View Full Version : Should We Stop Shaking Hands?

I know it's an important part of Western culture (one that the importance of has been embedded into every man since he was a boy) but I think it's time we let go of this ridiculous formality.

With the increase of viruses and bacteria in our world does it make much sense to grab the hand of someone you might barely know? How about the animals that always seem to have sweaty palms? It's disgusting!

I'm a salesman and my clientele are mechanics. I can't tell you how many times they've offered me a grease filled hand, and I've pretty much had no choice but to shake it. Then I have to run to my truck and grab the Windex and paper towels to clean up.

Another thing that annoys me is that the hand shake is supposed to be a friendly, respectful gesture but often winds up being some sort of childish, macho test of strength. If we really wanted to show respect for someone when meeting them, why would we offer a potentially disease-ridden hand for them to grab and then try to break their fingers? It's archaic and just plain stupid.

From now on I'm adopting the Eastern practice of bowing. What shows respect better than a bow? It's nice and clean too; no exchange of bodily fluids or germs.

Scoff all you want, but please don't become indignant the next time you see me and I bow politely instead of grabbing your meat paw that you probably just sneezed into.

I think the handshake may be what saves us as a society. With the advent of computers and the internet, we've become withdrawn from society. Am I wrong, or does it seem as though there are a lot more socially inept people now then say, 15 years ago? The handshake forces human contact. Without that initial contact we could head down a slippery slope towards social self-consciousness and withdrawal. Think about how repressed the Japanese are. Sure, the release from that repression may result in such artistic expression as anime and wuxai, but I think if we (the West as a culture) wish to stay on top of the world, the handshake is a necessity. Just stock up on purel.

I always wondered, is it ok to shake a females hand. I've always had women completely offended at this. I've never figured out the appropriate way to greet a girl of a friend or say a wife of a man or something. I always get a chuckle when i accidently try to shake her hand.

Shaking hands needs to happen for professional reasons, but I happen to agree with sailor...wipe your hand first and I forget who said it...I hate the limp wrist handshake. freaks me out. Also Sunny was right. ya dont offer your hand to a woman unless they do first. I didnt have a fancy nanny like others on here. Who knew Reilly was a fancy girl.

Right now I'm suffering from some mystery illness; it's like the flu with the added bonus of explosive diarrhea. I have no idea where I caught it, but I'm now more convinced than ever that it's time to eliminate all meaningless physical contact with other humans.

And people laugh at me for my compulsive hand washing.

I'm with GVAC on this one.
I'm in sales also, and its quite repulsive. I have never been the sissy-germophobe guy, but there is no reason to continue touching another guys hand.
I know where my hand has been, and I wouldn't shake it.

I'm into the fist bump lately--too many damn sick people around this time of year. I just got over that flu. I blame the guy at work who gives a shit when he's sick; he coughs without covering his mouth.
I am also for bringing back the hanky. Sneeze into a hanky ... not your bare hand.
I could do without handshakes

i like a handshake. my father is also in sales and he taught me the importance of a good handshake. says a lot about a person. stop being a pussy and get some germs. it only makes you stronger.

i absolutely hate it when i am forced into a handshake that if i dont take , it will look very disrespectfull. i dont want to touch people i dont know , and chances are , if im shaking your hand , i really dont know you . if i wanted to touch someone i would go ahead and do it , cause im THAT kind of person . . . :annoyed:
