. . . and I didn't know about it!

I have been working at the same company for what will be 6 years this March 19th. Except for my first week, when my then-boss asked me to be in the office between 9a & 5p, I've worked 7:30a-3:30p [we have what our company calls a "flex-time start," which basically means you can choose any time between the hours of 7am and 10am to arrive at the office as your start time as long as (a) your manager knows about it and (b) you're consistent] because I found that I could get more done with fewer people in the office . . . very few people arrive before 9am . . . and the bus/train/Turnpike was a lot less crowded.

During that time, I've learned that in order to get local office information, I needed to program the local-office "office closing hotline" into my cell phone. . .the one time I didn't, four years ago, I got a disciplinary write-up because the number I'd left for my boss got garbled on his voicemail, so he couldn't call me to tell me what was up, and I didn't show up for work that day because I also had to stay home and wait for PSE&G to fix the heat at my old apartment. So it counted as an unexcused absence and a blemish on my "I take my job seriously enough to call ahead and..." record.

The last time it snowed, we only got a dusting here and the sun came out, whereas at corporate HQ in Dayton (Ohio), they got 6" and a two-hour delay.

Yesterday, in all the snow and ice, where 1,000 car accidents happened in New Jersey because the fucking DOT didn't START plowing the Turnpike & Parkway until 1:30pm , we didn't have a delay or a closing. I was in tears after listening to the message at 6am which started with "today is Wednesday, February 14th. . ." and ended with ". . .the Newark office is open for business. . ." [Fine by you, ass, because you take the fucking train, but for those of us who drive, yesterday's weather was enough to induce a panic attack.]

Apparently, they closed at noon yesterday. [Now, if you're going to close early anyway, WHY do you keep the fucking office open??? There were 75 accidents yesterday in Union County ALONE and the roads in Essex County STINK today!!!]

Today, according to the company intranet, our office in Newark (NJ) and the office up in Albany (NY) are on a two-hour delay.

Did I know about this?

No.

Why not?

Today's message started "Today is Wednesday, February 14th . . ."

The fuckers called a 2-hour delay and didn't change the message early enough for me to know before I left the apartment to scrape the ice from my car at 6:25am in the 11 degree air.

I am at work, it's cold, it's quiet, my radio doesn't work and I am angry with the office management.

I hope they all die in fiery car crashes today.

Fuckers.

We have a snow or emergency call list tree at work. Where if you're called you pass the message to the next person (if you leave a message, you have to call down the list till you pass the message on to the next person). Since I live the farthest from the rest of my co-workers I'm second on the list. They called my yesterday at 6:15 a.m. and today at 6:40 a.m. for a delayed opening. Regardless, I called out both days. It isn't worth the aggrevation to drive to and fro to work and back home.

But if I drove there and the office was close or delayed opening, I've woulda made some noise about it.

My kid's school was closed yesterday. Today the roads looked fine so we scrambled out the door, drove to school to find and empty parking lot -- 2hr delay!!! I didn't even think to check because the streets looked clear.

Funny I went through more weather crap when I worked in NJ than in any state. I hated it. They never plow right or prep the roads for a storm.
