I've sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay. It has definitely been worth it. Two things to keep in mind... Make sure you know what you're selling, so you can place a good ad, and be able to answer questions. Also make sure you take good pics. I've had things that sold for more than what other people got for the same items, because my pics were better.

Also... start with a few small things until you get the hang of it.

Do a little research before you sell items. Check if there are similar items and what they are selling for, if they are selling at all. Set your starting price low, but be prepared to let the item go for whatever price unless you set a reserve.

As far as pictures, sometimes you can "borrow" them from other auctions. If it's any item that doesn't require a picture of your specific item, you can find the "factory" pictures (guess you could call them that) and use those.

Don't spend a lot of money on extras. A standard listing with a thumbnail picture on the listing will usually get it done. Schedule the auction so that it begins and ends when most people will be computer accesible. Probably a work day, in the afternoon. That way, people who want to bid at the end won't forget because it ends at midnight on Saturday.

Get Paypal so people can pay you that way. It's way faster and easier than checks or money orders and will get you more bids. When you do sell something, keep in contact with the buyer and leave positive feedback if it was a smooth transaction.

I've had some success selling textbooks and nintendo games on there. Whenever I was hard up in grad school, it was a quick way to get some drinking money for the rest of the month.

Speaking of Ebay, Im cruising the site now, very stoned. I never had a dollhouse when I was a kid, (was NOT the doll type); but for some reason I am enamored by all these auctions...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Bakery-Dollhouse-SCRUMPTIOUS-Fruit-Cake-Tort-w-Boxes_W0QQitemZ180093613237QQihZ008QQcategoryZ2461 QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dollhouse-Miniature-Happy-Kitchen-Pumpkin-Blue-Pot-NEW_W0QQitemZ290091343614QQihZ019QQcategoryZ63649Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dollhouse-Miniature-Japanese-Mango-Seafood-Sake-Wine_W0QQitemZ290090283661QQihZ019QQcategoryZ47182 QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And it goes on and on....WHATS WRONG WITH ME.

The wierd thing is that there is hardly any Ron & Fez stuff for sale on ebay. Just some old Ron and Ron vhs tape. I was hoping to pick up Ron's ashtray that Fezzie got him for xmas or a BAC or something.

If your going to sell on e-bay don't waste your time with anything that might only bring in a couple bucks. Their fees have gotten pretty crazy so I try to only sell things I expect to get $50-100 for. Also don't talk in third person in your listings you'll freak people out.

She had an old Edison record player that she was going to give away. It ended up selling for $1500. She also had a German doll. It sold for around $900 to some woman in Australia. Avoid the over seas buyers, though. It's a real hassle.

I have sold many things on ebay. I sold my Linciln Navigator, My Caddy and my infiniti and it was easier then placing an add and having 50 people call, come look and not buy. As for other items, I usually sell things like cell phones when I'm going to buy a new one and stuff like that.

If your trying to start a business on ebay I think you missed the boat. The fees have gotten so high, you pay for listings even if an item doesnt sell. Too many people selling etc. I always do a no reserve auction. They seem to get more bids but I also do it b/c I want the item to sell. Good luck

Don't use PayPal, and don't do business with people in Texas...

I am paying for both of those right now as we speak.

I keep hearing all this "anti PayPal" stuff, but I don't get it. I've never had a problem. As for the "Texas thing"... My experiences w/ Texas have been weird, but not bad.

In addition to paying the eBay Final Value Fee, PayPal charges a fee of almost equally unfair percentage. I sold a $720 item last week, and $50 of it went straight to eBay ($27) and PayPal ($23). I'm not accepting PayPal on my next auction. I'd rather keep all the money I make.

In addition to that, the guy in Texas is giving me some serious shit about the condition of the item, which I assure you was pristine... Hopefully I will be able sort this out without any serious complications.

paypal is the easiest way to buy and sell on ebay IMO. Can someone please explain the Texas problem?

PayPal is great as a buyer. As a seller, they take out a percentage of your sale, which is totally gay, cuz you're already paying eBay for the FVF and just to list it. As far as Texas goes, the people are redneck liars... at least the one I'm dealing with. And hence, based on one person, I'm gonna apply it to the entire state.

I agree that the fee system for ebay sucks 3-5% goes to ebay then another 3% or so to paypal, but what else are you going to do? Take checks or money order? If you do that then you will have less action on your items b/c people do not want to have to mail out a check/money order, wait for you to get it, cash it, clear it and then send their items. Plus you run the risk of waiting to long to get the payment and bounced checks. Not to mention you still have to go to the bank to cash it.

I wish ebay had competition that was equal. I tired of all the yealry increases in all the fees, but like I said in a previous post I only sell stuff that I no longer use and that stuff would be collecting dust instead it help pay for the new item that replaces it.

I wouldn't say it's quite equal, in terms of auction traffic, but Amazon.com ain't no slouch either.
