I was a little surprised when I read this story. I would thought Disney had to have had a Black princess by now. But they havent. Gee, I hope they do something really original like get Brandy or Beyonce to do the voice, instead of giving some talented unknown a shot.  But a Princess in New Orleans?  It'll be interesting if for no other reason than to see how they spin this story.

I'd like it if we'd get to the point where this kind of thing didn't have to be announced, either as a "good" or "bad" thing.  I understand that there's still a lot of catching up this country needs to do in terms of race relations, but it seems in instances like this, over-emphasizing the differences between us doesn't really do any good at all.The biggest race relations step I was most happy with was with this past baseball offseason.  Three black/hispanic managers, Felipe Alou, Dusty Baker and Frank Robinson were fired (amongst a number of other managers let go).  And nothing happened.  It wasn't a big deal...they were fired for being shitty managers.  I know it's a weird thing to be happy about, but it was so refreshing that they weren't "black managers"...they were just managers.I have no idea if that made any sense.

It's good to see a return to hand-drawn animation. The CGI stuff is OK, but lacks a certain warmness and soul that great hand-drawn animation has.

It's depressing that her voice for Elmyra is the basically the same she used since for black characters. In short, Cree Summer makes all black women sound like creepy white children.

I'll bet if there was ever a black female character in a Star Wars film, Cree Summer wouldn't get the part...but she'd still provide the voice.
