Politics aside, whether you agree that we should be there or not, how can you sign up not fearing for your life and the lives that you affect back home when you see all the stuff that's on TV and all the amounts of soldiers that have died?

It's a normal feeling I would think. If you get drafted and have to go then you just need to keep an open mind that you will be trained and you will be surrounded by 'your own' and there will be alot of support and soldiers covering your back just as you would cover theirs.

If you take the total amount of soldiers that have been in and out of Iraq and then factor in the dead and wounded the percentage may come to a comfortable enough number to ease your mind. Let's just say 10% of the total actually get killed or wounded. I'm guessing it's less but still too much in my book.

I always wonder how i would react myself. I put myself in the Civil War where 500 guys lined up and just ran across a field of gunfire and cannonfire and into a row of 500 of the enemy. If you were in the frontline what were your chances of surviving? You were basically commanded to commit suicide. I think I would have accidentally tripped and waited for shit blowover. That's it, i would have had a bad case of the tripsies throughout the war

"*>I'm very afraid of any impending draft because once I hear it happening, I'm pretty sure I'll have to make the most of what life I have left because I'm pretty sure I will DIE."

I tell you what. It is a long time coming until there is a draft. What happens when you sign up, you are dedicated for another 4 years once you are gone from the military. Before you can have a draft, you have to call back EVERY one of the people who are still military obligated. I am one of those people.

Ok I hear ya on the not wanting to die aspect. Nobody does lad. But many of us who joined know that is a very distinct possibility (chances less in AF and Coast Guard), yet it is something you accept. You find that life in the military is not as bad as you see on the news and what have you. You go there, you do your job, and godwilling you get out of there ok. That is all many people over there, no matter where they are just want to do. Whether it be in Korea, Iraq, Germany, whatever. You just want to do your job than come home.

I'm actually considering joining after I graduate. I figure I'm young and I wanna try different shit, besides I don't think it's anymore dangerous than the shit I do/did for fun. I have no fear of dying, but losing a leg or something seems horrific. Either way, it's "MANDATORY SUICIDE!!!!!"

Just my little piece on why I would never join the military. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate everything that our armed forces do for us. The problem is the goverment treats them like shit, and it's a fucking shame.

My dad was a vietnam vet, he was a helicopter gunner in the marines. Right before he finished his 4 years, a jeep hit him, and he left the army 1 inch shorter. did they give him disability? no. Then like ten years ago, he got this rare form of cancer in his face, and the VA hospitals fucked him up so bad. They had these kids working on him that knew nothing, and misdiagnosed and all sorts of shit. Towards the end, he couldn't hear, you couldn't understand a word he said, because they did surgery through the top of his palate, and the replacement palate didn't fit, he looked nothing like he used to because they broke all the bones in his face so many times. He could barely work because he was on so many painkillers and shit like that. They ripped him to pieces. The VA finally attributed it to service related like 3 months ago. agent orange maybe. He got 20K. He died like 2 months later. So his money got used for a funeral.

All that service you give for your country, and all you get is a flag. the goverment doesn't respect you, and it's now getting to the point where even the american people don't respect you. It's a fucking shame how we treat our armed forces.

And that's another thing, when I eventually have kids later on in my life, and if this war is still going on, I would be extremely fearful that I would lose a child because of the destruction and violence I see.ÿ I can't help it because it surrounds me all the time in the news and in reports and all the death tolls that are spoken of.ÿ It's a very scary idea.ÿ Pride for our county aside, I can't help but be selfish and value the lives of myself and my future children.ÿ

I am hoping that whoever is over there now will do what they have to do so that I, nor my future children, will never have to go over there.

I didn't want to join the military because of the PT and the lack of privacy.

Apparently, neither is that big of a problem in the Naval Intel Reserves. Who knew...

Everyone should serve, it is part of your civic duty. If you've been paying attention, people are pissed because its the working class and poor families that are contributing the most bodies to this war. You can sit back on suck on the teat of democracy because there are people who are willing to sacrifice their life to defend that democracy. There are always weaker parts of society that will need protection from the strong.

The Officers are educated and 95% of the time from a wealthy family. They are republicans and convince most of their troops to vote this way and that is why they make the big deal over who supports troops.

I don't give a shit about statistics, they mean nothing to me. How many people are listed as missing or wounded so they don't have to be reported as KIA? who gives a shit?

I can't serve due to my medical condition, but if there were a draft and I was eligible I would serve. This country has done great things for me. I know it's always screwed people over, but in my life I'm happy with it.

These feelings are all normal. All I can add to this is that, as a guy who didn't see the worth of service to his country when he would have been useful, I feel regret for not having served our country.
