Recently on the Free FM show Ronnie mentioned toys that we grew up with the wouldnt fly with todays safety standards.

One that he mentioned was the creepy crwler maker. I had this toy where basiclly you are melting plastic into molds of spiders, centipededs and snakes. I had this "toy" and burnt myself constantly trying to see if my plastic spider mold has cooled yet.

Acording to these safety standards its a wonder some of us have even survived our childhood. Tonka trucks were made with sharp metal edges when I grew up- now they are plastic; kids have to wear helmits when riding bikes etc.

What other "dangerous" toys have you grown up with? Any good stories about injuries and what not?

For some reason my messed up mind thought this was going to be a sex toy thread and I needed to read it to stop me from buying bad equipment!

i think i posted this in another thread, but will repeat it. i had a toy pipe building set called PipeWorks when i was little, kindergarten i think was when i got it. these plastic pipes were about an two inches thick and ranged from 6 inches to about 3 feet in length. you could build just about anything with them they had interlocking joints of different angles. well my older brother of 3 years decided to make a pick axe out of them and smashed it over my head. i had to go to the hospital to get stitches. and it all happened when a baby sitter was watching us. she completely freaked out.

Any of those old transformers or Voltron toys were metal in my day and now they are plastic. My bro and I would smack each other with them and we would bruise and the toy would be ok. Now it would break with todays versions.

way back in the day my Dad had these trains he used to set up under the christmas tree, well I dont know if they still make certain types the way they used to. They were hard sharp and metal, on the ends, the area where the next piece would inter lock, and it would be almost a total circle at the end, almost reminded me of a big needle. So every year I would manage to cut myself, and one year I even accidentally had one jabbed into my bicep...still have that scar too.

Click clacks!!!!
My brother and I grew up with Tonka trucks that were made of steel with sharp edges.

I also remember that the Colonial Vipers from Battlestar Galactica used to shoot missiles. They were replaced with models that didn't shoot because some dumb-ass kid chocked to death on one of the missiles.

The worst toy related injury I ever received was at the hand of ...

wait for it

wait for it

A CABBAGE PATCH DOLL!!

I was 12 and my sister was 10. I guess she got sick of me picking on her, took the doll by the feet, walked up behind me, called my name ... I turned around and she swung the thing with all that she had. I was clocked in the face by that hard plastic head. She knocked me out and I bled all over the carpet. My father said it was quite a scene ... my mother screaming, me passed out bleeding, and my sister standing there smiling.

F_S stole my thunder with his story of playing with jars of mercury. Mine isn't nearly that extreme. I had several of these Quicksilver toys. They were these little plastic mazes with a little glob of mercury inside. You would tilt the maze to get the glob through it. I said I had several of them because I kept cracking them open to get the mercury out. I would push it across the floor or a table top and try to pick it up with my fingers. I was recently at the pharmacy to buy a thermometer for my kids and they don't even have mercury thermometers, for fear that kids will crack them open I guess.

When we talk about how pussified kid's toys are today and how hardcore our toys were they still don't compare to our parent's generation. I did a Google search for dangerous toys and look what kids were playing with in the 50s and 60s:

The smallest is "N" scale, with the next steps up being "HO" scale and O27. . .we also bought ourselves an "N" scale engine and train set, but that lasted about a day because we kept fighting about it.

Our Dad had the O27 trains as well. And when you ran them really fast, if they didn't skip the track, they might start sparking.

PIPEWORKS! Yes ofcourse!

I built all sorts of dangerous things out of these plumber's tubes. Yeah swords and wielding weapons were obvious and once I wore out the novelty of them I created more stunt type things. I built ramps and one time a set of wings which I placed on my skateboard and went down my sloped driveway with. The kind of stuff you'd see on Jackass Junior, just totally pointless, amateur stunt crap.

The worse thing about these was catching your skin in the crease of the pipes when you put them together. God that was painful.

Remember the plastic rockets you would use a water pump to launch? Those things flew! I remember my cousin pumping it up but he was leaning a little too close when it launched and BLAMO - right under the eye it hit him. His face was black and blue for weeks! Good times, good times.

It was something like this picture, but I remember you had to jab it into the ground. And it was red.

I remember them taking the original Battlestar Galactica toys -- or maybe it was Start Wars toys -- off the market when I was a kid, because some kid choked on one of the plastic bullets they shot out. They replaced them with lame red lights.

I remember the chemistry sets that they sold in the 70s. My neighbor had one, and if I remember right, they came with chemicals. I don't think they sell these anymore.
What toy first came to mind when I saw this topic was lawn darts. You threw them up into the air and tried to land them in a target. Well, a kid somewhere got hit by a descending dart and the metal part of the dart completely penetrated his skull. I'm not sure if the lawn darts are around anymore.

My old green and black bike. I've had toys that were potentially dangerous, but my bike actually fucked me up. There was like 3 years where i was just one big scab.
