what does TMZ stand for? This tabloid website came out of nowhere a few months ago and everytime a celeb news story breaks they mention its from TMZ. I started to think Fox News corp owned it b/c it seems like Fox News uses TMZ for everything now, but I cant find anything that put those 2 together.

From their website:

Named one of the year's 50 coolest websites by Time magazine, TMZ- a joint venture between Telepictures Productions and AOL- has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence by breaking the biggest stories in entertainment.

*****

'TMZ' stands for "Thirty Mile Zone," a term which originated in the 1960's. Due to the growth of 'on location' shoots, studios established a "thirty mile zone" to monitor the regulations of shooting throughout Hollywood. The zone was originally centered in Los Angeles around the old offices of The Association of Motion Pictures and Television Producers at Beverly and La Cienega Boulevards in California. It was often said that "Everything entertainment happens in the 'Thirty Mile Zone.'" So essentially, the "Thirty Mile Zone" represents the epicenter of Hollywood! Interesting, huh?
