That article is so horribly written. Is it real? If it is, apparently they only put waterheads on the comic beat.

The point of the character is he's almost solely focused on his war on "crime." Nothing else really matters to him. That's what makes him the Punisher as opposed to every other twit in tights. The superhero stuff doesn't interest him at all. That world didn't kill his family.</p><p>I wouldn't buy him becoming Captain American for a second. And if you've read when Fury shows up in the MAX series, there's no way it would happen.</p>

<p>This is a lame attempt at publicity, should have just waited and made World War Hulk cool enough,</p><p>but as for the Punisher thing, they did sort of reference it in Civil War. Spiderman refers to the punisher as being just like Cap but in a different war. ????? Maybe they were alluding to something. </p>

It is an alternate universe, but there has been no story linking the creation of that universe to an event in the Marvel Prime (or 616 as Alan Moore called it) universe.</font></font></p><p><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font size="3">They've told some pretty damn good stories in that universe. I think the best Spider-man stories in the last 15-20 years have been told in the Ultimate Universe. Some of it is modern adaptions of Spidey's origin (he was bit by a genetically altered spider, not one that passed through radiation) and past Spidey stories (including an adaption of the Clone Saga that is a 100 times better than the original). Spidey is still in high school, his girl friend is Mary Jane (who knows his secret), and, Aunt May is around, but she isn't as old and frail as she originally was, and recently found out his secret.</font></font></p><p><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font size="3">They also have an Ultimate Avengers team called the Ultimates, that has provided the best super-team stories since the first 20 or so issues of the Authority. Ultimate Fantastic Four has been both good and bad, while Ultimate X-Men has been so-so.</font></font></p><p><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font size="3">The line has been so successful that DC has been doing a similar thing with "All-Star Superman" and "All-Star Batman and Robin" which try to pull the best of the Superman and Batman mythos over the years into a new continuity (All-Star Superman has been incredible, while I could only stomach two issues of All-Star Batman).</font></font></p>

<p>So basically Ultimate Universe is a suped up remake of past storylines? Blech. Even if they're well done, I don't care for that. Tho it is a pain in the ass to try to keep these characters young for 40+ years, so I can see why they'd turn back the clock and put the present day into it.</p>

Tho it is a pain in the ass to try to keep these characters young for 40+ years, so I can see why they'd turn back the clock and put the present day into it.</p><p><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="3">It's not just a suped up remake of past storylines. Some of it is, and a lot isn't. The Ultimates storylines haven't been a remake of any prior Avengers story. Ultimate Spider-man have told a number of stories that aren't related to prior Spidey stories. Some of it has been similar, but some of it superficially similar, with huge changes. The Clone Saga in the Ultimate Universe bears very, very few traits with the original.</font></p><p><font face="Arial" size="3">In other words, the stories are not just changing the original storylines to fit modern times. In many ways, it's telling stories that they can't tell anymore. For instance, in the main Marvel universe, they can't tell any more Spidey in high school stories, because he's an adult. Now they can in the Ultimate 'verse, and not just retreads, but some original thoughts and ideas. For instance, issue #13 of Ultimate Spider-man may be in the top 5 of my favorite one-shot stories of all time. It's when Peter tells Mary Jane his secret, and I think the whole issue was set in Peter's bedroom. Before this book, I've never read anything that captured as perfectly that junior high/high school moment between a boy and a girl sharing stories about their lives and realizing that they really like each other. There's nothing like that issue in the main universe. It's something completely new.</font></p><p><font face="Arial" size="3">I guess I'd compare the Utimate Universe to today's Battlestar Galactica. Galactia is based on the same premise as the original with many of the same characters and virtually the same origin, and some similar stories. But it is not just a suped up remake. It is its own being that surpasses the original by far. The Ultimate universe is similar - althought I don't think the Ultimate Universe suprasses the originals. However, they have told some really, really great stories. </font></p><p><font face="Arial" size="3">And similar to the Galactica, when it was first announced, fans couldn't stand the idea of the Utlimate Universe (some still can't). But many have come around and loved it.</font></p><span class="post_edited"></span>

Given the storyline going on in Captain America right now, I agree completely.
But it wouldn't be the first time a comic book company pulled something stupid out of their ass.
In the end, I love what Brubaker has done with the series, and trust he's going to make this good.

Per my last thought, Brubaker has said (http://comics.ign.com/articles/826/826576p1.html) that he doesn't think that Bucky wouldn't take the mantle:
When IGN spoke to Brubaker last month, we asked him about the possibility of Bucky becoming the new Captain America should the situation or possibility present itself. Here's what he had to say: "I don't think he would think he would be good enough to do it. .... So I don't think that would be something he would want to do or he would think he was worthy of. But that's interesting."

Per my last thought, Brubaker has said (http://comics.ign.com/articles/826/826576p1.html) that he doesn't think that Bucky wouldn't take the mantle:
Who are the other options? Maybe Hawkeye or the Falcon. Oooh, the Falcon would be a good choice. He already has the super serum in him.
For a while I thought it may be the Punisher, but I don't think Castle would be happy having to work within the law
And Brubaker might be my new favorite writer. He's blowing me away with the Iron Fist series

I haven't been reading Punisher War Journal, but it looks like the Punisher in that title changed his costume a little bit to incorporate some of the Cap Costume into the outfit.
BTW, here's another look at the new costume:

The early images show a white Cap, so I don't think it's Falcon.

