So I got this new Linksys 5-port workgroup switch. It's GROOOOVY. It says I can transfer files from one of my comps to the other. My problem is, it doesn't say how. Anyone got any tips?

Much thanks.

i'm assuming you have two computers plugged into the switch, so you need to configure file-sharing on both boxes. if you're using windows xp, just run the network setup wizard. it should setup the "shared documents" folder on each system, and if you go to "My Network Places", you should be able to access the computers. That's the easiest thing.

Thanks, bro! Is the wizard somewhere in my control panel? Yes, btw... two comps with XP, and both plugged into the switch.

Posted after zentraed but his way is probably better.

Sorry for the redirect but here's a good place to start reading. Followed by this.
That's a good router. You should have no problems with it.

Depending on whether you are using XP or 98...things should be easy.

As long as both machines are running the same OS, the real shortcut is to just connect them all via the router and use Tools/Map Network Drive and then do a search from one computer to the other by Computer Name in Windows Explorer.

The way to find a given computers name is to right-click on My Computer on the desktop/Properties/Computer Name. Search between the connected comps for those names. Play, learn, explore, repeat.

Remember that there are inherent security issues. You have to allow one comp to see(share) the files/folders with the other comp and in so doing you have to be careful in how you do that seeing that there is the internet to contend with perhaps one of the comps.

I thought about the security issue, but I think I'll be OK. The comps are connected to the Workgroup switch, and there is a router between the modem and the switch. I'm only going to share the files long enough to move everything to my new comp, then I'll turn off the sharing.

The Wizard should be accessible in My Network Places, which is on the first level of the Start Menu. You can add the icon to your desktop in Display Properties, but I can't remember the exact tab. It's the one with the "Customize Desktop" button in it. I've switched to Vista and can't check an XP box right now.

Or set it to allow full access from the other ip.
