Who would believe anything he says anymore? He always said he never bet on baseball. Then he said he did but not on his team. Now he says he bet on his team but always to win. Would anyone be surprised if 5 years from now he comes out and says he sometimes bet on his team to lose?

I just find it hard to believe that if the Reds lost 4 or 5 in a row, and he knows that the starter for the next game is their worst starter, he'd still bet on the Reds.
According to the Dowd report, he wasn't placing his bets with some off-shore book; he was putting his heat with real, authentic Mob dudes. You don't want to get too far behind with them.

As a little kid I grew up idolizing the Big Red Machine, mainly Pete Rose and Johnny Bench. As I've gotten older I can see that Pete Rose the ballplayer was something special indeed, but Pete Rose the man left a little bit to be desired.

That being said, I still believe his accomplishments as a player deserve the ultimate recognition. How can you not put this guy in the Hall of Fame?

I will use the tired old argument. OJ is still in the hall after killing two people(I know its a different sport), and Mickey Mantle was an alcoholic and owned casinos. Clearly its more than his out of the sport behavior. I believe Selig has a personl conflict with him bigger than the cheating.

Pete Rose was a great Player and Coach. There is going to be a lot of players in the hall who have done thing that are not right. Rose needs to be in the hall.

He was deserving of the hall before he began to manage. And since that is when he did this shit, I don't see how they can ignore his accomplishments. If he bet on his team while playing, I say no chance

Plenty of players did drugs and drank while playing are they in the hall. YES

I say this, because it is in the bilaws(spelling). Its posted in every locker room. If you bet on your sport you will be banned. If your banned while you are playing, no way should you go into the hall

Numbers alone, yes he should be in ... Does anyone have what the "rules" are for someone to get into the hall of fame?

What gets me is that he lied for what, 15 years, and then he thinks he can come clean and get in? If he said he did it like day 1, I think it would be a different story.

The comment earlier about OJ ... he killed people AFTER he was in the hall, so I personally don't think that would matter - but I'm sure the Canton is frowning everytime someone walks past his bust ...

Stop searching the pitchers for vaseline and jalepeno up the nose.

Because at that point, your own rules mean nothing to you. You can't let some time pass and change everything just because people don't feel as bad about what he did.

Fucking Prince Valiant looking retard. But the man could play. Too bad he thought he was above the rules.

Every time he opens his mouth you realize he's not contrite, and (to use a Catholic term) he has no intention to repent. He's still seen regularly in Vegas, who's he kidding?

And what, this is supposed to make things better? That he bet on his team to win every night? So he didn't blow out his bullpen once a week, he blew it out every night. It still affects him doing what is in the best interest of the team. Fuck him.

Fuck him.

And like I said in the MLB thread, I hate it when people try to shrug off how Rose blatantly and repeatedly broke the biggest rule in baseball for nearly a century by bringing up steroids. Baseballs changing views now don't magically erase the gambling rule. In fact, baseball went through something very similar with gambling...gambling was viewed as a "hidden vice" of baseball for many years before it was finally banned. We're seeing the same thing with steroids now...so just because people maybe got away with something before an officially ruling doesn't make it OK for them to do it after it's against the rules...it actually makes it worse since there's no question as to whether or not the player shouldn't be doing what they're doing.