There's nothing to suggest this new Cap is working within the law. But I don't think it will be the Punisher, given that Punisher War Journal is going forward as it was, with the Punisher back in his regular costume.

the way i see it why would they give it to some already established superhero ??
if you have a brand new guy or some second third or lower tier superhero that doesnt already have his own title out maybe then you move that established character into the role but otherwise you're killing one franchise to re start another one

I just wanted to add the following that was shown in the last issue of Captain America.
Essentially the end had Iron Man flying to a scene, and leaving behind a letter that said, from what could be seen:
"the worst is to happen, I'm trusting you to do two things: Don't let Bucky drift back into anger and confusion. He has a chance at a new life - help him find his way. Save him for me. And as for Captain America, the part of it that is bigger than me - that's always been bigger than me - Don't let it die, Tony.
America needs a Captain, maybe now more than ever, Don't let that dream die. Yours, Steve Rogers
I think that gives a pretty damn good clue as to who the next Cap will be.

The last point on this. The solicitation for Captain America #32 points to the fact that the Red Skull is not seeking to kill Bucky but to use him again as the Winter Soldier:
The Falcon and Black Widow hunt together! Can they save the Winter Soldier from becoming a tool of the Red Skull again? And if they do, will he just go kill Tony Stark? And what of Agent 13, Sharon Carter, who shot the final bullets into her true love, Steve Rogers, and has seen her life fall apart since then? Those answers, much action, and more! From the Eisner Award-Winning Best Writer Ed Brubaker and Fan-Favorite Artist Steve Epting, who brought you the biggest selling comic of the year!

Don't get me wrong - I like the new direction. A costume change makes complete sense and the new costume is really close to being cool. But IMO it needs a couple of tweaks to make it a great costume. And I mean minor tweaks.
Example:
I would make his boots red. The gloves are red, so why not the boots? It would provide more symmetry and carry the theme to the lower half of his body where it is lacking.
The point/V of the R/W/B make it look like the Cap portion is a big "hood" he just added. Make it look like the top is tucked into the pants and viola. The utility belt creates enough of a dividing line to make the point without creating an artificial division.
I think the metallic look also bugs me. It completely defeats the 'covert nature' of the rest of the costume.
This could be one of the gayest posts I have ever made. I am calling Tim Gunn right now...

Hello,
True, the writer might have a long term plan. The story line very good, But if the sales slip, if the story line takes too long and fan interest drops, Marvel will tell the writer, get rogers back. They did it to Pete David with the Hulk. I hope not. I hope Brubaker keeps his run going and they let him tell a story the way he plans.

I get my comics a week late. I used to live in NYC and went to a store there weekly. When I moved here, the store gave me a deal on shipping comics to me every week. Since I wasnt' familiiar with stores up here, and wanted to make sure I got the comics I wanted, I agreed.
So I get my comics about 5-7 days late, usually.

Yes. He apparently was dead, but they just revealed that Dr. Faustus had the guy, but he wasn't dead. Just badly injured.

I can't believe that a series could be this continuity-heavy yet read like a grown-up Mature Readers book. Brubaker is amazing.

Speaking as a guy who has a full sleeve of Cap/Red Skull/Bucky/Fury stuff I guess I'm a pretty big Cap fan. I really dug Brubaker up until about the start of the interminably long Man Who Stole America Arc. The bloom is off the rose for me. I think Cap is one of those characters that can't be changed out like a DC legacy. Steve Rogers is Cap like Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Any substitute will simply be a placeholder until the original comes back around.

I agree. I don't think we'll see Steve Rogers come back for several years, at the very earliest.
The current arc running in the series portrays how his past as the Winter Soldier is coming to haunt him as Captain America. Plus, there are several threads running from the Death of Captain America that would have to be dealt with before Bucky gives up the role.

All these twists and turns in the whole storyline make it difficult for the casual reader to know what's going on. I have seen this done a few times now and never can follow it. If I was a reader in the late 80's with the Captain America storys I read then, I remember he was Steve Rogers. Zoom ahead to the Ultimates, is this the same Steve Rogers as I read in the 80's?
So what happened, Steve Rogers got killed, and Captain America dies, and now Bucky is wearing Cap's suit? Did Bucky get the super soldier serum? I kind of remember a story where there was a different guy was Captain America and hed the memories of the original Captain implanted somehow? In the Ultimate X Men, Captain American recognizes Wolverine as being Jim Howlett from his days in WWII. Were these implanted memories, or was that the same Steve Rogers? Too many twists and turns.

Forget Ultimate Captain America. He and the rest of the Ultimate characters are in a parallel universe.
In the main story line, Steve found out that bucky was never killed but rather was found by the russians. The russians brainwashed him and turned him into an assassin. They would keep him in suspended animation when they didn't need him. Steve helped him out ad when Steve died, bucky became Cap. He does not have the super soldier serum but has a bionic arm. .

