Hey!
So how's your boy Z? Heard he left with an injury of some sort.
BCB refers to Bleed Cubby Blue (http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/), which is a popular Cubs blog.
Looks like Zambrano had arm and leg cramps due to dehydration. Hopefully, he'll be fine. Ryan Dempster, on the other hand, suffers from being a crappy pitcher. There's no real cure for that.

Doesn't help that Lou screwed up huge. Dempster comes in when we have the lead. Wood should have pitched when Howry did and then Howry should have come out in the 9th. Then Lou bats Jacque Jones against a lefty in the bottom of the 9th with 2 on and no outs? Moronic.

Actually, they really don't. His numbers in save situations are pretty damn good. In non-save situations, like last night, they're kinda sucky. Piss-poor game management.

Sheffield concerned about right arm after another loss (http://mlive.live.advance.net/tigers/index.ssf/2007/08/athletics_3_tigers_2.html)
Something's just not right, and the Detroit Tigers could be facing a health concern that's more worrisome than Joel Zumaya's finger or Fernando Rodney's shoulder or Kenny Rogers' elbow or even Carlos Guillen's knee. More worrisome, certainly, than the eight-loss road trip that concluded with Wednesday's 3-2 defeat in Oakland.
Sheffield just doesn't feel right, and he's not sure what's wrong.
"I don't even want to think about the worst-case scenario,'' Sheffield said.
He had a cortisone shot in his right shoulder last week in Chicago. It was his second shot in five weeks, and he was counting on it to have the same effect that the first one did.
Instead, in the week since Sheffield returned to the Tiger lineup, he's 4-for-23 with no extra-base hits and no RBIs. He said Wednesday that his right arm and right hand feel numb, and that he doesn't feel like he can drive the ball.
"I just don't feel comfortable when I'm up there,'' Sheffield said. "When I want to fire, it's just not firing.''
The Tigers finally returned home after Wednesday's game, and Sheffield will visit a doctor either today or Friday. He can't have another cortisone shot, but he does hope to find out what's wrong with his arm.
"It's like it's numb,'' he said. "My grip. Everything. It's my whole right side.''
Sheffield came to the plate four times Wednesday. His first-inning fly ball died short of the warning track (he said it would have been a home run if healthy), he popped up in the sixth and struck out in the eighth, both times chasing off-speed pitches.
"He's cheating to get the bat going,'' manager Jim Leyland said. "That's why he's swinging at bad balls, because he's trying to get the bat going early (to compensate).''
This might help explain their recent woes, and if its serious he could be done for the year.

I guess Leyland is referring to The Clear right. Fuck Sheffield, he deserves to fall off the MLB map all together. I hear his arm isn't right bc it doesn't like being black. He's about to write a book about how his arm and Joe Torre hate black people.

I think they're a full game out, and Soriano is likely out for 2-4 weeks, but yeah, there they are.
I keep thinking I should be freaking out more over Soriano going down...but I'm not. His hits are incredibly streaky and he's really kinda sucked since the ASB, so it's not like he's been all that key to the team's great run. I just hope they wise up and start playing some of the young kids rotting in the minors or on the bench so creaky, powerless vets like Jones and Floyd get playing time.

I just turned on the Cards game, 7th inning, and fucking Rick Ankiel comes up to bat. My reaction, "Holy Shit.". Is this a joke? I never thought he'd be back. He's hit 32 hrs in AAA, but still. The team's history with this guy is fucked up, for those who don't know. He was a goog young pitcher that lost his mind and was then converted to an outfielder.
So what does he do? 3-run homer. Fucking amazing. I'm shocked. I guess his bat will carry the cards back to .500 and beyond. Here they come.

The fucking fan adoration of Ankiel is ridiculous. I listen to a lot of AM (KMOX) sports radio and fans have never quit calling in with the fucking "how is he doing" calls. I always figured he would disappear. Now this? Fucking stupid. They called him up before september. It reeks of desperation but with the Central being so weak, any energizing move can make a difference. One one hand it is embarassing, on the other they won today so fuck it.
oh yeah. They still have the garbage heap that is Kip Wells, so it is hit and miss. Although he has been good in his last two starts.

According to the Tribune (http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070817cubszambrano,1,3171337.story?coll=cs-home-headlines), it's $91.5 million. Not sure whether that's more or less than what they offered him before the season started. Can't remember seeing a figure, just that they were close to a deal, and then negotiations went on hold when the sale of the Tribune was announced.
This is probably the part that took so long...
The contract includes a complete no-trade clause and a possible sixth year at $19.5 million, depending on Zambrano's health and Cy Young ranking in the fifth year.

Rangers' 30 runs sets AL record in rout of Orioles (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=270822201)
After looking at the score, it's hard to believe the Orioles led this game 3-0 at one point. The Rangers' 30 runs sets a modern MLB record, surpassing the mark of 29 runs that were scored by the Red Sox (June 8, 1950) and White Sox (April 23, 1955). It's the second-most runs all-time as the Chicago Colts (now the Cubs) scored 36 against the Louisville Colonels on June 29, 1897.

For a second there I was thrown that the guy who finished pitching for the Rangers was actually credited with a save...then I looked it up and saw that as long as someone pitches the flast 3 full innings and his team wins, he gets the save, no matter what the win margin was.

