View Full Version : What was your signature school lunch?

Snacks' gilled cheese thread, and my own Electronic Quarterback thread, got me thinking about grammar school lunch time.

Most kids seemed to have their own signature lunch. Mine was bolonga and american cheese on Wonder Bread with mustard. Some kids had the obligatory pb&j. One kid always had a thermos full of Chef Boyardi or soup.

What was your mom's "go to" lunch that you seemed to get over and over? Was it your comfort food that you looked forward to, or did you dread opening your lunch bag for fear that you got the same thing again?

A slice of salami with a smear of cream cheese and rolled up like a cigarette. Many of these, like 10 of them. It's very tasty.

My specialty was thermos hot dogs. I would make two dogs in the morning, put them in buns, and wrap them in tin foil. Then I stuffed them each into their own thermos. It kept them warm until lunchtime at which time I would add my condiments. They were the best.

My mom would always make me roast beef and mayonnaise sandwiches, but I hated roast beef and mayonnaise, and told her on countless occassions.ÿ I would throw the sandwich out and let her know, but sure enough, the next day there it was again!ÿÿ

But I always had the following in my lunch:

1.
I got $1. In Elementary School, $1 would get you the school lunch (85 cents, usually those square pizzas) and a cookie and a pretzel.

In high school, I'd get $2. My best friend would also get $2. We would pool our money, buy a pack of cigarettes, and split a regular lunch.

For a few years it was ham on white bread with mayo. Then I switched to jelly on white bread, no peanut butter. For some reason I hated peanut butter out of a jar as a kid but I loved Reese's. I was such an idiot.

When I was growing up we got to go home for lunch in grammer school so whatever grandma cooked, that was lunch. And play videogames or watch t.v.

Highschool- Usually was a pretzel w/musturd and a soda and I pocketed the rest of the money. I used a slushee from 7-11 but Silent Sam vodka was my favourite in high school. A couple joints at lunch and then a big vodka slurpee for the afternoon to take care of the cottonmouth side effects.

I'm part of the earliest generation of two working parents. My signature school lunch was whatever the school was serving.

1st - 3rd Grade: we had to stay at school for lunch. during that time, plenty of tuna fish sandwiches.

4th Grade: we were allowed to go home for lunch. lots of frozen pizza or steak-um's at home (with milk!!! damn you, mom!!!)

7th & 8th Grade: got a couple of bucks for lunch. usually sal's pizza. got enough money for 2 slices & a soda, but often just got one slice and played arcade games with the rest of the money.

Peanut butter and grape jelly on WOnder bread in an "Inch High Private Eye" Lunch Box.

grammar school - whatever the hot lunch was, it was included in tuition. that was a catholic school, so it's not universal to not have hot meals at them.

high school - blt or just bacon on a roll. counting breakfast and lunch i'd have those 6-8 times a week at school and just skip the remaining meals (except when they had stuffed shells or manicotti or some other fun treat).

Nutella on white bread or Cream cheese and Jelly, 2 juice boxes, and some kind of fruit in elementary and middle school.

High school, pop tarts and french vanilla coffee, or a bagel with cream cheese and coffee.

My mom never gave me money to bring to school. We were poor =/

Grammar School= a disturbingly warm and smelly peanut butter sandwich on wheat, somehow my locker and ziploc bags just baked them and gave them a crazy smell! Juice "Hugs", which are the barrel shaped kool-aid things. Brown apple slices.
High School= .75 for a bag of doritos from the machine (to eat in Biology) and cigarettes.

They called them Whirly Birds:

A dry piece of Taylor Ham (aka Pork Roll) with a piece of yellow American paste (aka cheese) on a stale roll.

It came with a disclaimer: To Induce Vomiting, Eat This. :flush:

I'd ask my mom for half a peanut butter sandwich and a diet pop. I was trying to watch my weight you know... Then I would procede to ask my dad for some change so I could purchase a slushy and a nutty buddy. Self defeating...yes!
