The other night my friend and I were doing some drinking, and he was talking about how he was sending his kids to catholic school. I asked him why he would force his kids into that shit, after what we went through as kids (we grew up together in a catholic elementary school) I guess his religious beliefs were a little stronger than mine, because he got completely pissed off that I no longer believed in catholicism, and told him we would never see his dead grandfather again.

I told him that religion was just an easy answer to questions not yet answered by science. I told him that ancient religions prayed to gods of everything from pottery to the sea, and as science explained those things, we're now left with the only religions that have stories that answer the two questions science hasn't, afterlife, and creation. Now that science is beginning to figure out creation, and evolution, today's religions would be obsolete within the next 50 years. This totally pissed him off, to the point he barely talks to me. I told him I wasn't trying to change his mind, whatever gets him through the day and I wouldn't bring it up anymore. Damn and you think you'd know people after 20 years.

I completely know where you're at. I too was raised Catholic and no longer follow/practice/believe. But my wife went through a stretch a few years ago where she became very religious. Mind you, she doesn't go regularly but still tries to hold to all of the tenets (lent, ashes on ash Wednesday, etc). She has recently confided in me that she's not sure if she believes in evolution. Now I'm a scientist, and I know that evolution is only a theory (a fucking solid one, but still a theory), and I love my very very dearly, but for the rest of our life there will always be this gap between us, where I'll consider her uneducated, uninformed, dare I say wacky, for believing in creationism.

The best I can say is, never discuss religion with those you those you really love, because a lot of folks are very passionate about their faith. Some things you just have to accept as being different. Let's all enjoy our time here on Earth and it'll all get sorted out in the end.

mudeater, you are absolutely correct on all those points, and your friend isn't a true friend if he can't accept your views. There are plenty of us smart people who are wiling to hang, even more so knowing how smart you are.

I think someone with true faith, wouldn't even let the conversation bother them. I think the fact they find some it true, is what hurts, and is actually what they have the problem with.

Whether you have the same religious beliefs or not, you should call social services on him for sending his kids to catholic school

We are sending our kids to religious school, but religion has very little to do with it. The school has a very good reputation.

We sent our oldest son to the local school for 2 years and we go tired of him bringing home cute little drawings every other day and telling us about which video they watched. Even better were the stories our teenage daughter would tell us about the trouble makers in the class who didn't want to be there.

Since they have been enrolled in Catholic school, my sons have probably brought home a total of 4 drawings and from what I've heard they've watched a total of 2 videos. And best of all the boys absolutely love going to school.

Yes, they teach religion in the school, but it isn't the main emphasis. You don't have to be Catholic to go to the school, but you do have to attend the religion classes. And to tell you the truth, I think that a little structure and morality in my kids lives that doesn't come from my wife or myself is a good thing.

The best thing about it is that the kids in the school want to learn and if there are trouble makers, the school can say goodbye to them anytime they want.

I guess I think of it differently, I don't send my kids to religious school because I want them to get a religious education, I send them because I want them to be in a school that treats them as more than just the next kid being pushed through the system.

I agree, if the school system is bad in the area you live in, catholic school is a better choice for the kids.