Yes. However, it also should be remembered that when the Soviets brainwashed him, they also gave him additional training to become an assassin (that they called the "Winter Soldier"). So while he's got no superpowers per se, he does have a number of fighting skills, etc. that he uses as Cap. In the end, he's probably not more different than Nightwing but with a bionic arm.

That kind of sucks. But it kind of depends on how the follow-up series goes and
where they go with Bucky. Will he stay Cap and Steve Rogers does his own thing for a while or will he immediately be Cap again? It is kind of annoying that they do all of the work to make Bucky a reasonable fill-in as Captain America then only give him a very limited tenure.

I don't hate Steve Rogers. In fact, I like him tremendously and have for many decades.
However, I am not a fan of temporary, bullshit changes that are made strictly for increased sales. And Marvel is notorious for this kind of crap. Well, not Marvel alone, but I would argue they are the most prominent purveyors.
If they were going to kill off Steve Rogers they should have made it more of a long-term thing. They can bring him back (just like they do 99% of Marvel's "dead" characters), but why so soon? Let things play out a little more.

Rogers has been gone around 2 years normal time and a little over a year Marvel time. And it seems Bucky has been Cap for only 4 months Marvel time. He really has only been Cap for about three actual stories. And to say not much is going on, isn't accurate.
And I think Bruce Wayne will be gone at least a year, but probably no more than two.

Green Lantern Rebirth had heat because there was a large group of fans who were upset when Hal turned evil. They campaigned for his return for years, even though Kyle Raynor stories were actually better. If DC has killed Hal off in a way similar to Barry (he saves the entire DC existance), you probably wouldn't have seen the passionate demand for Hal's return or Rebirth wouldn't have had the same heat.
As I said above, no one (or very few people) were calling for Barry's return. Fans were happy with how he went out, and were happy with Wally as Flash (though they may not have like the Flash kids developments). I think if you ask most Flash fans, they want to read more Wally stories than Barry stories.

years ago there was a comic book character (not marvel) called GrimJack. He would hang out at a bar called Munden's at the crossroads of the universe. He walked by a place that had three doors (for the three major comic labels at the time). He asked what that was about and someone said to him "oh that's for all the hero's and villans who died"
when he saw a revolving door he asked what that was about
"Oh...those are the the ones from the Marvel universe"

I think Johns definitely had this whole story planned out when rebirth came out.

hmm good question to ask though.

I saw an interview with Johns where he has said there is some Blackest Night in Rebirth if you look. I still don't like the whole "Hal wasn't in control" gimmick, but other than that I really like Johns' GL.
I recently picked up some of the Johns Flash trades from a few years ago. People have raved about them to me for years, and while I think it's good, it's not worthy of the constant praise. I still prefer Waid, whose Flash was so good, it got me to pick up four other books.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about everything by Johns that I've read. He's nowhere near being a bad writer, but I think he comes across as distinctly unremarkable. He's basically a very solid journeyman writer: he won't really rock the boat so the story won't suck, but it's never really anything all that memorable. He's basically the Ted Lilly of comic book writers.

To be fair, I'm really enjoying his Superman right now in addition to his GL.

You never know, they might have some super awesome story planned out for Barry too. After Hal came back it was a awhile before Sinestro Corps War took place, and everything between Rebirth and SCW was pretty insignificant in my opinion. I know Geoff is a huge Flash fan so I'd expect him to do the character right.

Maybe, but Flash Rebirth has not been anywhere near as good as GL Rebirth.

Marvel.com has a prelude to Captain America: Reborn (http://marvel.com/reborn/)online right now for free.
Not much to it. Not really anything we haven't seen before. Only one plot point of any importance and that's a small one.

Well what is the small plot point? I saw the offer for the prelude but I don't want to register. I don't think anyone would care if you spoiled the prelude.

Sin, the Red Skull's daughter, asks a H.A.M.M.E.R. agent "why do you think he's dead." The question gets to Norman Osborn who wonder if she meant the Red Skull or Captain America.
So Osborne is aware that there is a possibility that Steve Rogers is alive.

So what were people's thoughts about Reborn?
I liked it. Hitch is art was incredible again (although he does a little retcon with potrayal of Cap in WWII), they explained how Steve Rogers still lives (with some minor plotholes), and have set up Osborn's role in the story.
I think it's going to be pretty good.
Although again, I would have like to have seen Bucky remain as Cap for another year or so. That could still happen, but we'll see.

Actually, I was kind of disappointed about how Cap is still alive. I thought they could have come up with something a little more "plausible."
Hopefully it will be a little more clear and less hokie as the story progresses.

As probably every comic book reader knows, Steve Rogers is back from the dead. But after Seige, he won't be Captain America, as he's letting Bucky have the mantle.
However, Brubaker will be writing a series about Rogers called "Steve Rogers: Super Soldier" (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25776) that will feature Rogers as a covert agent. I think that he will also be in the Secret Avengers book.

I think this will be a temporary thing. Down the line they can do a Steve Rogers returns to become Captain America...and I am guessing when the movie comes out.
But will pick it up.
