Air Jordans in 5th grade. I mowed lawns for a month and a half just to get them cuz my parents would never spend $100 on a pair of shoes. Once I started to want nice clothes I realized that I would have to work to buy the clothes I wanted because my Dad was never going to budge on that issue.

I was a really shitty kid. Those Adidas Superstars bring back memories. When the originals came out I was in Junior High. I had to have a pair. Pleaded with the parents. They gave me the $$ to get them. A friend worked at a sporting goods store. He stole a pair...and I paid him half the value and pocketed the difference. Still wearing the Superstars. Just bought a pair with genuine imitation snakeskin stripes.

My parents refused to buy me Air Jordans when they were popular (like 3rd or 4th grade). But I don't know if anyone else remembers Regulators which were black (they only came in one color) and also inflated. They were also expensive although much less so than Air Jordans, and we were able to compromise on those.

I remember them only as an average shoe.

We had a grocery store, it was Finast and then became C-Town. They had them large cages that would hold the bouncy balls. Well they had a large cage with what looked like a million pair of "skips" in it. Not sure how old I was but my Dad made me buy a red pair with three black stripes down the side and I know I was crying the blues and embarrassed as all heck.

My fisrt pair of the 'cool' sneaks was Pro-Keds. I remember the label on the back of the heel and I believe a red and blue rubber stripe on the label with the name. From then on it was Converse and Pumas.

after years of begging my mother i got converse chuck taylor black high tops, $10 in the 8th grade, until then, cheap rip off sears "jeepers", looked like chucks until you saw the small black label on the rear heel. i was always walking backwards so nobody could see the jeepers label. in addition, big ass silver square buckled black belts and black wing tip shoes were happenin, too.

This is kind of strange, but I do not know where else to go. I went to a Catholic grade school, and had to wear the uniform and shoes, not sneakers. In the mid 70's, this new kind of shoe/sneaker came out and it was essentially a sneaker, that looked like a shoe. they may have called them casual shoes or something. They were brown and we were able to get away with wearing them and the teachers didnt notice then (before this, if you wore sneakers to school, you would get in trouble). I think Puma made them, but I am not 100% sure. Does this seem familar to anyone?

This discussion reminds me of something kind of interesting. Remember the checkerboard Vans that were popular in around '82. Well I was in D.C. and going to junior high at the time, and kids would take normal white sneakers and "checkerboard" them with ball-point pens. It was cool then. I guess there weren't Vans around.
Me, I always liked the Pumas.

My brother took them and got them sealed in a vaccuum type bag so that when he is older he will have an original pair of LeBrons sneakers while everyone else has newer shoes and he will be retro

My school was too cheap to pay for insurance for Football, so we played soccer. So when it was rainy, we practiced indoors. So I got a pair of Patricks and they were the best fitting sneaker ever.
I think this is what they looked like.
