ferris bueller was a cubs fan so they cant be all bad...... but, they overspent in the wrong area.... the last thing they needed was soriano, they gave up draft picks to the nats for him, and, they should of spent the money on zito, a pitcher who can stay healthy..... Lets Go Mets!

For years, Angelos used the Nats/potential franchise in DC as an excuse not to spend money, so he could "compete" (funny, cause he said there were "no real baseball fans in DC", so why would he have to compete?) Now he's being called out on the way he's run that franchise into the dirt...the fans LOATHE the guy more than they like the Orioles <p> </p>
The Phillies will win nothing and like it.

Look, its been twenty years since Met fans can be excited about a team. At least give me that.

They seemed better all around going into last season, than they do this season with such a questionable rotation. They still have a very good chance to win the division, but they seemed almost like a lock to do it going into the '06 season (that's when you factor in the fact that the Phillies can't seem to put it together for whatever reason). </p>

Last year I was very excited, but as a Met fan, you learn how to always doubt the team. This team improved its offense, and basically has the same pitching staff, with two big prospects with potential. Plus, it always exciting to know how cloose you were and want to see where it leads.

Cougar brings up a great point. They were in the Series 6 years ago. I mean, about the excitement of the preseason. In 2000 we had no expectations of being in the World Series. There is no other team in the NL that I fear. Omar will be looking for a few more pitchers before the deadline.

<p>I watched the game. It was better than his first appearance. It still sucked, but he improved. He had a little more velocity and he was getting his curve to break every so often as opposed to not at all before. He still has 4 more ST appearances to make and as long as he keeps improving a bit with each one, I'm fine with it. He's still on schedule and the Cubs have planned around him so, hey, anything good he does is cake. Wade Miller is looking good and, best of all, Angel Guzman, their best ready to go pitching prospect, is looking dynamite now (and during winter ball). Between him and Miller the #5 spot is covered. The Cubs aren't resting the team on his health again, so his performances aren't the deciding factor for how good or bad the team will be.</p><p>The only thing that bugs me about an average or crappy Prior is it means the Cubs can't trade Zambrano. That's pretty much my main reason for wanting a healthy Prior by May of this year.</p>

As far as Drew , the sox have a guy named Willy Mo who would step in just fine and maybe put up better numbers than Drew. </p>

What Rose did was declared officially against the rules before he was even born. It's not like they dropped this ruling on him out of nowhere and set some kind of new precedent. The steroids issue is murky because a lot of the things these guys might have taken weren't banned by the league until relatively recently. Gambling on the sport, as I said, was officially banned before Rose first stepped on a field. Who knew exactly what he couldn't do and blatantly did it anyways over and over and over again. The precedent had been set nearly 70 years before he was busted...he had plenty of time to figure it out.</p>

The thing is, anyone wringing their hands over a "payroll crunch" with the Cubs is completely guessing. The Cubs and the Tribune haven't said anything even remotely close to resembling a limit as to how much they're willing to spend. Something tells me that if they want to afford a player like ARod or Zambrano, they'll "find" the money.

<p>For Met's fans:</p><p><strong>The plan for Zambrano:</strong> Considering the way Victor Zambrano has been pitching, the Blue Jays are seriously thinking about utilizing him as a starter. That doesn't necessarily mean he's in the running for a spot in the rotation right away, though. </p><p>Arnsberg said Toronto might consider keeping Zambrano, who is 10 months removed from reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, in Dunedin for a month or so after Spring Training ends. That way, the pitcher could continue to build up his innings. Arnsberg added that the Jays also might try Zambrano in a few relief-type situations before the spring is over. </p><p>"I think the best thing for Victor would be to be in a starting role," Arnsberg said. "The best case scenario is that he stays in a starting role, where he gets his work days ... where you keep him rolling like we have this spring." </p><p>On Monday, Zambrano turned in four scoreless innings against the Yankees. For the spring, the 31-year-old pitcher has a 0.93 ERA in 9 2/3 innings over four appearances. </p><p> </p><p>They said he was hiding injuries, so is he ready to break out with the Jays? One can only hope. He's been really good and pitched 4 innings against some yankee starters today and gave up nothing again. I'm really liking the way he's come back and Toronto might be a perfect place for him. He might end up being a steal, along with Okha.</p>

Wasn't it the pitching coach and front office who made the move? I always have a problem when the player gets the blame for a bad move. I hate the Theodore move with the Avs, but realize it's Colorado's old GM that is truly to blame. Just a thought as it seems the guy tried to pitch through injury to make something happen with the Mets and risked his career in the process. Sure it'll go down as one hell of a terrible trade, but who is truly to blame? And could they have handled it any worse over time as well?</p>

Also, hitters adjust, older players take longer to get in shape and it's the time to try all your players and see how they stand up. </p>

I got my cheap seats coming via FedEx. I am 4th row right on the left field foul pole. I will be attending the last opening day ever at RFK Stadium. I sprung for field box seats first baseline for that one. I know the stadium is old and crickety, but gawd how I love that place. No Yankees down here this year but plenty of Mets, Phillies and Braves games to be seen. Not to mention the Cubs on July the 4th. Counting down to April 2nd at 1:30 EST. DAMMMMMITTT what is taking so long.

Picked mine up from UPS on Friday. Do you get the 8 half price midweek ticket vouchers with your package? I went down to the stadium on Saturday morning and got some tix for a White Sox game in August. Great seats too, considering how late it is to be buying them. All field level in the low 300's. Good foul ball seats.

