So all of the W2's arrived in the mail and I was all set to go to H&R block to get my taxes done. I have gone there the last 2 years, but they charged an insane amount of money (140 dollars) to sit with me for like 20 minutes to do them.

So this year I decided to do them myself. I went to the IRS website, found some instructions and did them last night online. It was kind of nerve wracking, but I used the previous years returns as a guide. All in all, it took me about 45 minutes, but only because I had a lot more stuff to enter this year (switched jobs twice, interest from different banks).

It was mostly painless, and if you stay orgainzed through the year, you can easily have it done within an hour. Cost me 15 dollars in total to file both state and federal, and I am getting a refund!

Anyone here do their own? When do most of you do yours? Are any of you the idiots I see standing in Line April 15th at the post office at 11pm to mail them out, cause if so I hate you.

I've been doing my own since I started paying taxes. I have been using Turbo Tax for about 10 years. With it's ability to import previous returns, and divident, IRA, etc automatically, I am done in less than an hour. And because I get anally raped on property taxes, I get a pretty fair refund.

Oh yeah, the refund has already been wired to my bank. I did them last weekend.

The thought of fucking something up and getting audited keeps me from doing it myself. I'd rather pay for the service and have the peace of mind.

Plus my accountant found me a nice loophole/write-off that resulted in a VERY sweet return last year!

do not use H&R block. when i was a carpenter they did my taxes for two years and didnt let me deduct my boots and outerwear for work. I started go to a real accountant and he takes care of things for me. i have an appointment with him for the 24th.

I've always done my own. When I actually have things to deduct, or more complicated finances, I will get a professional to do them, but as long as I can fill out the 1040EZ, I'm doing it myself.

I need to find a tax guy! I just go to HR Block because of my traveling job, I get W2's from different states and there's all different laws. So there's no way I can do it myself. Next year though, I may try it myself online because 2007 tax year I am not traveling anymore, one job, one W2 from one state...should be fairly easy.

Since I was a full-time student and didn't make too much money last year my taxes are easy and I use the free e-filing options through IRS.gov. I used H&R Block for the last 3 years and it was always free to file because I made less that 52K and am under 50 years old. I did it again this year, got to the end and now they want to charge me $9.95. It's not a lot of money, but the point is that it was advertised as FREE on irs.gov

What's up with that? Should I just pay the $9.95, complain to someone, or use one of the other free-filing options?

my dad does the taxes for my wife and I. its the best time of year for us...its a nice bonus. one of the good things about paying so much interest during the year for my house. mine were mailed in last weekend. we get around $8K back this year. should get it in March, which is also 3 paycheck month and bonus month at work. so its a good financial time for us.

We have always done our own, using TurboTax for the last 4 years or so,
but each year it gets more complicated with new IRAs, freelance jobs,
BABY, etc. so it's tempting to get a tax preparer.
