Good for him.

I'd bet that 99% of the others only go to church to show their face to appease their constituents or make good of some support they got during a homily in October.

Although I completely believe him, for the district he represents, this would be equivalent to Hilary and Obama heading down south and donning those stupid, fake Uncle Tom accents. In that district, it would probably be a political blunder to admit to any type of Christian beleif.

Well having spewed out that completely pessimistic crap, let me now congratulate the guy for staking his territory.

Only 45 percent of Americans said they would vote for a "generally well-qualified" atheist, according to a February Gallup Poll, ranking them lowest on a list that included Mormons (72 percent), candidates on their third marriage (67 percent) and homosexuals (55 percent).
atleast we all have a common goal in keeping those mormons out of office

I actually don't know why there are any Unitarians. Unitarianism has always kind of struck me as a bullshit faith. It's like the religion for people who are too pussy to be atheists or agnostics so they feel like they have to believe in something.

One of my friends went to a Unitarian service once. They literally had one segment that was like a show and tell where someone brought out a seashell they got from their florida vacation and they talked about seeing the magic and wonder of God in its design. Sounded like the front of a damn hallmark greeting card.

That's part of the reason I think there aren't nearly as many Unitarians as there used to be. I can certainly understand and respect having strongly-held religious beliefs. But when your religion is that, it just seems like what's the fucking point?

They're not really about a faith, but about the "principles and purposes" of the unitarians, most notably "The inherent worth and dignity of every person". I think going to church for them is more about personal growth and social contact than worship. But I'm basing my opinion on four or five people, so that's probably painting with a very broad brush.

I'm both founder and member of the International Church of Badmonkey. We don't require our members to show up to services or anything like that. We mostly just want to be able to keep our mohawks blue for "religious reasons" without getting fired over it. We would also like a religious exemption from the new internet royalty rates. We don't want 10% of your income cuz we're not in it for the money, but we wouldn't object to some spare change so we can get some beer and maybe a pizza if ya got it.

You will never find a more honest religion than the International Church of Badmonkey.

Badmonkey

Why would an atheist or agnostic participate in government? They serve no higher good than themselves right? Maybe that explains your silly little question.
There's a lot of things I wish our politicians would be truthful about. Their religious beliefs aren't very high on that list for me.

isn't the whole point of doing good for your religion for your own personal gain: to get into heaven?

I don't think that this guy's beliefs should be a big deal. What amazes me is that he is the first member of Congress to openly have them.

An atheists and agnostics are selfless, because they do the right things not only because they know it is the right thing to do, but it also makes them feel good. There is no other agenda, no other ethos to please.
