View Full Version : How do they do it ?

All this talk about Daylight Saving Time and the problem that XM is having changing the clocks on their receivers got me to thinking.

How does my MyFi know what time it is ? I never set it. In fact there is no way to set it. Obviously the MyFi receives a signal from XM telling it what the time should be, but how does it know where in the country I am ? Do they use my zip code ? If so, what happens if I travel across country, does the time change on my MyFi ? If so, how does it know ?

someone figured out the technology to beam a sounds signal to a sattelite, then beam it back down to an antenna the size of a quarter no matter where you are in the country and your concern is the time.... good question, considering my inno time is wrong still

On the Myfi you can set the time zone in the if you go to set time and then set clock. But I think it automatically changed when I went to Vegas last tyear. Maybe it has diffrent beams for different areas.

And anyone living near the time zone dividing line might get overlapping signals.

Wait... problems updating the time? I haven't checked my myfi today. Does this mean I missed an hour of today's show?

Crap. I did. I'm confused. Should I try to get the first hour 3 minutes from now, or at 1am?

Ok, wait. I didn't mean 11pm. I think it recorded the last two hours of today's show. Does that mean the first hour will replay at midnigh, or at 1 am?

I decided to listen to the first hour online, then to be safe, I set tomorrow afternoon's recording to go from 11am to 3pm.

I thought about it some more over night and it seems like it isn't as involved as I originally thought. XM must be sending out ta signal telling all of the receivers the same time no matter where in the country they are. Then it is up to each individual listener to choose which time zone they are in, since that is about the only adjustment that we can make.

I guess if you are crossing time zone boundaries, it is up to you to make the change manually, just like you would adjust your watch when you travel.

I'd bet the farm XM receivers are passive. Receive only.