Ohhhhhhhh, except it's not.
National sports media sucks. If these guys did their jobs, they'd realize this isn't some sudden shocking thing nor is it a huge deal disaster for the Cubs. Prior, after missing an entire year, has a slow spring. He's gotten better with each start. Wade Miller, however, has been better in his starts. Therefore, he gets the #5 slot. Prior is on pace to pitch in the bigs within 2-3 weeks of the season starting. He's having no health problems, and again, is getting better each outing.
He only pitched 3 innings today, but they pulled him at 60 pitches because there's no reason to press it already since sending him the minors has been all but announced for over a week now. 37 were strikes. He walked 2, gave up 2 hits and had 3 strikeouts. 3 runs were scored, but all 3 were unearned thanks to OF butcher Cliff Floyd (2 errors) and Soriano with a bad throw.
This is why they signed Lilly, Marquis and Miller. They're not scrambling to find green rookies to fill a spot. Prior hasn't had any setbacks this spring and should be starting in the bigs by the end of April, hopefully taking a job from that monster Marquis.
Best part about optinioning him is that the Cubs get him through 2008 due to his service time. YOINK!

As a Mets fan who sat and waited for Pulsipher,Wilson, and Izzy. I never get to excited on young arms. I know its different in the respect that the Mets guys never got going, but I didn't foolow the hype of Wood and Prior. Yes they have talent, but nothing is going to happen. Injuries never quite heal right for a pitcher.

Most pitchers have serious injuries during their careers. Most of them find a way back. Wood and Prior are two completely different cases. Wood is in his early 30's and has had bad mechanics his entire life. Prior has excellent mechanics and suffered two fluke accidents on the field. He fought back from both of those and pitched very well. There's a very good chance he'll do the same here. No, he might not be as dominant as he was before, but he can still be a very good to great pitcher.
The problem, though, is that Prior's problems may transcend injuries...I've read where a few people suspect because he's been so snake-bitten that it's messing up his psyche.
And if that's true, say hello to the next Rick Ankiel.

I agree. I and a lot of other people think that his slow start this year is in large part to his mentality. Nobody wants to get hurt, and for a guy who pitched so relatively flawlessly growing up, I think he kind of panics when he feels any kind of pain in relation to his pitching. Not to downplay the physical part of it...it definitely shows that he's working his strength back up...but more of his control for his filthier stuff I think is based more on him not willing to totally cut loose. That said, I'd be much more worried if he was showing he couldn't do it at all or wasn't getting better. Since he is improving with each start and each of his pitches are working at least some of the time, I feel pretty confident in the estimation that he'll be out there in about 3 weeks.

I've heard rumours for a long time that Prior was an HGH guy. Could this all be biting him in the arse.
I always loved the guy and thought his mechanics were incredible, but now I'm starting to wonder.

I've heard that before too, but it came from Jack McDowell who seemed just bitter in general. I think ol' Black Jack was a little pissed at how his career had fizzled.
I've never seen anything to suggest that Prior was on steroids and/or HGH. He just looks like another young pitcher with a lot of promise that was taken down by injuries. MLB history is littered with guys like him (e.g. Mark Fidrych, Brien Taylor, and the immortal Steve Dalkowski).

Mixed, honestly. Now I see why they opened the purse strings...with the team they have now, the Cubs are apparently valued around $600 million dollars.
If a Mark Cuban-type owner swoops in and gets them and is passionate about seeing this team win, this is awesome. The Tribune lacked that personal stake in team ownership that drives some of these owners to really try and put together a good team. That said, however, there are a lot of bad owners out there who ruin teams, and the Cubs are obviously very ruin-able. They still make a lot of money even when they're losing, so I'd hate to have someone a la Peter Angelos pick them up and slash payroll and just focus on making a profit first and quality baseball secondary at best.
This is gonna be verrrrrrrrrrry interesting.

It all depends on the buyer. A corporate group will be more interested in turning a profit, but the Cubs bring in enough revenue to have a big payroll and still make money.
If it's one rich guy (e.g. Arte Moreno, Steinbrenner, etc.), it's anyone's guess as to what will happen. You could wind up with a guy like Angelos that is clueless, yet holds up every single decision the team makes, or a more hands off owner that lets the GM build the team.
Unless they wind up with an Angelos-type owner, I think they'll be fine.

I just got home from Miller Park and let me say I don't know if the Dodgers are that bad or the Brewers are that good. Sheets was effective, throwing a 2-hitter on 106 pitches. And the offense was scoring at will.

But then you don't have Sportscenter on until 1am. Maybe they would normaly do that but with the title game tonight I think you want Sportscenter on before then.

Good to see the bullpen hold up, and t-bow not get rocked. I'm getting out my turnbow jersey to stay. Go Brew!

Turnbow looked great, even hitting the slider for a third strike to end the eighth. If Turnbow & Cordero are both throwing well that bullpen is gonna be amazing.

that just hurts.
Dammit, my Brewers lose 5-4. But I can't complain, they're 2-1, the Cardinals are 0-3 and the Cubs are coming to town.

It sucks, but the hits are coming and the pitching has been pretty strong. Not many teams have that much power in the middle infield, I hope jj hardy can keep it up.

If the Brewers pitching can stay healthy, the NL central is gonna be a knockdown-drag out between pretty much everyone except the Pirates.
Interesting article on the actual benefits, or lack thereof, from HGH use...

will we be racing to 85 wins or will it take 100 to clinch? by beating up on each other it could make the final win total lower.
