This is how I make the distinction betweet duet and duo. To me a duo is a couple of people that perform together consistently. Whether it's an echo format, two part harmony, or the occasional "duet" as I described earlier.

So, Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes singing "I had the Time of My Life" would be a duet. While "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" is a song that is sung by the duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield (The Righteous Brothers).

Jennifer Warnes gets around as she also sings as part of the duet "Love lift us up where we belong" with Joe Cocker.
