I keep seeing this commercial ... offering TV, Internet, and Phone as a package deal over fiber optics. The commercial mentions "real time" video.

Anyone using this? Considering this?

I opted for the 10mb package but, bandwidth tests reveal I’m doing about 1500k up 1800 down, which is pretty good. The service has been dead on and hasn’t dropped out once. They have JUST offered the TV service in my area, And from what I can tell its $10 cheaper than Cablevision and offers a few more channels. So….i’m definitely considering it.

Another cool thing about Fios is that free of charge they give u a combo modem/wireless router with 4 port hub. This is great because you don’t have to buy any additional hardware for wireless (in most cases). Cablevision only give u a crap model with one Ethernet out…useless.

If you have any specific questions about the install or the plans they offer give me a shout.

I got it two weeks ago. The DVR isn't as good as Cablevision's but I'm getting more into it.

I'm loving it.
My main complaint is the "500 channels" have a lot of repeat channels in there, not that I'd watch 500 channels. Fast internet. very clear tv signal.
And I didn't get their DVR, I got the HD box and use my old tivo to record shows.

I was suppose to have my installation today, but I pushed it up until the 20th. I am getting the free HDTV and the triple threat package.

Ive had Fios for about a year, the only issue I have is the Selection of HD sports channels, Currently I only have SNYHD, YESHD, ESPN/ESNP2HD and what ever sports they play on UHD and HDNet. Which isnt bad but very rarely do I get any NY Rangers Hockey games on HD. The only good thing is that they have been adding one HD channel per month/month-and a half.
Internet speed is great, I have the 20mb down/ 5mb up package and it really is incredible, and for TV and internet it was about 30-50 cheaper then comcast here in central jersey. Also the picture quality on the TV package compared to comcast is amazing, the clarity of fios is nuts.

The house we have under contract has FiOS. We had been considering this service but you can't get it in apartments.
Is it great? What do we have to look forward to? For the record I've only ever had Time Warner. No dishes. Is the price comprable to cable or is it really expensive?

Love FiOS.
I've have no problems with it in the 18 months or so since I got it.
Highly recommend.

Verizon is ATT's U-verse main competition. I actually like the Verizon plan better due to their customer service and tech know how. You will have faster internet speeds, more channel packages to choose from, and their telephone service is supposed to be good.
I'd highly recommend it versus ATT.

Yay! Sounds good so far. Hopefully it's not much higher than we're paying now. We already have Verizon for our phone but Time Warner for cable and internet. It seems pretty expensive. $15 a month for HBO.

I think the packages (of all three services; internet, TV, phone) starts at $100.

You and I both. Because I dumped Comcunt once they took over Time Warner here I have been stuck with ATT DSL. If Comcunt did not suck because of poor customer service, idiot techs, and piss poor billing then I'd still be with them and still have my 15 mbps line.

I've had it since November and overall it kicks ass. TV quality is fantastic (SD and HD), and the internet is always fast and I haven;t had ANY downtime yet (I have the 20/5 package).
The only issue I have is the shitty router/modem them make you use, I have the Actiontec and its pretty shitty if you run a lot of torrents. The NAT table on it is very small so if you load up a few torrents at the same time, you can slow down your whole connection. There was supposed to be a firmware patch rolled out to increase the table but it hasn't happened as of yet. Also thw woreless range sucks so I ended up piggybacking my WRT54 GL to it and I use that since the wireless rage on it is amazing. They've been rolling out Westell modem/routers in test markets with very positive reviews but they're not available in my area yet.
overall I'm getting better internet and TV service, the phone is the phone, it works, same options as Ive always had, etc., and I'm saving $60 a month compared to when I was with Time Warner.
The one think you need to do is be aware of when your contract expires. if you sign up today for whatever bundle they offer, and it's for say a year, when it comes close to the end of the contract you need to call them and see what kind of a deal they'll give you - otherwise your account will default everything to full price. Most times they'll keep your bundle package but anything you were getting free as a promo you'll have to pay for now.
When I signed up I went with the free Home Media DVR ($20 value) and at first I thought it was just a gimmick and I wouldn't care but after using it I can't see not having it anymore. Being able to watch anything I record on any of the TVs in the house rules.
Check out the VZ forums on DSLReports, they're very good reading for FIOS - good and bad

i had ordered comcast until the previous owner told us the the house was wired for FIOS.
called commucast and told them to fuck off.
<3 the fios.
another thing to think about...
fios customer service is open and friendly.
comcast customer service is behind 2" bulletproof glass.

We all agree, Fios rules !!!
Man Dies In Verizon Dispute - 6/18 - Just in. WMAL is reporting that a Vienna VA man died this morning after a dispute with a Verizon FIOS cable TV tech. A WTOPer tells DCRTV that the man, who was not satisfied with the job the FIOS installer did, tried to keep the Verizon employee from leaving by getting in front of the van. We're told that the resident then reached into the van to grab the steering wheel and died after falling to the ground. He was not run over, we're told. More soon.....

I had my appointment made. It even went as far as the tech coming out to the house. Then he started going over the details that the sales rep left out.
You need a box for each TV in the house at 5 bucks each per month. There was no guarantee that the internet would be faster, or even as fast as cable. And Verizon taxes the shit out of each service. Add all that up, plus a 2 year commitment whether you like it or not. That $100 was now near double.
Go scratch, Verizon!

Go scratch, Verizon!you dont need a box, you can also use a digital adapter which is $3 a month - you just wont have the guide or on demand channels on it. And I don't know what your sales rep was smoking but mine guaranteed that if I got 20/5 service, I would in fact receive 20/5 service (and I do). The taxes total around $20 or less.
I'm paying $60 less a month than I was with cable for more content and WAY better internet. Yes you lock in for a year or two but who switches providers that often for it to be an issue?

I hope none of you ever have to deal with a billing issue.
I'm on hour 3. They charged my bill of $505.67 (2 months cell, 1 month FIOS) twice, once on 2 different cards. You'd think it would be as easy as reversing the duplicate charge, but oh no, they want faxed documentation from me and the bank that I was charged... even though my online bill clearly shows TWO payments and a credit of $505.67.
I've been hung on on, transferred to an endless online chat loop, and have now been on hold to speak with a supervisor for 45 minutes. The attitude I have received has been unbelievable. Every single person I speak with tells me something different.
It also took me 2 months to get someone to finally activate call forwarding, and after 5 calls, I still don't have call assistant, even though I've been assured they're activating it.
I love the product, but the customer service is the worst I have EVER dealt with.

Missy's story is something that I feared when I dropped cable and switched to FiOS...
When I had DSL with Verizon, the one thing that bothered me about the service(and eventually the reason why I switched) was the HORRIBLE customer service.
It looks like nothing has changed...and I'm glad that I have AT&T for a cell phone provider.

I don't use auto billing, so they can't double or triple charge me. They only get the money I authorize at the time of payment.

I just pay the bill when it comes
I've read and heard a lot of bad things but the worst that has happened to me was they incorrectly billed me for a 3 month free promo of the movies package and I called them to correct it (they channels went away and I noticed the error on the bill) I couldn't get them back until Monday because noone is available for TV issues on the weekend.
Other than that it's been fine for me.

Fios internet isn't available in the area of my new place yet.
I've tried to look but can't find anything like a coverage map or estimated date for when coverage will be available in that area. Anyone know if this info is available somewhere online or would I have to ask a local service rep about it?
