View Full Version : Heart Attacks?

Occasionally I'll have really sharp pains in my heart that last anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. They usually make me stop whatever I'm doing and it always hurts more when I inhale. I can't fuckin figure out what the fuck it is. I have low blood pressure and I'm pretty thin at 5'3" 110lbs. Can anybody tell me if these are heart attacks or something else?

For what you're describing, see a doctor - don't just take advice you get from a messageboard. You might get some good ideas and insights, though nothing beats seeing a real doctor.

I agree, see a Dr. ASAP. Do you know that a hospital cannot force you to pay if you have no monay and need urgent care?
Whenever you get pain like that, eat an aspirin too. You should start taking one aspirin a day too. It helps thin the blood and it is cheap.

I have something like this. When I was 13 it was diagnosed as Mitral Valve Prolapse - basically a non-threatening heart valve dysfunction.

BUT - a couple years ago I went in and had a full work-up. The doctor thought, instead, that I might just be having a very strange, absolutely non-threatening kind of chest cramp. Since then, whenever I get these sorts of pains, which make me breathe very shallow and basically stop me cold, I just stretch my chest out and it's gone instantly.

This may not at all be what you have...but that's my little story. I agree about the doctor. You should go if you're worried.

Also, do you drink a lot of coffee? If so, cut it down or use decaf.
Do you have a lot of anxiety and depression? It could also be a panic attack.

Either way, see a Dr. to be sure.

As they said, nothing will beat the insight and advice of a trained medical physician.

Just something to consider - does this happen more often if you are stressed? Hope its nothing serious... good luck budday.

I had similar pains - I had a heart murmur which sets it off, and then causes anxiety, which makes it worse. I had episodes that were lasting for minutes at a time throughout the day.

They hooked me up to a halter monitor, which monitored my heart for 24 hours when the episodes were happening, and gave me a heart ultrasound to check on the murmur. It sounds like a huge pain in the ass, but it gave me piece of mind to have all the tests run.

If you go to the doctor, they can give you a beta blocker and/or tranquilizer which will greatly help the situation.

Being skinny doesn't mean anything. My father was very skinny and still died of a massive heart attack at 44. (cue DeNiro laughter)

i've had the same feelings on occassion over the years. you can't breathe deep, you can't lay a certain waw or twist your body a certain way or else the pain gets too deep. also sometimes when I get what i think to be "heartburn" I actually get alot of pain in my jaw. The pain in the jaw I've read can be associated with heart problems but I've had several EKG's over the years and they all come out clean.

Go MAKE SURE it's one of these small things, and if it happens to be something more serious, catching it early gives you a much better shot at beating it.

Looks like the general consensus is to see a doc. It's weird, I don't drink coffee and I don't do coke or snort adderall anymore. Stress could be a factor, but I don't even turn 21 til fucking March. I might go talk to a doctor when I go home during the summer.

Yea, waiting is about the worst thing you can do. If you're gonna ignore it, why did you even ask about it in here? You're concerned enough to ask our opinions but not concerned enough to have it checked out?

Fine dude, but if it is something severe, we have a clear conscience because we told you what to do.

Go to the clinic on campus. They are probably idiots and will tell you you are pregnant or something, but will likely refer you to a real doctor in town. If you have insurance, hopefully it will be just a small co-pay to see him. If they don't do anything, at least if you die, your parents can sue the shit out of them.

You don't want to catch a heart attack.

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2303/heartattackcerealqg0.jpg

I'll bet its stress since I love to get myself worked up about stupid shit.

I had a similar scary moment myself last year.

I had an all-day exam, which went fine, but I was hitting the coffee pretty hard during, and I'm not a coffee drinker. But neither am I particularly sensitive to caffeine.

I went home then, and since the semester was winding up, I decided to go to bed early. Much earlier than I do usually.

Well, as it turns out, that was the wrong idea. Shortly after I got into bed my heart starts racing, and then I lose feeling in my legs. My first reaction was "I'm coming Elizabeth....." My dad had a heart attack 15 years ago or so, so I've always been scared. After I stood up and walked around the numbness went away, but I was still having some weird feelings. I eventually settled myself down, but it took awhile - my remedy was throwing on a nice comedy, pacing around my apartment, and I also had someone I could talk to.

I went to my doc about it - eventually. She said the thing with heart attacks is to be really worried if you start losing feeling to your face. But they did an EKG and I had to have the halter monitor put on. They couldn't find anything the matter with me. Even eventually when it happened, I kinda thought by the end that it was a panic attack. And I guess that's what it was. I eventually got a prescription for klonopin but I never filled it. I don't particularly want to take something that strong. Haven't had a problem since, knock on wood.

Its a mixture of panic disorder and stress. You go to school, you probably work you have no time for anything. You feel a littile pain and your mind obsesses over it. You don't have the money or time to deal with it so you obesess over it some more. It builds and builds until you go to the doctor. He runs tests. He runs more tests. You go back several times. He prescribes so drugs. He gives you a minor general diagnosis. Don't waste your time, relax reasse your life, mellow out. Your Fine.

And again, not to belabor a point but what is being described sure sounds like the warning signs the American Heart Org et al give:

Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.

Other signs: These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