Well, the Cubs are about to only be half a game ahead in 1st, which really isn't a huge deal since they've only been 2.5 ahead at the most (and that was for less than 24 hours), but I have absolutely zero faith that this team can do anything in the playoffs. Yes, I know, the Cardinals won it all last year looking like crap most of the season, but that's the exception and not the rule. The only reason they're in this is because the NL Central is so embarassingly bad and ultimately some retarded team has to win it. I'm just looking at who they'd likely face, the Padres, Diamondbacks and Mets, and their record is something like 7-14 against those teams.
In short, until they actually get somewhere, I have zero faith in this team. None.

Good ol' Cecil Cooper to the rescue! Actually Ben Sheets better throw better than that disaster on Friday!
I'm still stunned that the Cubs won that game. I was totally ready to go to bed happy.

I'm not buying anything until it happens, but this season is REALLY shaping up to be something special if...well, you know. All of these crazy wins and all the drama on and off the field. It would make a hell of a book or retrospective DVD.

Fuck. Why hang in for 14 innings if you are just going to roll over? I could have gone to bed but instead i listened to this asshole Cardinals team blow another close game. I know they're already out of it, but for fuck's sake, finish the season with a little dignity. I hope Kip Wells pulls a Josh Hancock. And i hope he has a couple of passengers with him. Mulder, Maroth, get in the fucking car. :furious:

OK, I think you're the only person in the world who thought Dunn caught that. Even the Reds' announcers said he trapped it.
Besides, even if he caught it, Theriot still tags and scores easily.
I really think that if Lou wises up and starts playing Geovany Soto as our regular catcher, offensively he'll be our Braun.

That just sucked to watch. It's just sad that a good guy like that with that much talent always gets hurt so much.
And Theriot would have been on 3rd because he had just stolen 2nd earlier in the AB.

Dude, as much as I want the Cubs to win, I really feel bad for you. What in God's name was Yost thinking taking out Braun in that double switch? I won't be shocked if he's fired if you guys don't make the playoffs.
I really just don't have anything against the Brewers. I know their in the same division, but they're still the new kids and there really just isn't any kind of rivalry except at this moment to make the post-season. It's not like I "hate" them like the Cubs actual rivals...the Mets, Cardinals and White Sox. Though I toss in the Astros...those fuckers have snuck in too many times to with their joke of a ballpark. I loathe them! But the Brewers, Reds and Pirates...I dunno, if they make the playoffs some year and the Cubs don't, I'd pull for them.

I feel pretty much the same way about the Brewers and Pirates. I kind of hate the Reds though.

Yost makes that move quite often actually. After Braun's last "normal at-bat" in the 7th or 8th inning, he lifts him and puts Counsell at 3rd. Braun isn't very good defensively at this point and truth be told I can think of 3 games that they lost because he screwed up in the field in the 8th or 9th inning.
There might be chatter of firing Ned, but when you deliver the first above .500 season & pennant race in 15 years...you probably aren't gonna fire the guy.

Santana's name being thrown around (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/09/30/giving_credit_where_its_due/?page=5)
Santana's name being thrown around
There's been lots of talk about the Dodgers needing to do something dramatic this offseason, and Johan Santana's name has popped up in a potential blockbuster, with the Dodgers perhaps sending prized prospects such as lefty Clayton Kershaw or outfielder Matt Kemp to the Twins. The big question is, will the Twins deal Santana now or try to win with him one more time? One AL executive theorized, "There are a few teams who could match up with the Twins. Would the Yankees deal Melky Cabrera and an Ian Kennedy for Santana? How about Boston? Would they send a Clay Buchholz and a Jacoby Ellsbury for him? The Mets? There are few teams who could handle the paycheck you'd have to give Santana and also be able to part with key prospects."
How great is this? Today is the last day of the regular season and there are FOUR teams alive and battling for the last 2 playoff spots in the National League.

I am absolutely loving every minute of this. Any of the AL teams can go all the way, and there's barely a favorite in the NL either. I think the Padres will be better in the postseason than they are in the regular season. One dominant starter in Peavey and an experienced Maddux for pivotal Game 3. Excellent setup men with Bell, Brocail and Cameron, Hoffman to close. With Peavey going twice I like them for 2 wins right off the bat in every series, so they just have to figure out how to win one more for the ALDS, 2 for the NLCS. D-Back will be very dangerous as well, but they're too young and those teams tend to make key mistakes in the playoffs.
Being a huge Yankee fan, I like the Yanks to get out of the AL. Not that they can't get picked off, they're not heavy favorites. But the match ups have broken perfectly for them to advance, and I think they are the best team in the AL by a slight margin.

Story (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/)
Walt Jocketty Dismissed
According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have apparently dismissed GM Walt Jocketty. Assistant GM John Mozeliak will step in for now and perhaps the future. We'll have some more thoughts on the move later tonight. My initial reaction is that if this helps mend the front office rift, it's a good thing
I guess all those rumors about him and LaRussa leaving are true after all. I'd imagine LaRussa will go pretty soon as well, they're known to be very close and its hard to imagine him staying.

Yeah, but then you thankfully picked up Jason Kendall and gave us a draft pick, and he'll be lucky if he throws out a single base stealer.

They did get a compensatory sandwich pick....but the Brewers give up nothing as Kendall is a class B free agent. He's only a stopgap until one of the young catchers is ready.
And with Kendall's arm (15%) throwing out runners, we actually double our chances over Estrada (7%)!
Is that depressing or what?

Why do you keep saying that Estrada threw out 7% last year? He threw out 11 of 84 which is 13%.
Actually he threw out 6 of 79 runners, which is 7.6%.

Kendall can no longer throw out runners at that rate. Trust me, I watched him with the Cubs last year. At the most he threw out one, and I doubt that he even got that. Runners basically stole at will on him.
