Nas is up there because with Illmatic he put out what I think is one of the few perfect albums out there in ANY genre, but beyond that his stuff's been mostly "just" good, and he has put out some real shit. He just doesn't really strike me as hungry and his reply tracks to other MC's calling him out are waaaaaaaaaay too weak for someone as talented as him. That lyrical war he had going with Jay-Z should have a spawned a whole album's worth of stone cold classic battle raps, but he couldn't/wouldn't step up except with a few attacks here and there in some pretty "meh" songs.

i was actually having this conversation today, if you listen to alot of old school and compare it to today, its kinda whack. listen to mona lisa or ladi dadi or white lines...its fucking ridiculous compared to alot of todays stuff.

thats why i say rakim was ahead of his time. i was never a huge fan in his heyday but listen to microphone fiend or know the ledge, if that shit came out today either would be on steady rotation. and i subtract points from jay z for this last album. it was a big disapointment. he wasnt kidding when he said he'd be back like jordan wearing the 4-5....if anyone paid attention jordan sucked when he came back with that number.

Guys like Eminem and Jay-Z really frustrate me because they clearly have monster talent as MC's, but it seems like they're willfully limiting themselves. Eminem's first 2 albums are awesome but he's been stuck on repeat since then..."I hate my wife, I hate my mom, I was poor and white, American blames me for everything"...repeat ad nauseum. And he's a HORRIBLE producer who thinks he can do better than Dre.

But when you write lyrics in hip-hop those lyrics are very reflective of who you are both past and present. You can't write about other people, you write about yourself and your life. What you saw in the streets, your past livin on the block, and what you've become, etc.......When you've got insane amounts of wealth, your life becomes very limited in terms of what you can say on wax. You can not theoretically rap about anything, as you put it. Jay-Z's albums definatly touch the topics of selling crack and being rich but that's far from all he says. To say that's all he talks about is really an injustice.

The best rappers CAN rap about "anything," and I think Jay-Z could if he wanted to.

i bet if B.I.G. were alive, you'd make the same argument about him. B.I.G. didn't live nearly long enough, it doesnt make his work less impressive, but it limits his life experiences in terms of what he could say. you can tell he's a different rapper on life after death then he was on ready to die.

True. But at the same time, Jay-Z's never managed anything even close to Ready to Die.

their isn't a rapper today who could hold a candel to B.I.G, he told a story in very vivid way. You could see everything he was speaking about he didn't make up his own words He had a very good vocabulary

I have another suggestion, he is not a traditional rapper per se but he has been referred to as Americas best non hip-hop lyricist by New Yorker and actually by a few hiphop magazines(source being one, and i think vibe mentioned him as well) is John Darnielle.

But going the traditional route, I am highly surprised no one has mentioned Saul Williams

I'm a big fan of KRS, Erik B and Rakim, Slick Rick and other pioneers of the rap game but I definitely wouldn't classify them as the "greatest" of all time since I don't think they're music really stands up to artists like Biggie and 2Pac and Jay-Z. I can't go back and listen to a KRS album the way I would listen to Reasonable Doubt or Ready to Die. It just doesn't hold up.

I think the sentimentalists who say that the early rappers were the greatest don't really get hip-hop any more and probably were never really fans to begin with. They just have more of a sense of history and are probably disgusted with everything on radio today.

I could be wrong, but i get into arguments about this with people all the time.

To me, despite the fact that I loved Biggie, I have to say that the greatest rapper of all time is 2pac. The guy was fucking brilliant. He made 10 times as many songs as Biggie. And he was a fantastic poet, song writer and musician. A close second would be Biggie.

Out all the rappers still alive/performing today, Jay-Z has to be the greatest. Album for album, he has delivered fantastic music. Reasonable Doubt one of the best rap albums in history. The Black Album, Blueprint and The Blueprint 2 were phenomenol. And I thoroughly enjoyed In My Lifetime Vol. 1, 2 and 3. I'll be the first to admit that Kingdom Come stunk. But 1 bad album out of 10 or 12 is not bad. Even the Roc-La-Familia album he did and the music to Streets is Watching is great. Hands down the best rapper alive and he may end up the best rapper ever.

After Jay-Z, I would add (in no particular order) Nas, Redman, Wu-Tang, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, Outkast, Big Pun, Beatnuts, Tribe, De La, EPMD. (By the way, Redman is an incredibly underrated artist. He never gets the respect he deserves).
