Even live, most drum solos [and guitar solos, and bass solos, and especially keyboard solos] are Lame, IMHO.

'Ooohh wow check him out, he's all technical...' Enough! It's almost always wasted concert time.

Even the God-Like Neil Peart, who I've seen live since Moving Pictures, never really had a solo that's as good as his breaks in say Tom Sawyer or Freewill. And whoever mentioned 'Fool In The Rain' by Bonzo/Led Zep? Wonderful perfect example of masterful playing inside a track.

I'd rather hear really cool drumming that's part of a musical group then a solo.

The '100,000 Years' solo is funny for me in that my friend is such a KISS head he does the whole friggin thing on a counter/chair/whatever, including everything Paul says, from memory, whenever he gets a few beers in him. Hysterical.

I like Brufords stuff; but again, in a song.

I have a neighbor whose teen son is into some kind of noise called drum solos. I hear him blasting it from his car, and the so called drumming cracks me up. Is it a gay thing? I never see him hanging with any chicks? Can comeone please tell me what's the story with this awful noise?

That is exactly how I feel about solos too. That's the other part of it. Lots of guys are techincal and good musicians, but what is impressive is a band, playing well as a unit, making my head move.

=

Bingo !!!

Perfect example: Mike Portnoy of Dream Theatre. Now I caught them live early on 'Images and Words' tour and they blew me away, Mike especially. This guy can hit it; like a slightly looser Peart.

And then they devolve from making some good music into this math-rock 40 minute long epic song opus with multiple parts unlistenable Crap.

Being technical for technicals sake = death to music.

Al Franken would once a year, throw it to England via satellite for "The Queen's Annual Drum Solo". They'd have someone there covering it for the show....usually Nigel Chesney who sounded oddly like Franken with a British accent. Maybe they were related. The solo went on and on. Presumably the old woman really has stamina. Chesney would chime in during the show and comment on how she was "working the toms" or "popping the pedal" as she played in the background. Very entertaining. I'll go with The Queen's annual drum solo as my favorite.

I agree with the thinking that recorded drum solo's do not have the impact of a LIVE solo... and even better is a SOLID drummer who can add some sweet fills into a song or some off time stuff just to change the dynamic a little but then bring it all back together with the band... that's when you can electrify an audience. My favorite drummers:

Keith Moon-the Who, Raymond Herrera- Fear Factory, Tre Cool- Green Day, Jamie Miller- Snot

There was this cat, Buddy Rich that used to be on Carson's TONIGHT SHOW playing drums when I was a kid. Like that wasn't the only reason he'd be on either. He also had a wicked sense of humor. And he was cool in every sense of the word. Supposedly the best jazz drummer of all time.

the thing about drum solos that never made sense to me is that it just seems to be a time for the rest of the band to take a break and go drink a beer or something back stage for five minutes.

but the drummer is definitely working the hardest out of anyone.

that doesn't seem fair to me.
