View Full Version : Warning: Don't leave your XM antenna outside!

I turned on my XM this afternoon and got the "no signal" message even though
the antenna was attached. I have it stretched out the door on my deck because I
can't get a signal inside. I went out to check it and everything seemed ok except
for a few kinks in the wire but when I picked up the wire I found it had snapped in
two! I guess the cold was too much for it. I ordered a new one through
MyRadioStore and will be bringing it inside every night from now on.

I was thinking about putting mine outside. The one that came with the Myfi said to mount it indoors, but the one that came with the Nexxus said it can go outside. I never thought about the cold, though. Thanks for the warning!

Curious.  My car antenna has never had a problem.  I just worry sometimes that it will come tearing off when I drive through the car wash.  Hasn't happened yet.

I keep my antenna for my Delphi stereo inside in the winter but it gets a much better reception when I put it out in the summer.  I keep the antenna for my car inside the vehicle so that it doesn't scratch the roof of my car and so that it doesn't get ice built up on it.

The wash I go to can be pretty violent. It almost ripped my front tag off. Here's a question about the car one, though. How come it gets a blocked signal from a few trees, but if there's 4 inches of snow on top of the antenna, it works fine?</p>

I don't think it was the cold. Probably critters. I've had the car antenna on for a few yers without moving it. When I put the home antenna outside, I tuck it all nicey nice behind the vinyll siding and window trim.

Hmm..maybe it was a critter! I just assumed it was the cold because the
wire was so stiff but I do have squirrels on my deck that eat the birdseed.

Maybe it was a whistlepig?

She lords over the whistle pigs. They wouldn't dare do that to her!
