Everybody ready for this? Ash Wednesday, I mean. I was born and raised Catholic but I can honestly say that I have NEVER gotten the ashes. I think it stems from the fact that I'm a neat freak. I always found some excuse to avoid it. Anyone here getting it?

I always like to people watch on Ash Wednesday and try to keep a straight face. It's always funny when you see someone who the priest really went to town on and smeared their whole forehead black.

I used to do it when I was younger. I would always laugh when I saw a hundred people walkin around with ashes on their forehead.

I'm not the least bit Catholic. I had no idea what Ash Wednesday was all about, until a wired (for me) experience in Pittsburgh, Pa, about 20 years ago. I was sitting in the middle of PPG square, and I saw all these "normal" looking people walking around with the ash smudge on their foreheads.

Keep in mind... I had watched Krishnas dancing around the square on a daily basis. Until I learned what the whole ash thing was about, the Krishnas looked a little bit more normal to me.

I'm not trying to be inflammatory here but:

If this was any other religion, wouldn't this look really fucking weird to people outside of it? It's like some strange pagan ritual. I swear I forget every year and it weirds me out when I remember that this is normal.

Just about everything about it would look weird/crazy to an outsider if it wasn't categorized as "faith".
