Fat Had To Drive Down Past Philly Yesterday. Somewhere Around The Airport, There Is A Long, High, Two Level Bridge. Well, It Was Snowing And There Were Trucks Zoomin' By, And Fat Has To Admit That The Best He Could Do Was Hold The Steering Wheel And Look Straight Ahead. It Wasn't Exactly A Panic Attack, But Fat Will Admit To White Knuckles By The Timer He Was Back On Terra Firma.

As Boy_Sunny, Fat Loved Every Bridge He Ever Met, Especially The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. But The Older He Gets, The Less Tolerance He Has For Them. Fat Suspects It Is Mainly Because They Do Not Have A Shoulder, Should Disaster Occur. Plus, He May Have A Borderline Case Of Vertigo.

Fat Especially Hates The Old, Narrow Bridges, Like The Goethals. But The Really High Ones, Like The Upper Level Of The Verrazano, Also Intimidate Him (Even Though He Thinks The Verrazano Is Incredibly Beautiful).

Which Bridge(s) Intimidates You? If None, Which Bridge Do You Most Like?

I hate any bridge that is long, high, or is arched. I drove over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to get to Ocean City, MD. once. I went through the toll gate, then saw the bridge. I pulled over immediately. I had to sit there for about 10 minutes before I could get the courage to keep going. I must have pissed off a lot of other drivers, as I drove about 25 MPH the whole way. I can't even handle being the passenger in a car going over a big bridge.

ok, this bridge was torn down about 6 or 7 years ago, was in my hometown of boonville, Mo.

its hard to describe the pure terror that grips you as you begin the passage across the missouri river on this archaic piece of shit, but i will try.

first thing you notice is that the lanes are ridiculously skinny. to your right is a forest of steel beams that seem to lean in on you, and to your left is a car that pass's so close to you, that it was very common for cars to shake hands (bang side mirrors).

the next thing you notice is the actual driving surface, hmmm what would they make the driving service out of??? concrete? no....asphalt? nah....they made it out of steel, yes steel, which is real fun in the winter as its glazed with ice. but the best part is that they made it out of steel strips about an inch in width, and about ten feet long. also these ten foot sections don't align with each other, so as you pass each section your car shifts to the left or the right in a weird sideways turbulent type of way.

lastly is the sound the steel makes as your car drives on it, a low rumble so deep it vibrates your car to its very core.

in the background to the right is the new bridge they were building at the time

I'm not really afraid of it, but the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway between Mandeville, LA and New Orleans is pretty creepy to drive across at night because it's about 25 miles long, doesn't seem like you're more than five feet above the lake and all you can see around you is water.

i was actually coming here to defend the tap, first from ron and now from the hipster. the tappan zee is a fine bridge. it's quick and a lot of cars use it. there are 7 lanes and i've never seen a lane shut down (4 for the rush hour and 3 for the opposite...the center wall is movable...my favorite part). i drive it once or twice a week and have never had a problem.

The Thomas Creek Bridge(over 1,100 ft.high) inbetween Gold Beach & Brookings OR,when we rode on the bus to & from football/basketball games the teachers used to say the howling noises we heard going across it were dead cheerleaders looking for their souls.

As you can see it has very narrow lanes. I used to have to drive a waste oil tanker across it every day to bring the oil to a recycling plant in Linden NJ. I white knuckled it across every time. I swear that the side of the truck was within inches of the side wall of the bridge. I still shudder just thinking about it.

Now see, I fear that bridge bc it allows Staten Island peeps to get into New Jersey. Keep those awful/dirty Statin Island twins on your side! And Statin was a pun stupid!

ok, this bridge was torn down about 6 or 7 years ago, was in my hometown of boonville, Mo.

its hard to describe the pure terror that grips you as you begin the passage across the missouri river on this archaic piece of shit, but i will try.

first thing you notice is that the lanes are ridiculously skinny. to your right is a forest of steel beams that seem to lean in on you, and to your left is a car that pass's so close to you, that it was very common for cars to shake hands (bang side mirrors).

the next thing you notice is the actual driving surface, hmmm what would they make the driving service out of??? concrete? no....asphalt? nah....they made it out of steel, yes steel, which is real fun in the winter as its glazed with ice. but the best part is that they made it out of steel strips about an inch in width, and about ten feet long. also these ten foot sections don't align with each other, so as you pass each section your car shifts to the left or the right in a weird sideways turbulent type of way.

lastly is the sound the steel makes as your car drives on it, a low rumble so deep it vibrates your car to its very core.

in the background to the right is the new bridge they were building at the time

Holy shit, there was a bridge just like this in Wyoming/Pittston area of PA that was exactly as you described your bridge. When the Susqu River got too high, it would actually push through the spaces on the fucking bridge as it was lower then the damn dikes on either side. While it was cool, it was a fucking mess of engineering at best. I'd assume it was a cost saver due to the cheap nature of the area I grew up. "Always cut corners to pilfer money for yourself" is the town slogan for Wilkes-Barre, Pa. No shit, it's on the city seal.

I'm not really "afraid" of any bridges persay, but I'm not a fan of a couple of them.....
This is one of those open-grate bridges (Paducah, KY to Brookport, IL). It is also a bright blue smurf color, which is distracting while driving over. You have to find the proper speed to drive across this thing and firmly grip the wheel, because the open-grate road will pull you from side to side.
http://www.kentuckyroads.com/images/ohio_river/050-03oct20.jpg
Another two bridges that I don't care for are the ones that go to and from the Land Between the Lakes area in Kentucky. It is a true challenge to go across either one of these bridges while a tractor-trailer is approaching. I know quite a few people who will drive many miles out of their way to avoid these bridges.

I remember when we lived in Seattle, we were taking a day trip to Mercer Island. Anyway, as we are crossing this floating bridge, my dad proceeds to tell us that it's sister bridge sunk 6 months prior. That was the beginning of my bridge fears. Way to go DAD!!!!

I'm not afraid of any bridiges, I don't understand the fear, but I do empathize with it. My sister is scared of them in the way that Fez is, and even though rationality (I'm not being sarcastic) overrides with me, I do understand how a person could feel the way they do about driving over a bridge the way Fez or my sis do.

When I was a kid, we'd always go to the beach near the mouth of the bay. I'd look out at the horizon and see that bridge and think about how tiny it looked. Now that I'm older, and terrified of bridges, the thought of driving on it is almost unthinkable.
BTW... If I remember correctly, a beer truck drove over the side of it about a year ago.

Where is this bridge? ( I have to know so I can avoid it at any cost!)
Is it just me or has anyone else pondered this question. How do they build the bridges? I never saw any being built. Just wake up one day & poof a bridge. That amazes me.
