good ol American mentality, get it done or your out. He went 14 & 2
Yes, but they should have won it all. They certainly had the talent. Wade wasn't it getting it done for them either and that was a shitty move for Dallas. They got fucking EMBARRASSED by a clearly inferior team in the Patriots. I was not overly impressed with their wins this year, even though there were 14 of them.

Teams have small windows of winning these days. When you put a squad together these days you only have a couple of years to pull it off and if you don't have a couch to put you over the hump then what do you have.

No one is really going to remember they were 14-2.

Anyway, good luck Marty.

I don't really care for Manning or Schottenheimer, but isn't it better to go with someone talented who has the known potential to be able to get you deep into the post season? There's always a shot they could win it for you.

Hes a great coach and I dont think this years loss had anything to do with him. It just didnt happen. I will guess next year they go 9-7 or 10-6 and miss the playoffs. Who will be the coach?

I don't know what it is about him, i see some your points about the coaching decisions, but it has to be much more than that. He is a proven playoff loser. If i would have had the option to fire him after the chiefs 13-3 season i would have done it. Good riddance.

To fire Marty this late in the game, they must have a replacement already in mind.

14-2 still is 14-2. Lets see how they do without em.

You're all nuts if you think he didn't deserve this. Do me a favor - go ahead and google "Martyball" and look at all the pundits just rip it apart.

Yes 14-2 is good.

Ask the Steelers fans if they like their season where they went 15-1 better or the season where they won the Super Bowl. Unless you win, who gives a rats ass? And Snacks, this has EVERYTHING to do with his coaching. Don't you see? The chargers clearly have the talent to be champions. It was Marty's play calling and lack of control over his team that led to them losing that game, which again, they really shouldn't have lost.

I know Russ Grimm went to Arizona to run the offensive line, but I think he is a perfect fit for this San Diego team. Bill Cowher is Marty Schottenheimer with a Super Bowl ring (he was Marty's DC in Kansas City). Russ Grimm is VERY much like Cowher and Schottenheimer when it comes to play-style. He could fit right in there without much of a problem.

Ron Rivera is probably the best guy available - but San Diego plays the 3-4 - and has PURE 3-4 tallent especially on the defensive line (Olshansky and Castillo could not play DE in the 4-3). Rivera is a 4-3 guy all the way.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Norv Turner and Mike Singletary get interviews. How quick will there be Pete Carrol rumors as well?

The entire coaching staff around him abandoned ship, so I'm not shocked that the Chargers figured it was best to start completely fresh. Maybe his son will replace him.

They had a great recruiting year and should be ranked #1 to open the season but this may be the time to go back to the Pros.

I wanted him to take the Miami job, maybe he will take this one???

He turned a putrid D into one of the most feared with great drafting, scemes and play-calling. Your "clearly inferior team" just happened to be the best team of this decade and no matter what they come with a pressence, the opposite of Marty's. I personally would have loved to see him as the next coach bc he's clearly gotten better and learns with every step he makes in his career. There's no doubt in my mind that Dallas will be a playoff team because of him next year, and without him I'm afraid of what will happen to the Charger's D. Sure they have talent, but no O coordinator, D coordinator, TE coach, backup running back, key LB in Edwards and many more role players. If they don't have a plan right now with this move they are the dumbest org in football (well behind Arizona and Detroit of course) for doing this sooo fucking late.

And there is never a team in the NFL any longer that "should have won it all". With the parity in this league you have to be kidding. You contradict yourself in your own post later by stating "I was not overly impressed with their wins this year, even though there were 14 of them." SO which is it Narc? Not to get on you, but that's out there man. And I agree with the last statement, but a win is a win and all teams have dirty victories. The problem is Marty loses games dirty in the playoffs year in and year out when he had many opps to put it away. He needed to go, just not this fucking late.

And looking for a coach right now is like voting in the 2004 election. Fuck the outlook is bleak no matter who gets the fucking job. I really hope they have a surprise for me here or I'm going to kick Spanos's ass, and then slash AJ Smith's tires and bang both their daughters. What the fuck is going on with all my teams!?

They had a great recruiting year and should be ranked #1 to open the season but this may be the time to go back to the Pros.

I wanted him to take the Miami job, maybe he will take this one???

Carrol was a mediocre Pro coach at best. Took a team who was in the super bowl and drove them completely into mediocrety. Good luck with him. I have no idea how he was so good in college. Then again it might of been the fact it wasn't too hard to recruit kids to a college in SoCal and offer them bags of cash.

I think I had a post in the NFL thread after that game about how they should fire Marty and I was shocked it didn't come immediately.

I've actually met Wade Phillips before by chance and I'm not gonna bash on him. Having met him, I can say he's a great guy with a great personality. BUT you're nuts Spoon if you're gonna credit him for the Bolts defense. A.J. Smith is a genius GM and I'd much rather give him the credit. Also, Shawne Merriman is overrated. I couldn't believe people actually were considering giving him the MVP. He CHEATED. He had a lot of tackles and sacks, yes and played fewer games. But he was also a fucking juicer and nobody can deny that.

The problem with Wade Phillips is that, like Marty Schottenheimer, he's not going to get you anywhere. He had some great years in Buffalo, and he's certainly an above average defensive coach. But, for one, those teams that he inherited from Levy were just overloaded with talent. It can be argued by some that he misplayed the Doug Flutie/Rob Johnson situation from day one, but I actually mostly agreed with what he did. In hindsight, it did sort of look bad. Lastly, Homerun Throwback. That was entirely due to his coaching. He could have run out the clock, and didn't. As a result, the Bills lost that game. Then he scapegoated Bruce DeHaven for it, who was a great special teams coach and brought in his crony, Ronnie Jones, who completely ruined the Bills special teams. Where is Ronnie Jones now? Coaching Special Teams on the HIGH SCHOOL level. So yeah, forgive me if I'm a little skeptical of Wade Phillips's abilities to pick out subordinates or to ultimately be successful. I think he's one of those people who's best suited as a coordinator and not as a head coach. I'd probably say the same thing of Jauron, btw.

I caught what I said earlier about the Chargers and how they should have killed the Patriots, but that I also said that they weren't that impressive. Let me explain. With parity, there's not that much separating any team from another. I did think though, that going into the playoffs, the Chargers were marginally the best team in the league. Based purely on talent, I'm not sure I would've put the Pats in the top ten. I know they're the team of the decade blah blah blah, but their decade is over. They just can't keep the same people that they had when they were winning championships because that's what happens when you win - the key players get too expensive to keep the team together. The Pats may be able to rebuild to their former dominance, but they're a shadow of their former selves. Almost all of the people that helped in their championships are gone from both the players to the coaches. I think the Chargers were clearly better.

Maybe his son will replace him

god i hate you gvac. dont take our brilliant o coord away from us. please dont.

yeah i like this move i really do. schotts was a great regular season coach, playoffs are another story. but lt is gonna be knock knock knockin on thirty's door next year and u have to expect his production to go down. so i dont think the chargers could duplicate this season even if they kept the coach. and it looked like the opposing coaches figured rivers out at the end of last season so either he gets better or the chargers get worse.

and if this past 14-2 season is schotts fault then going 38-42 the five years before is schotts fault too. spoons the only one with a valid argument, that it shouldve been done sooner so you can still get a good coach, but my response is who has been taken that is so good? apart from whisenhunt none of the other coaches hired are gonna last more than 3 years. they can still get a good coach. if it were up to me they take waiver on this year, and throw a boatload of money at cowher next year, this way they fuck over the giant and still get a fantastic coach.
