My wife wants to move from Boston to NYC and we have several apartments available to us. However, I know nothing about NYC, location wise. Is there a "bad" area to Manhattan? Some of the places we're looking at are West End Ave, West 52nd St., 6th Ave, and East 40th St. Are any of these areas better than the others? Are any in "bad" areas? I figure there's a lot of New Yorkers here, and you might be able to actually help me make a decision.

Thanks.

I'm not used to streets making sense, as I live in Boston and its basically just a bunch of paved cow paths with no rhyme or reason to them.
Thats the Hells Kitchen neighborhood, one of the few areas left in Manhattan that gets a little sketchy in parts, but if its one of the new developments near the water (which it sounds like) it'll be very nice. Only trouble over there is its all pretty new, and there's not many places to shop. West End ave is all very nice, the other 2 I'll need more details about.
Here's how the #'s work in Manhattan. 5th ave runs thru the middle of much of Manhattan, so the #s start at zero there, going east and west. So if you have an address of 15 East 35th street, its very close to 5th av. If you have 510 52nd, you're all the way down toward the hudson river. #s dont go much higher than 500. Capisce?

Just more new construction.

And thanks for the info on the streets. It will be nice having streets that actually make some sort of sense.
