I am so sorry to make a thread for this, but nobody was even looking at the The OFFICIAL RonFez.net Travel/Vacation Thread anymore, and this is pressing:

(my plane leaves in less than 10 hours!)

jdmidkiff wrote:

OK, here's one for those of you who live in God's (Ron's) Country, NYC. I know most of you do live there, so I'm grateful for your help. I'm headed to Pittsburgh tomorrow for like 6 days, but I think I will take my wife into NYC just one day this weekend for her birthday. I need a recommendation for stuff to do other than the obvious touristy stuff (statue of lib, empire state, etc). I want something that tourists normally may not even know about, and would be a quintessential NYC experience. Keep in mind, I'm working with a Texas salary here, I don't have New York money, so it's got to be reasonable.

I haven't been to NYC since I was a teenager, and my wife has never been. This may also be the last time we ever go there, so it's got to be good. Any good suggestions? I am open to anything - restaurants, clubs, shows, special events, whatever. I need gold here, people! Any thoughtful ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Some pretty cool NYC places to go.

www.comedycellar.com if you like comedy

www.ucbtheatre.com sketch comedy. If you go on sundays, you can see asscat. Pretty cool stuff if you like that sort of thing. It's amy poehler's (sp?) place, so she is sometimes there.

www.nuyorican.org it's kinda cool if you like poetry slams. It's actually alot cooler than it sounds

those things can all be done for like 10 bucks per person.

Those are just some things I like to do, but i'm kinda weird. What area are you going to be in? What type of food do you like?

I knew I could count on you buddays! We honestly like all food - although we tend to go for the crazy ethnic stuff when we get to big cities.

The part of town is not set in stone - it's really wherever our activities take us.

One day in February, especially when it's going to be this fucking cold, really puts a limit on suggestions, because you're probably not going to want to be outside, but here's mine anyway.

If you're staying in a hotel see if they can hook you up with some discount tickets to a play on Broadway - it sounds hacky but they're usually pretty entertaining. During the day I would suggest the Metropolitan Museum, it's huge and has the widest variety of art & artifacts - you should find something that you find interesting. If you're more into science you can go up further and check out the Museum of Natural History.

If you can't get tickets to Broadway there are pretty cool jazz places in mid-town (Birdland) and down in the Village (The Blue Note). For dinner you can try one of the places Ron is always bragging about on the show (Bar Americain; David Burke/Donatella; etc.) but it might be tough to get in on a weekend and they're a little pricey. Get on City Search and run some preferences or grab a Time Out NY magazine and pick one at random. Odds are you'll get something good. Just avoid the famous chains (Olive Garden, etc.) even if they feel like a safe choice. Ron would never forgive you.

If you like Japanese toy figures, go to Toy Tokyo on 2nd Ave near St. Mark's Place, or Kid Robot on Prince Street. If you like a bunch of bars with college age people, go to Bleecker Street, and then go to Gray's Papaya on 6th Avenue and 8th street for late night hot dogs. Go to the handball court that Tom Hanks and John Heard fought at in the movie Big at 4th and 6th. Go to 51st and 7th, and see Les Paul play at the Iridium Jazz Club on Mondays.
