I find myself sort of intellectually appreciating Rush more than I find myself actually enjoying them. That is, I'll listen to an album like "Moving Pictures" or "2112", and say, "Well, this is a well-made, well-written, album", but I won't get around to listening to them again for a while.
I do think they made progressive/art rock into the most listenable, enjoyable form, but there's still a certain calculated, cold feeling to it that drives me away in a way.

<p>IMO, Rush is one of the greatest bands of all time and after looking at the list, I am shocked that they havent been inducted into the Rock & Roll HOF yet. Nevermind people crying about Kiss not making it it, this is a true travesty. </p><p> </p>

I grew up listening to bands like Rush and U2. It's like a lot of people say - if you can get past Geddy Lee's voice, you will find one of the most musically talented bands in the history of rock-n-roll. Anyone who can't appreciate the complexities of bands like Rush and Dream Theater most likely has never picked up an instrument in their lives. Can't wait to hear it.

to answer that question, i have to quote my favorite cartoon:
Farnsworth: "Hope you won't think it's evil of me to ask how you got that stylish head-wound?"
Farnsworth 1: "Oh, this old thing? I was experimenting to see if I could remove my own brain."
Farnsworth: "Of course! I had the same idea. I flipped a coin to decide if I should proceed. But it came out tails, so I didn't. How'd it go?"
Farnsworth 1: "Well, getting the brain out was the easy part. The hard part was getting the brain out." *laughs in a silly way*
Farnsworth: "Hehehe, you..." (http://www.gotfuturama.com/Multimedia/EpisodeSounds/4ACV15/05.mp3)

RUSH - Snakes & Arrows.... A Review
Current mood: pleased
Category: Music
On this first day of May, I am a happy guy! I just got done listening to the new CD from RUSH, "Snakes & Arrows". This is their first new music since 2002's "Vapor Trails", which was very good, but marred by overproduction. Yes, there was 2004's "Feedback", but that was all cover tunes (not a bad thing)
Well, there's no production problems here! The sound is full, rich, & clear. Everything sounds great, thanks to Foo Fighters producer Nick Raskulinecz and engineer Richard Chycki.
Now for the question... "Which RUSH are we getting here?".
With a band that's been around for over 30 years, and has been trying to not do the exact same thing twice, they pretty much acomplish that! That's not to say that there aren't familiar sounds on the album, but overall this is a fresh sound. The only keyboard that's used is a mellotron! Not much though. Too bad. I like the sound of the mellotron.
But onto the songs....13 in all, at over an hour! I reference the albums that the songs remind me of.
1. Far Cry - This is the first single and a good choice! Rocks from beginning to end. Has a little "2112" & "Hemispheres" in it.
2. Armor and Sword - Melodic head swayer. Has a little "Power Windows" feel to it.
3. Workin' Them Angels - Straight foward rock tune. A hint of "Test For Echo" here.
4. The Larger Bowl - A nice acoustic guitar based track. Some "Vapor Trails" in this one.
5. Spindrift - Ominous little ditty, in a good way! Also "Vapor Trails"ish
6. The Main Monkey Business - The first of 3 instumentals. It actually sounds like early '90's IRON MAIDEN to me! Some more "Test For Echo" as well.
7. The Way The Wind Blows - My favorite tune so far! Should be the next single. Very R&B and Geddy does nice vocal work on this one.
8. Hope - A short acoustic piece from Alex, in the vein of Steve Howe from Yes.
9. Faithless - Half "Roll The Bones" & half "My Favorite Headache" (Geddy's solo album)
10. Bravest Face - A nice country western type song.
11. Good News First - Mid tempo with a "Counterparts" feel.
12. Malignant Narcissism - The third and short instrumental. Basically a jam.
13. We Hold On - Has a PEARL JAM influence in there.
The bottom line is "Snakes & Arrows" is a REALLY good album! Very solid! Have we heard it before? Sure. But what's wrong with that?
Yeah, ya pretty much need to be a RUSH fan to some extent to understand the references.
Final Score: A-

it took a while but the cd finally grew on me, I think it starts out a lot stronger than it ends, but overall it's a solid release. The Dream Theater disc & the Symphony X disc are both phenominal also (and have occupied 95% of my listening time for the past several weeks).
