to find a MAC address in your area that is authorized for service. I (hypothetically) go down to the mall, go to the comcast kiosk and use there complimentary internet. Google how to get to the diagnostic page on a cable modem (HTML page built into modem..its easy) or go to STAR>RUN>CMD.EXE do IPCONFIG /RELEASE

then do IPCONFIG / RENEW when it renews it will display the MAC address of the modem. write it down, go home and stick it on your modem. and the modem you get from TNCiso also allows you to set your Upstream and Downstream to whatever you want (don't be greedy. 100MBps is a bit much and will make everyone else on your loop run at about 56k while you DL porn at the speed of light.)

Thats what i would do...did....i mean do. hypothetically. cuz stealing is bad.
