Be very careful with Limewire. I had it on my computer and I got lots of virus. I had enough virus protetion but I still got them. I loved it for getting stuff from there but The virus was the down side.

Since Limewire is P2P it's easier to track. I've heard there are a lot of fake files on there now too. I don't trust P2P stuff anymore.

Bit Torrent isn't fool proof but still fairly strong with "files" you may be looking for.

LimeWire's usefulness has been supplanted by Bit Torrent in every aspect in my opinion.

LimeWire was good in the day, but like has been said above there was always a chance that the file was corrupted or just outright malicious and the program was filled with spyware like most P2P. The recent RIAA filings seem to be all associated with programs like LimeWire

For whats its worth BT is alot more reliable and the selection is quite good and somewhat off the radar (i think)

I do let my daughter use Limewire on my old laptop for her music, but we never share out, and any files downloaded are manually checked for viruses before being opened. You must be very diligent about that. I watch her like a hawk when she's using the program. Also, as Mo said, there are alot of bogus files put in the system by the record companies themselves. It's best to avoid the ones with higher numbers and go down the list to the 2s and 3s in popularity. They usually are pretty safe and almost always seem to be legit.

Having said all that, I agree with Mo that Torrents are the way to go. You can get just about any file you want. I use UTorrent as opposed to Bit Torrent as I like the interface better. Once you've chosen your torrent engine there are several great sites to download the files from (BitTorrent, Torrent Spy, Torrent Reactor etc...) Torrents are well worth looking into.

i still like limewire for its ease and quickness, but yes the files of newer songs are corrupted often, the RIAA is gunning for p2p clients and it's terrible for porn.

im not sure that bit torrent is as off the radar as some may think. a while back i got a "cease and desist" letter and i think the files that sparked the letter were downloaded using bit torrent(files were NBC TV Shows The West Wing and The Office)

i remember hearing someplace that www.piratebay.org was trying to buy an island someplace...that would be cool

I've never really gotten into the bit torrent. Is there a program or site that's best for using it?

i love it with coronas

actually it's been a good thing for a good while. i've gotten most songs i've searched for. even very obscure songs from the 70's

the problem is the quality of a few and sometimes you don't get the whole tune and the last minute or so is cut off. the problem is sometimes i'll just burn it without listening first and that kind of sucks. especially the ones that go into that high screech, a bit tough on the ears...

I know that the P2P program Bearshare has a Bearshare Lite that is supposed to have less spyware and shit like that. Is there also a Limewire Lite kind of program? That one might be safer to install, but you'll still have all the problems with the fake programs.

Bit Torrent is harder to fuck with because it takes little bits or information from many different people who have the same file. So I guess in theory, someone couldn't put the wrong file in the system to use in the torrent system. I don't know that for sure but it seems there are more safeguards in place with torrents then P2P trasfers.

Easynews.com is newsgroup access with a searchable front end. It's got auto-unrar, auto-par, an amazing download manager, a picture browser, and 20GB per month. If you don't use your full 20GB it rolls over. I think mine is about 250GB this month. They have a massive connection to the net so downloads scream, and there are groups for everything you can think of, and you can come up with almost anything there. Ten bucks a month.

People will leave comments telling you if its a fake torrent or anything like that, so it really cuts down on the crappy files you get.

As soon as the FBI started busting people for downloading music for free I got rid of LimeWire.

Now I buy everything from iTunes.
