I'm not a big fan of Sony products. they have some pretty poor quality control. I've lost head units, dvd players, that just stopped working. I heard there tv's are pretty good, but I would never trust them. Also, what type of tv was it? projection, lcd and plasma tv's do have lifespans. Once they hit a certain amount of hours, they can easily go.

Yes they can die that early. Most companies build them to last 5-10 years. It keeps you in the market of buyer. If the light is on, it may be the tuner or something on the borad

It's a 32 '' WEGA, I figure I might as well look for a new one since repair will probably be expensive.

Any recommendations other than SONY ??

As someone who sells TVs here's my advice:

You're correct that fixing it will be more expensive than its worth, repairs for TVs like that run around 800-1200 on average. TVs are like cars, the parts are more expensive when bought individually.

Sony in general has outstanding repair records for all of their TV sets, but if you're dead set against buying them again I would also recommend staying away from Samsung as well (same plants as sony for LCDs.)

If you're looking in the 32'' range buy a flat panel LCD, you'll get good quality, HD and 1080i or 1080p at a good price. Most TVs you look at will not be standard definition, but at that size you will not be disappointed with the image quality. LCDs also last longer than most other technologies. I would recommend a Sony LCD but if you must go away from them look at Mitsubisi and Toshiba.

I'm not the greatest supporter of Sony gear. They have this knack for breaking down just as the warranty expires.

I rock a 51" RCA scenium in my living room upstairs and an RCA 51" in my basement. I used to roll with a 46" JVC but as time passed I felt the need for widescreen and HDTV. I can't see buying a sony.

Also, Panasonic has been great quality and price was lately, look at their PD series if you want non-HD and flat panel.

I'm one of those guys that loves to buy named shit (yes im an asshole) but the one thing I never cared about name brand was a TV. I have always bought no named TV's and all have looked just as good as the named brand and lasted as long too.

I currently have a Apex in my living room and its close to 7 years old no problems ever. I actually wish it would die so I could buy a plasma. In my bedroom I have a sylvania with a dvd/vcr player built in, once again close to 7-8 years old and it works great.

But if we are talking cars and clothes then my shallow ass has to buy name brand. (like I said I'm shallow)

Sony is a great brand, don't let them convince you that "they make them to break in 5 years" or that Sonys "have a history of problems." You don't stay succussful in the electronics business if you make junk. If the brand was bad you would have already known about it, not heard the breaking news on it here.

Same goes for any big name-brand electronics maker. Get something you can afford, will fit into your system and on your TV stand, that looks good, whatever brand you like...

On the upside, there have been real developments in technology in the last few years so that if you're willing to make an investment, you'll get a much better picture with HD, flat screen/plasma etc. And you might want to get the extended warranty.

Bob is right on with Sony and they way they back their products. I had a small issue with the XBR 36" and they came to my house the next day with the parts to fix it. In and out in 20 minutes, on time with a half hour window, and haven't had an issue yet.

At this moment, Pioneer rules the Plasma field with their elite products (not including the Ronco and Fujitsu super high priced units but they still compare well) and Sony battles Sharp in the LCD world. Samsung and others are in the battles here and there, but the pictures don't stand up and they sell more on a value buy platform. As for other brands like Apex and others in LCD, if your going with a small, say kitchen size screen it doesn't quite matter as much. But to say the difs are minimal at the 32 and up size is crazy. I'll take that pepsi challenge any day of the week.

I haven't had problems with Sony products, outside of the PS1 and PS2 which were absolute nightmares.

I've had the same Hitachi TV for well over 15 years. It's showing no signs of dying out either. Color is fine, tone is good, and sound works fine. Zenith might be good too. Our Mitsubishi TV burned out after about 8 or 10 years.

I have a 32 inch sony in a wood case. Its about 20 years old. No repairs and it still has a great Pic.

I wish it would Die so I can get an HD tv

And yes, Hbox, I've had problems with PS1 and PS2s- constant issues in fact. Disc reading problems, so on, so forth. But I probably didn't treat the systems well enough to keep them functional. I know plenty of people who never had issues with these systems. But then again, it may be poor quality.

They actually built things to last.
