converting to .wmv

I bought a realy nice mp3 player and it plays videos but only .wmv files. All my movies and videos are mpeg and .avi how do I convert them to .wmv? And does anyone have any place to get a free converting software?

Microsoft provides the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx">Windows Media Encoder</a> free of charge. I've used it quite a bit. Windows Media 9 video looks amazing for the file sizes. The encoder is pretty flexible as well (you can convert music, video, capture live video, or record your screen) and it can also stream in real-time. My only complaint is that for very long avi files (like movies), it takes a while to scan them before you can use them.

i use <a href="http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm">winavi</a>..its free too.
