Breaking News ---

The Halliburton Corporation is moving it's corporate headquarters to Dubai.

Link to story here.

This is an interesting move from many perspectives, but mainly two things that I can think of:

1. Taxation. For a corporation like Halliburton, which does the amount of business that they do, they are now moving their corporate tax base to another country. Do they expect to screw the US Government out of millions in tax revenue? And do they see this as a sign of the well drying up?

2. Litigation. With the corporate move, they will certainly be moving their corporate records and the corporate computers with them. My understanding is that Dubai does not have an extradition agreement with the US government. Does the Halliburton Corporation see some writing on the wall in terms of federal indictments and see getting out as a way to save their hide?

Very interesting.

Fucken sickening. It should be a no brainer. They are evading taxes and are now outsourcing our troop support to dubai. There is no reason to keep them working for our government. Hilary clinton shouldn't be the only one having to speak up, this is easily the most nonpartisan bs i've seen in a while..

As much as I like to take umbrage at corporate malfeasance, there may be less here than meets the eye. First off, the governmental services unit (KBR - Kellogg, Brown & Root) that is ripping off the taxpayer directly is being spun off as an independant corporation and will remain "American" (for now at least). Secondly, I think the only taxes they avoid paying in a deal like this is corporate income tax on foreign (non-US) earnings repatriated to the US. And there was a big one-time tax break for US corporations last year when they could bring "home" all the foreign earnings at the low, low rate of 5%, (A lot of corps took advantage of this which made the Administration's budget deficits look like they were improving), so there may not be much of a tax break for them left. Third, the business that they remain in, drilling and running oil rigs, is going to see a lot more work in the next few decades in southwest and, especially, central Asia. Halliburton probably sees a competitive advantage in not being too American when bidding for that work.

As the Great Ron Bennington has told us "It's a Corporate World"; this is just one more manifestation of that truth.
