View Full Version : Rediscovering Old Albums
<p>I'm a music freak and own well over 500 CDs, as well as hundreds of songs downloaded off of iTunes. From time to time a certain band will grab my attention and I'll try to get everything they've ever done. Sometimes I get into a groove and I'll only listen to a certain genre of music, like blues or folk or country. </p><p>Every once in awhile, however, I'll dig deep into my collection and rediscover just how amazing and magical a long forgotten album is. </p><p>For the past 2 weeks, Dire Straits' first three albums have not left my stereo, computer, or car. Straits was the second band I completely flipped over (Skynyrd was the first) way back in Jr. High. I was mesmerized by Mark Knopfler's guitar, voice, and lyrics, and I've discovered that I still am. When people speak of great singer/songwriter/guitarists, he's all too often left off the list. </p><p>I'm more convinced than ever that I need a National Steel guitar. </p><p>Any old bands or albums you guys have unearthed after many years and find you still love 'em? </p>

<p>I never go through my old albums which really aren't too many. I've never been a major collector of anything. What I will do is sometimes I'll hear a tune 'on the radio or someone may mention it' that I really enjoy but never purchased and I'll go and download it off the net along with a bunch of other tunes by the same band. I'll burn e'm and listen to them a few times</p><p>Recently it was bunch of Collective Soul, Soul Asylum, and Lou Reed tunes</p>

<p>WalMart was running a commercial for a Stevie Ray Vaughan CD a couple of weeks ago & my roommate asked if I had it & could he get a copy. So I looked it up just to see what they decided to put on it & decided it wasn't a proper "Greatest Hits" collection. So I set about compiling one for him. Just for kicks I burned myself a copy & threw it in the car (even though I've become a talk radio-phile & rarely even think to throw in a CD). </p><p>AND I HAVE BEEN LOVING IT!</p><p>That is all.</p>

I gotta agree with you about Dookie, even though it wasn't that great an album, it has some nostalgic value.

<p>I have been listening to all of my old Skinny Puppy albums alot in the last month or so. Every so often I really enjoy some old 80's style industrial and right now I am on one of those kicks. The Revolting Cocks, Lead Into Gold, 1000 Homo DJ's, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and the first couple Ministry releases are on my list right now too. I love the late 80's, early 90's industrial sound, especially the releases from the great Wax Trax! label.</p><p><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/9164/bigsexytc1.jpg" border="0" alt="img256/9164/bigsexytc1.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="183" height="184" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9645/twitchie3.gif" border="0" alt="img260/9645/twitchie3.gif" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="125" height="125" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/3820/twelveitv9.gif" border="0" alt="img260/3820/twelveitv9.gif" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="125" height="125" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/1200/powerdq1.jpg" border="0" alt="img474/1200/powerdq1.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="125" height="131" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4065/mindus2.jpg" border="0" alt="img442/4065/mindus2.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="150" height="150" /></a> <a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6348/rabiesvh3.jpg" border="0" alt="img265/6348/rabiesvh3.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="150" height="150" /></a></p><p><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/3792/1000qj5.jpg" border="0" alt="img256/3792/1000qj5.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="200" height="200" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/3524/reasonkt0.jpg" border="0" alt="img474/3524/reasonkt0.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="232" height="230" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5700/landqu1.gif" border="0" alt="img442/5700/landqu1.gif" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="125" height="125" /></a></p><p><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"></a> <a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/5737/220pxwaxtraxlogointrohn3.jpg" border="0" alt="img256/5737/220pxwaxtraxlogointrohn3.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="220" height="487" /></a><a onclick="return fitsInWindow();"><img src="http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/362/physicalos0.jpg" border="0" alt="img442/362/physicalos0.jpg" title="Click to visit ImageShack for Image Hosting!" width="340" height="338" /></a></p><span class="post_edited"></span><span class="post_edited"></span>

<p><font size="2">I, like GVAC, am a BIG music collector. A little over 1000 CD's at last count. Life has been so hectic, that the collection's been seriously negleted. Just started listening again recently and have pulling a wierd mix out, like the latest 2 CD Supertramp "hits" collection. From that I pulled out Roger Hodgson's 2 great solo albums "In The Eye Of The Storm" & "Hai Hai".</font></p><p><font size="2">Today I decided to finally REALLY listen to some of new albums I picked up last year, like the new ones from The WHO, "Endless Wire", David Gilmour's "On An Island" (has a Floyd "Obscured By Clouds" flavor to it.)</font> <font size="2">and Donald Fagan's "Morph The Cat"</font></p><p><font size="2">From the "played in the house all the time when I was a kid" dept., (don't laugh) Barry Manilow's second album. He was a really good pop/rock guy in the early 70's, before he got all "showtuney".</font></p><p><font size="2">Now I've got Rush "Presto" playin' as I type this. VERY underrated album!</font> </p>

This was released by the record company against Zappa's wishes in 1978. It was a contractual release thing. There is a song that takes up all of one side called "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary." If you haven't heard it go and download it. It's the story of a pig who invents the calendar and pisses everyone off. It's both hilarious and terrific musically. Yet Zappa thought it was shit. "Peccary" is also on CD 3 of "Lather" (I don't have "Studio Tan") I haven't listened to FZ in awhile. May have to put that one in!</p><p>I just found on YouTube one of Franks last interviews before he passed. It was for the Today Show. It's pretty interesting! </p>

XM just started a Zeppelin channel and they are playing the new extended cleaned up "The Song Remains the Same" Soundtrack and it sounds great. I loved what Jimmy did with "How the West was Won" but I always loved this movie and soundtrack. I will be picking this one up in a couple of weeks. I still have my vinyl copy but this was not one of the zep albums I bought on CD.
I've been listening to a lot of Clapton lately, and 461 Ocean Boulevard is the album I've been really digging.
I haven't listened to this thing front to back in 25 years. Still sounds great.

"461" is the gayest album Eric ever released.
Now I'll have to dig out the "John Mayall's Blues Breakers" album just so I can sleep tonight.
Thanks a lot!
