Doesn't surprise me. I was at one last night and was amazed at the lack of software. I went over to Best Buy and found the program I was looking for.

I saw this a few days ago, there's only one store in the DC area staying open, and its somewhere in Maryland. I have never been a fan of CompUSA (at least the one in Fairfax). The store was always filled with unhelpful, uninformed teenagers that would push extended warranties like their lives depended on it. And they never had what I was looking for when I went there. I won't miss them at all.

I never liked CompUSA for one reason: the smell. I've been in the CompUSAs in Edison, Freehold, and Princeton on a semi-regular basis, and there's always a stench of body odor and plastic which is just revolting. Plus, as a few have pointed out, the sales associates look like they are straight out of the Jimmy Fallon tech support sketch on SNL OR weigh 450 lbs and can't wear a polo and khakis correctly.

I'd always go in if I need a part desperately, but target, best buy, and staples have supplanted the need for parts. They always had a bigger selection than anywhere else and since I know what I'm doing and knew exactly what i was looking for when I went in there I rarely had to deal with the staff. I'll miss the place, even thought I do most of my shopping on the aforementioned Newegg anyway.

Maybe if they actually put a price tag on things or had good selections, and prices, or followed the Best Buy approach of moving away from rebate programs and instead to instant savings there would be a reason to shop there.

I was in the nassau park shopping cetner today in princeton,a nd there was a dude out in the cold annoucning an amazing clearance store closing sale at compusa, so i figured i'd check it out. The highest discount though was 20% and the majority were 5-10% , even at 20% off thier crazy prices, everything would be massively cheaper online. For a computer store, you think they would've seen the writing on the wall , or on the internet as it were, sooner. I used to go to the one in edison all the time, and the smell was pretty bad, which i attributed to the car factory across the street, which is also closed now too.

Circuit City should go, definitely. The quality of their stores have considerably degraded over the years. The one I go to used to actually have people working there so you could buy stuff without waiting 15 minutes for some dumbass to figure out how to work the crazy machine that processes fiscal transcations. Incidentally, a mustachioed shades-wearing N-E-W Earl was handing out WOW stickers in front of that store one cloudy day long ago. That should have been the big sign that the place was doomed to mediocrity.
Long live Best Buy.

As for CompUSA... I used to love them before their acquisition by the shit-tascular Hewlett Packard which forced CompUSA to sell only the shittest brand PCs to wipe your diarrhea-afflicted asshole with. Then I hated them, for selling aformentioned godawful pcs and I only went there when I needed to buy a cooling fan, mouse pad, or printer (the only things HP seems to be able to make without shitting the bed the past 10 years). So I was indifferent to them disappearing from anywhere remotely near anybody in Northern NJ (great demographic move by Slim, you fucktardaroni).
Now however? I miss them. Mainly because my computer as of late has been utter SHIT and FUCKSAROLE and I need to buy computer parts and learn computer maintenance and Best Buy's Geeksquad sucks my left nut. Circuit City and Best Buy both sell low-rent brand-name garbage computer components and last year's middlingly decent CPU hardware with a negative surplus in buying options.
For instance: I desperately need a new Power Supply Unit (PSU). I am as dumb as they come with computers. I've used them for at least 10% of my life, and I still couldn't tell you what a fucking Motherboard or CPU does. That's how knuckle-draggingly dumb I am. Somehow, I've still managed to score higher on my SATs than any of the "tech geeks" I've dealt with at Best Buy or Circuit City. While they probably were not much better, at least CompUSA had alot more CPU shit offered than fucking WALMART, Best Buy, and Circuit City combined. And sure, they were complete assholes who took 20 years to ring up your purchase at the registers, but those CompUSA guys had the haughty air and misanthropic tendencies that grace the social habits of people WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH COMPUTERS!!!!!!
So I get to learn how to use the World Wide Web aka Internetz to purchase my PSU from Mongolia...because apparently according to this one website, it's just the best thing since sliced cunt. Yeah. I miss my simpler days of strolling into a store and having a Red-Shirt sneer at me but still point me in the right direction. *Rant Over*

Flyer in the paper today for CompUSA reopenings, including the one in my area. Prices actually look competitive with online prices. If they can keep that up, actually might work out for them. AM2+ motherboard for $90, Phenom 9500+ for $190, 2gb 800mhz DDR2 memory $55 before $25 rebate. Cheap Sempron 2.2 ghz Sempron CPU with 180 gb HD, 1 gb ddr2 memory for 350, Celeron dual core 1.4 ghz , 1gb RAM for 500, not too shabby.
Also see unlocked cell phones, which I have never seen in retail stores before, would be nice to buy them knowing i had the warranty $40 - $200
ok this post is starting to sound like a commercial, but would be nice to have a computer parts store with internet prices, considering the hassles with returns/defective transactions online.

Yea, that is gay. I got a DOA hard drive from them once, they replaced it. Of course the downtime was bad but other than that I can't remember a bad experience with them.
Of course I understand how one really bad experience can turn you off to something for good. I also love having an actual place to bring a product back to, but there's no place worth a shit around me.
CompUSA around here blew...when they were doing the liquidation sale...the stuff at 50-60% off was still overpriced with the discount.
They marked up their shit so much, no wonder they went out of business. The only really beneficial thing about it was they had a bit wider selection and some computer parts that you'd otherwise have to order online.

I agree with you completely. The prices at CompUSA royally sucked - even on sale - but if you were in a hurry and needed a specific part, you had a pretty good shot at finding it there.
Then I found a MicroCenter retail store near me (relatively near anyway). Prices and selection are GREAT, so I never considered going to CompUSA again.

I didn't even find that part to be true. When I needed a small 40mm fan they had one, and it was the one that just broke. When I needed a new processor fan they only had 2 in store with the heatsink attached and all the heat sinks were for Pentium 4 set ups, nothing AMD.

Well, when the "computer stores" in your area are Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, or various office supply stores, CompUSA wasn't all that bad. When you needed something quickly anyway.
I would prefer ordering online or from a small computer repair place, but if you needed something immediately CompUSA was a good bet.
Again, until I found MicroCenter...

Same problem I ran in to...Best Buy sucks because they carry nothing. Circuit City's not horrible...a bit better selection, but still pretty limited.
But it just was rarely worth it to buy something at CompUSA because the stuff was so overpriced...most computer stuff I've needed in the last five years or so I've just bought online.
And forget about it if you're looking for video games or movies or anything.
