I saw this list from the AV club and thought it would make a great ronfez.net discussion.
http://www.avclub.com/content/node/58411

The idea is to have a list (not ranked or all-inclusive) of pop songs that were known prior to a movie's release that gained notoriety as a result of their inclusion in a movie.

They list 15, but I think their one glaring omission is "Moving in Stereo" and Phoebe Cates scene in Fast Times. I think this is a perfect example because hearing just the first two bars of that song reminds any guy who has seen that movie about Phoebe and her red bikini. Fez might not get it.

The editors revealed some of their criteria after the publication date:
1. Don't repeat directors (this could have been a Crowe, Anderson, Tarrantino only list)
2. No classical music (i.e. 2001)
3. Song cannot be written for the movie ( i.e. Danger Zone)
4. Avoid good song/bad movie and bad song/good movie *some exceptions (*Sister Christian)
5. Song cannot be claimed for multiple movies (i.e."Walkin' On Sunshine" HIGH FIDELITYand AMERICAN PSYCHO)

THE LIST
1. Stealers Wheel, "Stuck In The Middle With You," Reservoir Dogs (1992)
2. Derek And The Dominos, "Layla," Goodfellas (1990)
3. The Mamas And The Papas, "California Dreamin'," Chungking Express (1994)
4. Screamin' Jay Hawkins, "I Put A Spell On You," Stranger Than Paradise (1984)
5. Iggy Pop, "Lust For Life," Trainspotting, (1996)
6. Iron Butterfly, "In A Gadda Da Vida," Manhunter (1986)
7. Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra, "Some Velvet Morning," Morvern Callar (2002)
8. Night Ranger, "Sister Christian," and Rick Springfield, "Jesse's Girl," Boogie Nights (1997)
9. The Faces, "Ooh La La," Rushmore (1998)
10. The Hollies, "King Midas In Reverse," The Limey (1999)
11. Pixies, "Where Is My Mind," Fight Club (1999)
12. The Doors, "The End," Apocalypse Now, (1979)
13. Aerosmith, "Sweet Emotion," Dazed & Confused (1993)
14. Foreigner, "I Want To Know What Love Is," Show Me Love (1998)
15. Elton John, "Tiny Dancer," Almost Famous (2000)
How about the Ben E. King version of Stand by Me from "Stand by Me." It was a hit all over again after the movie came out.

"Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson from "Good Fellas" would have been a better choice than "Layla". I defy you to listen to this song and NOT see Henry driving like a maniac looking up in the sky for the helicopters following him.

I don't think it quite fits the criteria for the list, but the scene with "Army of Me" by Bjork in Tank Girl is one of the best marriages of movie and music i've ever seen. Anyone who has seen Tank Girl feel free to agree or disagree...
