Whenever discussion turns to the greatest rock and roll band ever, the same names invariably come up: the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. I love those groups, but what about the good old US of A? Hell, we invented the art form!

So who's your pick? The Doors? Aerosmith? The Ramones? Nirvana? What about Elvis?

the DOORS........they were the first band to really test the bounds of authority, Jim's "antics' seem tame nowadays, but for their time period, noone had the balls or originality the doors had They planted the seeds for punk rock.

Aerosmith all the way !!! I was 5 years old when i first heard Dream on and have loved them ever since... ever read the autobiography? It's sick. I've seen them live 4 times in my 22 years and Steven Tyler was and always will be one of the most if the the most amazing stage presences of all time... and there still rocking... new albums actually pretty good.

I am having a hard time with this, I have to agree that the Jimi Hendrix experience may be the best.

The Beach Boys is definately up there (Pet Sounds was an unbelievable album)

Aerosmith, should be added to the list also, they have rocked out for a very long time now

I would even say Guns and Roses may be on that list also, however they weren't around that long. Appetite for Destruction is a perfect album however.

I guess argument can be made for alot of bands but, none had the impact of the bands like the Beatles, Zeppelin, and the Who. (With the exception of Hendrix)

I'll re-submit Bruce and E-Street on the following factors...

Every single Bruce album has had incredibly strong source material ranging over a variety of arrangements - from slow and somber on "Nebraska" to more upbeat stuff on "The River" and other albums.

NO BODY can pull of a live show with ZERO bells and whistles like Bruce can.

Hendrix experience doesn't have the catalog Springsteen has.

CCR doesn't have the longevity. Do you think CCR, if they got back together today, could sell out Arenas nationwide?

KISS runs close, but they are whores. Plus the Catalog simply isn't as good as Bruce's, IMHO. The music is great, but the songwriting sucks. It's all about Paul and Gene getting laid, which is great, but it gets repitive.

Guns n' Roses - three albums does not win a band title of "greatest american band ever".

Nirvana - don't get me started.

Aerosmith - OK, they have the longevity and the catalog to compete with Bruce. I've never seen Aerosmith live though... so I can't compare.

You can't honestly sit there and tell me that Hendrix's lyrics are stronger than Bruce's.

Granted, Hendrix is one of the best guitarists ever. However, we're speaking about the total package, not just the music. We're talking music, lyrics, stage prescence, concerts, etc.

Jimi did have stage prescence. The image of him lighting his guitar on fire will always be etched in rock fan's minds.

However, I still stand by my point that Springsteen's catalog, from "Greetings..." to "Tracks" is superior to Hendrix in all aspects, not just music.

ok, first off I will say I am not a Springstein fan, however I will try not to allow that to persuade me in debating why Hendrix was the better Band.

Granted, Hendrix is one of the best guitarists ever. However, we're speaking about the total package, not just the music. We're talking music, lyrics, stage prescence, concerts, etc
Yes, I completely agree
You can't honestly sit there and tell me that Hendrix's lyrics are stronger than Bruce's.
ok, with all that being siad, I will give that Bruce's lyrics are better (I don't agree, but it is such a small point I am willing to concede it. Also I believe there lyrics are different, I always thought of Jimi's lyric to be more poetic, while Bruce came off as a Story Teller, which makes them very hard to compare)

Live in concert, I don't know, never saw either of them, but lets say they are both great.

However, musiclly, Jimi Hendrix defined what Rock and Roll is today, and to this day artists try to mimic the sound Jimi created. Every guitar player wants to rip apart a song with the nastiest, fiercest guitar solo they possibly can, just like Jimi.

Out of your list of requirements that make the greatest American band, you left out impact of there music to Rock and Roll, which I believe is a HUGE part of it.

Every artist today will tell you the impact Jimi has on there music, the same cannot be said of Bruce.

Jimi Album's have consistantly ranked among the best ever made, with each album stretching further the imagination of what can be done on the guitar.

While Bruce created very good music, created a strong fan base, put on great concerts, his music has not made it to the legendary status that Hendrix has (along with others like Zeppilin and the Who)

This is not meant to discredit Bruce in any way, and I hope this does not come off as Bruce bashing, but when thinking of Greatest American Rock and Roll BAnd, I think of the one man who Revolutionized electric Guitar--- HENRDIX

i'm going ot put my vote in for The Doors. there is just something about the msuic and their songs that put you in a zone like no other band. Or maybe that's just because I've seen Apocalypse Now like 30 times but it's other songs than "The End" too.

After much deliberation, I've decided Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the greatest American band ever.

Before you scoff, take a look at the catalog; I've counted no less than 25 bona fide radio hits. Petty has quietly been producing some awesome music over the past quarter century, and so I've decided to crown him the King.
