A City Council committee unanimously approved a citywide symbolic ban of the racial slur known as the "n" word Monday. "We're not looking to punish people, what we're trying to do is stimulate talk," said Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans), the principle sponsor of the proposal, after the Civil Rights subcommittee voted 5-0 to approve it. The full Council is expected to approve the measure on Wednesday. The ban, which does not carry the weight of law, is among several passed by lawmakers across the country. The lawmakers say they are disturbed by the casual use of the "n" word by young people, who argue that its use in music and movies, particularly when spelled with an "a" rather than an "er" has changed its meaning. "Here we are today having overcome so much and we find our children referring to each other colloquially by the worst possible word," said Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, who addressed the panel in support of the resolution. Other places that have adopted similar bans include Westchester County, Nyack, N.Y., and the New Jersey cities of Paterson and Irvington. Tim Gaylord, a subsitute teacher from Irvington, said the debate over whether the racial slur can be reclaimed isn't semantic. "The 'n' word is not just a word," Gaylord told the committee. I hear next week there's a ban on saying "spic" and "kike". Obiviously, "nigger" is an offensive word, but is this what we really want? I wouldn't be surprised if this council was all white. Of course this all stems back to slavery, but can't we just agree that it was fucked up and leave it at that? People in government feel guilty for being white. Why? You didn't own slaves, besides Africans owned African slaves, the Jews were used as slaves and so on.Another thing, why is "nigger" "the N word"? There are derogatory terms for Jews, Latinos, Asians, Italians, and generic whites, yet "kike" isn't "the k word".

In the Post today there is an article saying that as they were discussing to ban the "N" word, the "N" word was said almost 50 times during the discussion!  It must have been like a Mel Brooks movie in there.

So I was just listening to the BBC, they were reporting the ban, the anchor didn't even hesitate when he said "ban on the word nigger".  It just amazes me how Europeans are able to discuss subjects like this on a mature basis, and not waste everyones time pussyfooting around.

It's true that if they ban the "n word" they would have to start banning other racist terms... and then what would that do?? I think as far as some people are concerned who use the word regularly of that race might not find it as a way to improve their speech or attitudes towards eachother but a limitation as to what they can say and how they can talk.  It's really not about the "N word"... it's about ther meaning behind it and what it brings with it, I know but you can't just ban it. It won't erase those feelings and it won't stop people from saying it. If anything it might make people think they're tougher for still using it.
